I never knew this.  I knew you could change pitch with the control, but I didn't know they tweaked this note by note to edit the final studio cuts... Sounds as though some of these vocalist's go thru as  much "touch up" editing as the model's on GQ and COSMOPOLITAN go thru airbrushing..I never knew there was a device that compensated for "off-pitch" individual notes while singing. Is there ? Or do they just edit individual notes with a pitch wheel on the recording device prior to releasing it on air or album cut ? While I'm aware technology has all sort's of devices to tweak just about everything with..If there's a device that compensates for off-pitch singing during live performance, I never heard of it..(or recall it)

From what I've seen Steve, you're right. 'Bad Spots' are 'tweaked' in the mixing studio, after everything has been recorded. Some vocalists have a hard time doing a 'perfect' performance, so it's either do that or have them record it over & over & over. Others are blessed enough to be able to actually sing it on pitch, live (go figure).

Yeah, I'm playing catch-up, but I promised I would come over here & I didn't want to keep you all waiting (what with the baited breath & all.. ew... lol). heheheh ;)

I've seen devices that can compensate if the singer is CONSISTANTLY off... (like the vocal processor that can raise (or lower) your vocals by however much). And that is 'real time', just like a guitar processor you play through. I haven't seen or heard of anything that can help the person (real time) who only goes off once in a while... but if there is such a thing I would be curious to hear about it.

Hey... I could go pro!!! ;) heheheheh

check it out at TC Helicon the product is voiceworks. I have one, and it can do wonders. I can set it up for a certian key, gook a guitar to it and bend the string, it will never change the pitch. Kinda an amazing tool. and all this for less than $600.00

I have never used it for a sub here, I feel it isn't fair. But I have used it at Karaoke, and suprised a few customers when their song actually sounded good.

I'm gonna have to check it out!! I'm polishing the star for my door already!!!  LMAO

Lemme try to 'splain that. Charmin had someone REALLY tick me off a few weeks ago. Had me cryin' in my beer, blah-blah-blah.... and like any good little brat I did the "Okay, NOW YOU'VE TICKED ME OFF....... and I'M LEAVIN' THE FORUMS!!"

Of course, I had to dramatize it by deleting all my pictures, songs, and every post of mine I could reasonably find within a couple days.

Then..... it wore off. Temper tantrum was over. So I politely sent a second PM to Phil (with my head hung low, haha) and asked him to please not delete my username after all.

So, yeah, there are QUITE a few "Had to edit..." posts all over by me. It was a stubborn little attitude thing.

Oh, and hahaha....... NO........ it was absolutely NOTHING to do with a song that was subbed. It was all on a personal level only.

Lonman :) I just listened to your sub. I'm not as capable of giving a precise critique as some of the other folks here, but here's what I heard.

First, you seem to be strongest on the higher parts. You have a slight edge to your voice which is reminiscent of Ozzy. Your pitch seems good in most of the performance. On the decending line ("Just like witches at black masses") you are mostly accurate, but didn't quite hit the last word, 'masses' - you start on the correct note, then wobble a bit to the sharp side. The second and third passes on that particular pattern are done correctly, then in the fourth pass 'mankind' (going up), I'm going to display my ignorance here, I would appreciate if someone could give me a better, more descriptive word to use... but I believe the problem with 'mankind' is that it's normally a two syllable word, but it's broken into four syllables over a difficult "run" << (that's the word I'm talking about). Then it happens again in 'mind' (brain-washed mind).

In my experience, when you have a difficult 'run' like that, the best thing to do is break it down into the individual notes & sing them slowly, over & over until you get it right when you sing it at the correct speed. It's unfortunate that just having one note off in the 'run' throws the feeling of the song (at least that part of it) off. Not sure if that technique will help you at all, but thought I would offer it up. :)

Now, when you pass into 'Oh Lord Yeah!!' that really rocks (to be simplistic). Your vocals are strong and controlled. In fact, after that point, your voice works well on the song. I also like your use of dynamics and strong energy throughout. Your vibratto is smooth and pleasant.

