It's interesting.  When a nothern person, and a southern person are having a conversation in which they both tend to talk fast... Every-so-often, there's a lull

I've even been told that I don't sound, like I Type...

You'd perhaps have an easier time speaking, depending of course how strong the drawal is in his area of Louisiana.  Keith spent time in Germany...


Depending on area's of Mississippi, Oklahoma, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky....Not all have as strong an accent to us up here....  I've spoken to many in the Gulf states that don't appear to have much of an accent at all, in fact some sound exactly as we do with no discernible geographic difference in dialect of accent. Other's in certain locations have a very strong drawal that we New Englanders detect, and vice versa... Of course so do the folks that live in Bangor Maine, Philly, and Long Island and the Borroughs of NY. It seems that few out West seem to have a noticeable accent however... midwest yep,  but in the west, I've noticed none,  Unless of course they are native american and live in a reservation area. In some cases their dialect is different as in area's of the Dakota's, Arizona, and New Mexico reservations.

Just my own observation

It wasn't really until I moved up to the north central part of CT... that I started speaking with more of the Bostonian JFK vowel anunciation.. When I was younger living in Fairfield cty... It wasn't really there..

Hopefully it's not the same "high" dialect then!  :shock:  Yes, even there is a distinct sound to the dialect of those in Chicago.  New Yorker's have that bolder than life quality.

Chicago isn't as noticeable to me....  Philly and Baltimore area is EXTREMELY distinct


I have an easier time listening to the people next door at the chinese restaurant than my family that lives in Philly...

Do West coast people have a dialect of sorts to east coast listeners?

Washington State,  Oregon in certain rural areas I've noticed the people appear to speak more slowly, and are quite understandible.  I notice NO discernible accent, the only feeling I get when I speak with most that AREN'T in one of the larger cities, are they are mellower sounding in general than I am....

California of course depending on where I'm speaking, when I was in sales, and marketing, the location made a big difference... Alot of oriental people and hispanic people in certain locations around San Diego... Yet some people had no discernible accent... If it wasn't slightly hispanic, I noticed none... I also noticed no accent in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Montana... Just more laid back much of the time.... Mellower sounding,  not has hyper I suppose... Yet in the cities in these states, I'd not know whether I was speaking to a person in Anchorage Alaska, or Sacramento California, or Boise Idaho, NOTHING discernible ACCEPT for the South Carolina area,  Savanah Georgia,  Gulf coastal cities, areas of Texas (down around central america) alot of hispanic sounding accents......as in New MExica south border and california..... As well as areas of Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky, OKlahoma.... No discernible accent in Nebraska,  yet in area's of the appalachian's such as muskogee, and areas of western virginia and N Carolina a strong accent.....

That about sums it up....  Some of the NY areas,  Brooklyn, LI city area, Boston, and Bangor maine area.... Also Pennsylvania dutch area,  many have a german sounding accent...depends, same with some of the older mennonite areas. in N carolina

I'm sure to most folks that speak with me,  they are reminded of a used car salesman

The slower more punctuated speach pattern I've noticed is more in the S Dakota Oglala reservation areas,  New Mexico native american tribal areas, etc...

Interesting, is it because by the time you get to the West coast, the influence of European languages/dialects  mixed with whatever is diluted a lot?

Kappy, this might be a strange question. Since you have traveled to various locations, I was wondering if you have noticed a difference in facial features among those in varying states? Almost as if you can guess their origin based on qualities of their appearance. Just a random thought.

I haven't traveled at all in the US..  Just when I was on the road, the East coast, yet never west.... Eastern Canada, and Europe.  My experience regarding "Talking" to people is telephone talking, as in marketing, and business... Not traveling...Although traveling I can tell you firsthand about the east coast...That's about it

Being a bit of a linguist myself, and having lived in various places and traveled extensively...I hear accents from every region.  Chicago and Wisconsin are distinct to me...Canadaians, Michiganders, Minnesotans, Dakotans...and even a little further West have a distinctive sound...the South (SWOON)...a Southern Belle will knock me over with a feather...

California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Nevada (unless we're talking ethnically) are relatively accent-free, as is most of the Midwest...

Louisiana is ALL its own...but the BEST accent I love to listen to (other than Aussie or Kiwi--YOWZA!!) is right here in the Heart of Texas!!  It's hard to explain the difference, but it IS there.

You don't notice Georgia, South Carolina, areas of Mississippi Dave ?  Depending on where in Texas, there's a vast array of different dialects.... Northern texas is more midwestern sounding,  the southern area is hispanic sounding.... and the rest I think depends on how far from one of the larger cities you go....

Area's of  Wisconson I think have a decent european population, alot of Norwegions I think in parts if wisconson.. Illinios, and Indiana are ALOT more noticeable to me than Ohio, and depending on location in West virginia it varies vastly... From no noticeable accent to the appalachian sounding "Muskogee" accent which is VERY noticeable to us..Michigan not so much.. to many southern new englanders....Yet the Midwest really is a melting pot of accents....

I do notice SUBTLE differences in different areas of the South...and there's a difference between an urban Southern accent and a rural one.

I've actually noticed more difference east-to-west in Texas than north-south.  I think there are more transplants, honestly, in East Texas...but an accent in this area is actually kind of rare...and more pronounced the more rural you get.  

Northern Illinois is COMPLETELY different to me than southern...there is a Chicagoan accent...that actually carries into Wisconsin...and it IS different from the "Fargo" dialect of Minnesota and the Dakotas.

I grew up in Indiana...there are some with accents there, but by and large, I considered the area as accent-free as the West Coast...same with Ohio.  Again, if it's a rural setting, there's more likely to be an accent.

Of course, when you start throwing in the ethnic diversity that has exploded in all areas, these observations go right out the window...

I have lived all over Illinois. Now I reside in a suburb of Chicago.
If you live near Chicago you hear a melting pot of accents. Inner city
is definitely a Chicago accent. Where I grew up it was a redneck accent.
The farther south you go in Illinois the more country accent you hear.

And "accents in the west".....?? NOT the native borns, nope, nothing at all.

It's funny..... we have a huge blend of Russian, Spanish, and even Iranian here.... it's such a great farming community that it brings alot of other nationalities here. But the "born & bred in the Northwest" people...... no accents at all.

Heck, I don't have one at all, I lost what I had years ago after my family moved here from Texas.... but alot of people still think they hear something in my speach, phrasing or something.... I've been asked plenty of times if I'm from the south.... and I really HAVE NO accent at all. So THAT is how zero of an accent these westerners have... enough so that they hear one from my past.
