Ok, so I cheked out SS (Bored outta my mind), and was wonder about some of the comments.  I was looking and wonderwing why all the sloppy drooling, love your singing comments, when a person wants a critique of their singing?

I dunno, I suck at singing, but if I asked for a crtique of my singing I would expect the truth. Not some happy comment like GREAT JOB, when the song has been murdered.

Tell me how it is Simon!

Comments?
Rude remarks?

LOL

I think I've said it before... personally, it's super hard to tell someone you don't know (or even someone you do know) that they suck. And the majority of the people on this sit don't suck, but yes, they could use improvement. But some people, even though they put that they want critiquing, don't seem to take it very well, so I just don't critique them. Personally, I agree, I'd much rather have someone tell me "Hey, you were flat so pick that note up a little" or "More vibrato would have been the needed touch," etc. Maybe everyone here is just too nice!!

I see nothiiiing.............NOTHIIIIIIING!! :newlol:

Or, you could be like me and critique when someone doesn't ask for one.  :allears:

I don't like to critique, so what does one do when they've heard a performance that doesn't deserve a PHENOMENAL PERFORMANCE!! comment, but you were asked to tell what you think? There is no way to listen and then not comment...it's not possible.
And what would the singer think if you were a regular listener of their subs, and then all of sudden you stopped listening and commenting? This is not a factor with me though....I just don't have time to listen to everyone, but I would like to be considered a friend still.

But I do think even if the singer doesn't ask to be formally critiqued in their preferences in SS, a friend should be able to comment tactfully on another friend's sub. It does nobody any good to continue to flatter his or her friend because of the friendship.
Maybe if others would follow this guideline, everyone could still be happy at SS while thriving to be a better singer.
I don't ask for critique, but it wouldn't bother me if someone said...I liked your performance, but I think you were a bit flat here and there, because I would know they were telling me the truth....I know what I sound like!

WE'RE NOT PERFECT PEOPLE!!

Well, some are, and they deserve to be flattered. :newlol:

There's always somebody better than you are, and fortunately, you can always find someone worse. What sounds good to one person, may sound like sh*# to another, and what rank have we attained, that enables us to judge. I think most people on SS are looking for acceptance(am I worth listening to, may I sing more), and encouragement. I have yet to hear someone sing a song, that isn't worth listening to, and just having the cajones to put yourself out there, is worth a 10 to me......I'll do anything it takes to get someone to keep singing..........the fluffer

That's also true Johnny Moore. Alot of us throw ourselves out here in the forums and act a fool for the world to see, but the difference is, there's always someone to throw a wrench in our spokes and tell us when we're being foolish.

Nobody ever changes themselves without some kind of opposing opinion or positive encouragement. I do agree with positive encouragement in SS. I think making a positive comment with a friendly gesture is helping someone and would hope that others would do the same for me.
Karaoke doesn't have to sound like the same voice as the original artist, I found this out from a karaoke dj when I asked....I don't really sound like Meatloaf do I? :newlol:
She replied...not exactly, but you perform this song so well! (Paradise by the dashboard lights) She was my duet on this one too. :newlol:
I will still consider doing this song occasionally, but for myself, I like the mimicking stuff better.

This is the same with anything I guess....some people are not literary geniuses here, but I don't think there is anyone here mean enough to come right out and dis someone for it, that's juvenile.

Fact is, there are those of us who love SS, and the people, and just want things to continue in a friendly manner.

If a singer puts themselves "out there" with their song and is actively seeking "feedback, advice, or critique" I  think it's patronizing to fluff them with kudos and flattery if there is some constructive advice that would better suit the situation.  (I've read such obscene flattery of a non-deserving performance that I felt personally insulted--and I wasn't even the singer!)

That being said, the truth of the matter is this: Karaoke as an art form practically demands imperfection to give it it's charm.  Because you can sing, and not be so great, yet still be loved and accepted is a main reason for it's popularity.  The added crux of the matter on SS is that the people leaving the comments are also subbing their own songs for comments...it's a set-up for mutual flattery.  It takes a brave (and confident) soul to pan a singer's performance, then submit their own song next and be a possible target for retaliatory panning.

The most obnoxious example of this that I've seen is when a singer subbed a song that was technically sub-par (pops, feedback, and horrible music/vocal mix) got a comment that the singer could improve her subs if she ironed out the technical problems.  Well, the next guy came along and said, "Sounded swell on my end, beautiful job,  Great sub."     This guy posts essentially the same comment on every song!  Now, how is that helpful to anyone?!  It's not and I think it's actually hostile.

Well, it probably is just a big love fest.  But who'll love us if we don't love each other?

I think you just nailed it, for the most of us who sing and sub anyhow.

Yes, yes, there are people who click "critique" and expect nothing but praise, and cringe from real honest feedback..... but it sure knocks us who really DO just want what you described.

This is why the "critique & rank" options just need to go. Then we can sub for fun or not at all.  :D
