I agree, is there really a more rediculous law than some of our law's regarding marijuana ? or behind the counter medications ? 2 MG of a substance being a shelf purchase, 4 MG being prescription only ? It's absurd, personally I can't stand pot, yet that's neither here nor there, I just state that to indicate I'm not saying "Legalize the stuff and tax it" because I personally like it.
Our nation is still @$$ backwards when it comes to alot of it's laws. Allow the individuals the right to live or die as they please, and they MUST be held entirely accountable for their actions as well... and THIS must be taught in the school systems... CHildren accordingly MUST learn how to grow up in a nation without excessive government telling them what they can, and can not ingest... THey are free to live there lives as responsible adults, and must assume full responsibility for their own actions. One thing a responsible adult does is THINK first, act later... and not say "So I F'ed up, it's not my fault that I was born"..

Thank you, That's interesting. Yes, we do hear greatly exaggerated tales that DO in fact make Amsterdam friday night sound alot like "Plato's retreat" in NYC in the 1970's.

People sit there in a “coffeeshop”, socializing, and just smoking some pot, without risking the life of someone else. It’s not a big sex orgy where everything is a free for all Steven. Until 1995 coffeeshops were illegal but tolerated. The Dutch first allowed coffeeshops to create a separation between soft and hard drugs. Unfortunately it did not work perfectly. First allowed in the early 70's, but the 1990's coffeeshops had degenerated into a front business for cocaine dealers and other nasty types. So in 1995, more than 200 of 550 coffeeshops in Amsterdam were busted and closed. Because they were never legitimized businesses, they were seen as criminal operations and the closure was implemented. Left behind were the 300-350 coffeeshops that the Dutch determined were still tolerable. A licensing board was setup and these remaining businesses were licensed and legitimized. Then the number of licences was frozen. You can not get a new license to open a new coffeeshop. The owners of exisiting coffeeshops must love this, bless their little capitalist hearts. The only way to get a coffeeshop now is to buy an existing one. You cannot just buy the license; you must buy the whole business. Also you cannot move the business to a new location.
You answered my question with this post...Hmmm... Very informative....It explains alot...

But that appears to be the only drug that they sell....It also states that it is NOT illegal to use drugs because they want peole who are addicted to be able to seek treatment without fear of prosecution.... Here is the link....

Shyguy, was it once like that over there?? Do you think this is something relatively new?
I wouldn't read to much in what the fancy documents say. Go there and see what is tolerated Isis. Also, let's look at some of the "laws" that are actually on the books (here in the US of A) and if they are really applied:
There is in fact an Illinois law that prohibits a number of things, one of which is a public erection, and another one of which is nude dancing. The prohibition against the public erection has never been challenged in the Supreme Court, but the prohibition against nude dancing has.
If you want to read more, you can view the case for the second instance above. The URL is: http://caselaw.findlaw.com/scripts/getc ... 1&page=560
While it is legal for theaters to show movies on a Sunday, it is only legal so long as (1) they have a permit from either the city or the county and (2) at least once monthly they show a religious or educational film
It is illegal for a man to give his sweetheart a box of candy weighing less than fifty pounds in Idaho
So how much value can you put to some laws?

I just read the "Bad things happen in bars" thread for the first time today. I see a few of my questions about Holland were addressed there.

There is no law against public nudity in the district I live in. What a person will be challenged on is competency, and intent in court.. Sad Sad thing, but they go about things in a backhanded way :( corrupt... IMHO...

Shyguy...Thanks...Gosh I needed a laugh...I do forget about some of the laws on the books here in the states....They do get pretty ridiculous.....
I guess it is all subjective anyway,,,,Give a law to 5 people and yes you will get 5 different interpretations...and 5 different ways to enforce them. And as long as there are laws there will always be people breaking them or trying to figure out how to get around them.....
This has been a very enlightening conversation today...Thank you....
I'm going to crawl back under my looks and go have some fun...I wouldn't want anyone here to think I actually can think <wink, wink>
Have a great day!!!

I can show you a list of law's that have never been amended on the books since the days of the "Blue Laws". They are written, CAN be enforced, yet really don't apply..
Some of these laws are nasty. Sex on Sunday is illegal, Non missionary position sex is illegal in some districts, hitching your alligator to a fire hydrant in Saratoga Springs NY is illegal... and the list goes on.. Makes us sound more inhibited than old Iraq.

Florida
It is illegal for a single, divorced, or widowed woman to parachute on Sunday.
It is against the law to fall asleep under a hair dryer. The people that break the law and the salon owners can be fined for this.
The law states that if an elephant is tied to a parking meter, it must pay the same fees as a car.
It is illegal to sing in a public place while in a bathing suit.
It is illegal for men to be seen in public wearing a strapless gown.
Miami - it is illegal to molest alligators.
Miami - it is illegal to imitate animals.
Key West - it is against the law to hold a turtle race within the city limits.
Tampa Bay - it is against the law for rats to leave docked ships.

Yet there are reasons for these laws. You'll probably find that a LONG time ago a woman might have solicited herself by standing in a bathing suit, or bikini singing. This was a means she used of advertising she was a call girl.
These are the reasons certain laws get taken overboard. THere's always some incident behind them...