When you repeat the same (riff??) in the end that you sang in the beginning, it sounded more full and warm... possibly because your voice had 'warmed up' by then.

As an overview, the only problem spots I really heard were a few pitch errors (already mentioned), and with those ironed out, I thought this song worked well for you. Hope this is beneficial (although no doubt it pales beside the other critiques).

Perhaps you can take solace that it CAME ACROSS as being really funny. ;) You kept posting 'had to edit' posts after posts where it just seemed appropriate, as if you wanted to say something about the topic, but were keeping your mouth shut. Anyway, it struck me as funny. Sorry you had a bad encounter... you're a tough gal, I can't imagine what could have hit you that hard! Anyway, glad to see that you didn't leave after all. ;)

The very concept of Karaoke is like writing a book and paying to have it published, or cutting 500 self-bought CDs that never sell. The average person submitting a song is not looking for Simon Cowell or Randy Jackson critiques but rather...look I recorded a song for you to hear. if you enjoyed it say so otherwise say nothing. I'll get the picture by the number of comments to views ratio. Am I wrong in my analogy???

Many feel this way yes. Those that do feel as such also have one of two options for categories in Singer's Showcase to submit their material in accordingly.. Under either "L"= Listen or "J"= Just for fun with comments.

Some also do not feel this way. They want to be Critiqued. Assuming they do not, having such a category in Singer's Showcase would be misleading, and a catalyst for trouble, correct ?  After-all, The term "Critique" has a definition, as does rank.
There is a category for those that have a different "need" and state this by submitting in "Critique with Rank".  This is the current breakdown in Singer's Showcase. People have these options.

1) Listen only
2) Just for fun- with comments (which is essentially the "average" you speak of)
3) Critique-Rank-comments

The problem here is that the onus falls upon the listener who has had to be clairovoyant, or statistically VERY lucky in order to determine whether the individual singing in Singer's Showcase actually understands that they have submitted work in the third Critique category. There ARE in fact people that do want other's advice and rented ears as to how they can improve as singers, although they likely do fall outside the "average karaoke singer" category.  Not all wish to go to a vocal conservatory to get suggestions and tips.

If it becomes fallacy to believe those submitting for Critique and Rank, want anything more than to be lied to. Critique should be removed IMHO. I can understand how young children in the second grade might get confused, and have a difficult time assuming responsibility for their actions.  Yet when an adult submits their material to be Critiqued, those believing the adult is mature enough to state their honest needs, shouldn't end up frequently yelling "Ouch" following getting pelted with rocks for stating the honest and usually VERY mild suggestion or two...

There are believe it or not, people that are fed up with being lied to when they ask for criticism, have stated this, and they DO in fact want to know "What did I do that could be improved upon in your honest opinions" ?

The hopes of some of us here, are to cater to the honest mature segment that has stated their needs, and ends up losing out under the current system in Singers Showcase.  Where honesty is seldom an option within the Critique with Rank category !

I agree Steven that some do want straight forward give me the truth critiques. The best place I know where you can get this is garageband.com They will tell it like they see it and most are accomplished singers and musicians.
Bo Bice had a page there and uploaded many songs before he went on American Idol.

I'll head over to the garageband site right now. I've read a few posts there in the past, yet never actually combed thru that particular site in any detail.  Thanks much for the tip.

How would a vocalist without a band integrate into such a site ?   Is there an area there that welcomes, or even accepts the Singer without a band ? The singer that is using Karaoke backing ?

Is it not Garageband the software for a one man band?

NO, Sebykins ... I honestly couldn't tell ya who it was ... nor at this point do I care... but anything you may have written to me (did you even critique that song????) probably wasn't too far from what I was thinking myself.  No.... as I recall, this person told me not to give up my day job ... my voice sounded "scratchy" and that I had no pitch control (which I KNOW is a lie).  NO... it wasn't you ... and it really doesn't matter WHO it was .... all I was simply trying to say was that while I think its a great thing to give those that ask for critique some suggestions for improvement ... (rather than pointing out flaws) ... I feel it should be done in PM or in a thread such as this (hence, its creation).

