Boy, that's a real tough one but after some careful thought, I'd rather lose my voice before my sight or mobility. I have some skills playing the keyboards and I can read some music fairly well. I could fall back and become a session musician or a lounge player somewhere in Manhattan or lower Westcherster County (New York City suburb).

In my particular case even though music has been most of my life. I think the world would be a much more lonely, and isolated place without my vision than the auditory senses...In fact I'd become paranoid without my vision. Might never feel I'm alone when I need privacy... etc..

It's always been a horrifying thought for me,  imagining having sex, while there's another person in the room that can see me

I couldn't see my previous post so here it goes one more time:

After some careful thought, I'd rather lose my voice before losing my sight or mobility. I play some keyboards, so I could fall back on becoming a studio musician or a lounge player somewhere in Manhattan or lower Westchester County(NYC suburb). I can read failry well so I think I would need my eyes for that LOL

There were times when I go without speaking talking or vocalizing in any form for 3wks. No problem so I can go without the voc.

You actually go 3 weeks without any vocalizing Jian ?  or because you might be alone, you are unaware of sounds you might make ?

Not taking in account sneezing, coughing, snoring, and a few other involuntary sound made by the vocal cord. Yes, When I go to work I do not talk for weeks. very normal in my line of work.

OK, that makes sense Jian.  Because most of the day I am alone (except for when the phone rings)... I assume I say nothing,  but just a few seconds ago I "sighed", or made sounds as I exhaled....Yet that makes sense....We can do fine without vocalizing,  My life would not be terribly affected believe it or not assuming I lost my vocal cords...NONE of the other senses would I endure without likely becoming seriously mentally ill... Those would be EXTREMELY stressful to individuals of a social species !  To feel dependent and helpless or a non-productive part of a Western Culture is a VERY depressing thing... In the United States noone wants to feel as though they are a "nipple upon their society"....At least noone with any dignity !

Steve : growing up in the 60's my Grandmothers House in Oyster bay Long Island actually still had the original Ice box although it was just being used as a pantry storage.
they still had the old Coal bin in the basement I remember even shoveling coal in the furnace before they upgraded. the sound of hissing radiators

The bathrooms even had the toilet tank way up high with a pull chain.:)

sorry to go off track on the thread.

just some old sounds, sights and feelings I would not have seen heard or felt without my senses.
Hmm I think I'll go sing about them now.

for me I'd rather lose my voice than anything else.

Just my 3 cents

By the way   Ray Charles Lost his Sight at age 7   he knew what he was missing

The presence of sound is more intense when the listener is not part of the source. If the listener is abstinent from being part of the source for a long period of time idea and thought become Cristal clear and translate to mental sound. Does that make sense.

yes Adrian,  it makes sense because among individuals in a species,  Sound (communication) is geared towards interrelations... Instinctively, or innately, it makes sense that as reflex for protection, or even individual needs among a species, we would be MUCH more aware of externally generated sound...

Michael,  How big a name is Billy Joel in Oyster Bay ?

(Here's a challenge for you...LOL.   Ballad of Billy the Kid)

Intense lyrics Michael..  What a song about loneliness

Michael,  I'm abit confused,  Is Glen Cove the city, and Oyster Bay one of the three districted towns within the city ?    Besides the Hempsteads ?

I remember my grandma's house having push button light switches.

I talk all day at work, sometimes lose my voice. Than I do karaoke at night.
When I get home I like it quiet and peaceful. No music- little talking- and sleep!

Wow they still sell those old things? I remember when microwaves came out.
We thought they were kind of stupid because all they did was heat things up, not really cook anything well. Now i don't know what I'd do without one.

Michael,  I'm going to start a somewhat humorous thread,  since I don't want to threadjack Bab's thread with some of this stuff....

I know Bab's,  you are very good natured,  yet still what I have a tendency to do without really being aware of it is rude, and not a good habit to get back into.. Depending on where the topic strays, or how many generations from the OP.... MANY can understandably find such behaviour offensive..

I realize I wasn't part of this discussion, but I have YET to find a Billy Joel song I can't do, and do well...

The man is nothing short of a musical genius as far as I'm concerned. My favorite of his so far hasn't yet been made into Karaoke. "No Man's Land". Talk about some powerful lyrics!!

Ballad of Billy the Kid is excellent, too!
