The sub woofer thread brings to mind a simple question I have started in other forums and never did get a direct simple answer.. I run a eon10 g2 most of the time for a stage monitor..  The aux send 1 is pre fade which requires an adjustment if the over all main volume is varied.  When running FOH  (up to 50-100 feet from the stage) the sub can be heard and adjusted but the stage monitor cant be heard or adjusted off stage.

 It is no problem with experienced singers or in a band but in our situation there are many variables in singers preferences and stage experience.. Tricks anyone? I would simply come out of one of the mains but fx in the stage monitor doesnt work...

Typically the stage monitor shouldn't have much (if any - bigger feedback risk for effects in the monitors) effects.  Some people like more vocal, some like more music, some like a 50/50 blend, some want it LOUD, then you get some that want it off altogether - which is where separation from the mains come into play.  Aux 1 (typically the monitor send on most mixers) allows for this so the singer can have their individual mix & it doesn't affect the mains.  When it's tapped off the mains, you can't make any individual adjustments without affecting the mains so if they just want to be swimming in verb, you can put it in their monitor without making you look like you don't know what you're doing as the main mixer.

Run your sub from the main & your monitor from the Aux.

You need post fader aux feed to the sub AND the monitors, huh?...And you want FX in the monitors at the same time....Ouch!

Does it help if I tell you that most pros don't send vocal FX to the monitors?..I know, I know your singers WANT FX in the monitors.

This isn't the professional way to do it, but I used to run my monitors through the aux and didn't like it. I now run it through the headphone out. The reason I do this is that I get the full mix through the monitors and can adjust the relative volume of the music and singer. I can't hear the mains at all the way I am forced to set up, so this is my only real way of monitoring the mix myself in real time.  Of course, the headphone out has its own volume control so I don't have to worry about the monitor being adjustable and can turn the volume down (I run it at about 75% of the volume of the mains). What is important to me and the singers is that what they hear from the monitor is exactly what is coming from the mains...

Ok let me rephrase the question.  I dont just run full blast volume and leave it at that.  At times I adjust the main volume according to genre and always as the crowd thickens or lessens. With the prefade send the stage monitor needs readjusting........Which is hard to do unless you are on the stage in direct proximity to the monitor.....I am very particular about a close level match between the monitor and mains.  So how do you ride the level on the stage monitor?

I go listen to them.  If they need adjusting, I do it.  Again, what do you do if a singer wants less or more vocal or music?  If you run them the same as the mains (or tapped off), you can't adjust for that without messing with the mains.  I have some people that want nothing but music LOUD MUSIC in their monitor, I can give them that without affecting the main volume - sure you may hear the monitor a little more, but not to the point of overpowering the mains.

I understood the first time...(quite a feat for me!)

Seeing as how you are snaked out to FOH, I don't see any way for you to monitor and control stage levels unless your monitor sends are post fader.....Even then, all you can do is establish a baseline percentage of stage vs mains and hope it remains balanced up n down as you attenuate/increase the masters.

You also gotta remember to properly match amp input sensitivity between the monitor amp and the mains amp....when you tweek the master sliders, your different amps will respond differently output wise if one is set more sensitive than the other....So you could have a perfect stage/mains blend at normal performance levels, then a huge difference at lower levels. Now you know why big bands that snake out also have a guy on stage with his own board just for monitors.

As a solution-because your mixer lacks post fader aux outs with FX, I suggested that you forego FX in the monitors.

 I do the same Lon The regulars that I know their prefs I will adjust the trim pots on the strips (like more or less mic) and try to remember to put them back...Its just one of those things I'm trying to find an easier way or less time consuming way to do it... After while you can tell if a stranger or regular is struggling or moving around trying to hear whats going on I will approach them and see what the deal is...Or listen to the monitor and adjust....

When I was running a show that actually had a band sized stage, I ran 2 monitors, 1 for music & 1 for vocals, they COULD actually walk around on stage to get a pefect mix of what they wanted more.