I still think there is a "style" of critique that can work... offering folks an "educated" (and I use that word cautiously) opinion on ways to improve certain elements of a song ... without ever having to be "critical" .... or use terms that "offend" or possibly "hurt" some.  But.... I simply don't have a whole ton of time to participate in that way, given the chaos of this thing they tell me is my life.  I do have some vacation time in a week or so ... so I may be around here a bit more and if so, I'll try to chime in and give some good feedback.

Till then.... LOVE YA everybody!!   :D

Interesting CCindy.  I know there are a few that wish for their feeback to be entirely open for all to view, or publically displayed.  While I realize that this is generous to others in-so-far as it enables other's to pickup possible tips as well (at times), I'm curious as to the reason some prefer that the Critique portion of their performance be displayed publically as opposed to privately, with the option of the performer first viewing it, and than deciding to post it in full view themselves should they wish to share it with others ?   The only reason I personally would wish for my critique to be in public view, would be as a psychological lesson for myself, and that would be the humbling aspect... Learning to deal with others feelings in the open, and accept them, how to accept open honestly,  I'm sure those in the service learn this ALL the time in basic... either that of course, or the individual already has learned to transcend such aspects of possible ego-bruise, and is truly tougher than many in this area, or more disciplined.... I can see this as a valuable tool in the case of many who wish to learn to cope with,  or perhaps develop the ability to transcend aspects of ego, and learn humility, and how to be humble..... (heck, maybe I should sub after-all   )

I suppose (as I've mentioned) since the listener's here are pretty much a microcosm of the real listening world.. In fact here, it's even more brash in many ways than an audience because there isn't the public contagion of clapping, laughter, booing, etc....  People are listening in the comfort of their own living-rooms, and often the most judgemental in such an enrvironment....  A person who can deal with constructive criticism in real... Is a person who can get alot out've such a venue... Myself, I like to be in places where I learn, and can grow... This is actually quite a way to develop aspects of ones character.....

Yet as Billy mentioned during a conversation not too long ago, this is ALSO the reason a person must really think before submitting their work in a Critique category...As Billy correctly mentioned, it often goes something like this...

Performer:       I want you to Critique my work, I can take it, go ahead...

Critiquer:         ARE YOU SURE you want me to critique you in public ? or even at all.

Performer:       Sure, Why not ?

Critiquer:         You might end up annoyed that what I said, was said in public
                        or even said at all

Performer:        Hmmm,  well you wouldn't be critical would you be ?

Critiquer:          Go get a dictionary, and look up the term "Critique"

Performer:        No. Go ahead

Critique:        ::::Offers somewhat of a critical analysis of singers performance::::

Performer:         POUT.... I don't like you anymore, because of YOU, I'm never
going to sing again  <Stomp>   <Stomp>   <Stomp> :bawling:
and by the way.... Who the hell do you think you are ? SHEEESH

Honestly, the folks who have specifically asked ME to be honest with them, have never gotten angry at my critiques.

But when people just put something in their song comments like 'critiques and suggestions welcome!' or something similar inviting critiques, they don't necessary appreciate my comments, though most folks either thank me for my efforts, or are just too polite to get upset.  LMAO

:dontknow: ah well... I just keep stumbling along. Usually I don't really get roasted unless I refuse to give a 10 to someone everyone else has pretty much given 10s to (and sometimes not even then). I'm not sure if it's a character flaw or a positive attribute that 'going with the flow' is pretty meaningless to me. I certainly don't consider myself to be a trend-setter, but a follower?? uh-uh... no way.

(aries don't make good sheep)   huh??? lol

So this doesn't end up in the archives.  I'm resurrecting it.  It was for a time a mature Critique thread,  started heading in a direction for those that could deal with Critique, and exchange thoughts.
