Colorado passed the state wide smoking ban but they had some common sense. The exemptions casinos, private clubs like the vfw and small mom and pop bars or businesses with 3 or less employess..... Most of the private clubs had petitions circulating.  Although I dont smoke anymore I think it is more of a fair deal than originally proposed.. Now I think the cities should modify theirs accordingly.

I sooooo much look forward to the day smoking (*cough - cough*) :2cents:  is banned in local bars in Calgary.  Many other Canadian cities have bylaws and smoking bans.  It make the whole singing experience that much better.

Now if someone tried to propose a beer ban - then there'd be trouble pilgrimme :grumble:

Cheers... :beermates:

only trouble is, Terry, that smokers constitute 85% of my customers... once it happens here in Portland, we're in big trouble! It already happened in Vancouver, WA, and it killed off the smaller bars! That's more competition for an already saturated market!

But, Matt, THINK about it........

I'm sure it only killed the smaller bars in Vancouver because it's so easy for those people to cross the line into PDX to be in a smoking establishment. If neither PDX or Vancouver allows it any more...... people are NOT gonna go driving all the way to Idaho or Cali to smoke in a bar. They may throw a fit at first..... guess I maybe would too if I smoked.... but they will still want to go to bars.

Keith, being a non-smoker does not necessarily make you a "do gooder". I will be the FIRST to sign a petition to ban smoking here....... cause I physically can't tolerate to be around it. But...... I'm no where near a "do gooder".

Though, it would be cool if I had a choice of "smoking karaoke room" or "non smoking karaoke room"......... I'm betting MANY of the smokers would go in the "non smoking" room when they're up to sing...... to be in a cleaner atmosphere while singing. Okay, uh, let's see....... we'll wait until the law passes here........ then I'll bet ya, let's say........ a new set of speakers?  (just something off the top of my head)  :dancin:

And I still believe in supply and demand.  If people demand non-smoking bars then a very savvy business person would open a non-smoking bar on their own and rake in a fortune, but this doesn't seem to happen.  Why not?  Because there doesn't seem to be a demand or else it would have happened.  Two bars here tried it and went smoking within 6 months because of low attendance.

Yea theres a guy that smokes cigars in the v if I am 2 or 3 barstools down I get a spitting headache.  But I think there should be smoking and nonsmoking bars so either could make their own choice.. They clamped down on checking kids ids here for buying cigarettes.  After that the breaking into cars and theft went way up.. For stereos? no cigs....If they think prohibition (which was the catalyst for organized crime) was something wait till they get done with this project which will include our health system...

Matt get a bunch of petitions circulating. The bars in greeley are almost gone.. They were hanging on to see what the state would do Now I think the cities should relax or modify their ordinances.. Because the level playing field is not going to be..

Well, yah, that's what would be the best....... "a choice".

I mean, they should have the right to smoke, and inhale other peoples' smoke if they wanna....... but I in turn should have the right to go out and NOT have to breath their second hand.

The way it stands now, my choice is go out & breathe it - or stay home & not go out at all. (and I'm getting REALLY tired of staying home on the weekends.......)

That's all I'm saying.

Given a choice though of "smoke everywhere" or "smoke NOwhere"....... I'll cross my fingers it gets banned. Why would I not? I don't smoke.

just to toss my two cents in......
the bar owners here in austin decided that it was cheaper to pay the fines than lose the business of smokers.   so the city upped the fines.  so the bar owners charged more for beers, drinks, and cover and kept right on allowing smoking.  the city finally gave up and revised the smoking ordinance.  not sure what the rules are now since i'm niether a smoker nor a bar owner, but the two sides seem to have struck a happy medium.  i completely disagree with city, state or federal sanctions on how a business owner must conduct business or for how a land owner may use his/her land for that matter, but government involvement is here to stay so i just grin and bear it.

Man, I need that "beating a dead horse" thingee that Kappie has.......

Thing I argue about when people say that is:

Government stepping in in THIS situation is a bit different. People who are non-smokers get sick ALL THE TIME from second hand smoke-sometimes they die from it, and when they've NEVER smoked themselves. It's a public health issue...... why should they not step in?

People say "Well, don't go to bars then"..... that's like saying "There's speeders on the road..... well don't go on any roads then, lest you get in an accident".

Nevermind..... I'm off for today. Bye everyone.

driving is a bit different than going to a bar.  you HAVE to drive to get to work, unless you go on mass transit, which is non smoking.  bars are not publicly owned as roads are.  my gripe is not about whether the government should control publicly owned places.  my gripe is with government intervening in private business.  again, i'm not a smoker either.  for me it's not about smokers or non smokers rights.  it's about business owners rights.

I wouldnt Laugh at that too long ....the way everyone is going it might be next.
the USA is turning ito just a bunch of big whiners. crying about just anything...

I heard on the news the other day that an elementry school Has Banned the Game of "Tag" During Recess. due to "someone may be offended By being Tagged and too damn fat to run and Tag another kid. or a kid may not want to play and be Tagged and upset...Man Im Glad I got thru a great Childhood during the 60's.

I ate the lead paint off my Crib Rails, I Drank out of a garden Hose, I shared Bottles of Soda with My Friends, I got Nailed During a great game of Dodge Ball during Gym Class at School.

There was an email going around with some of the thinhgs I mentioned above. it was great.

Back to smoking laws.

IMHO   bars should choose to be either smoking or non smoking and let the customer numbers and money intake be the judge of who goes where.

I dont like Breathing in anyone elses smoke but I sure Do Enjoy My own.  (cough cough)

thats my 3 cents anyway.

I needed to post

I hate cigarette smoke and I hate the STENCH that permeates my clothes and hair when I step outside and can smell it on me. Its nasty and gross. I make no apologies about it. Just do the smell test some night by stepping outside in fresh air and smelling the ash/smoke smell throughout your clothing. One place I went into I wasnt in there for more than 10 mins and the smoke stench on my clothes was OVERPOWERING after we left(this was a bar that one of our more prominent KS KJ's performs at). I have to go to bars to do my job(writer/photographer) and find it to be SOOOOOO REFRESHING and enjoyable when I go to one that has WORKING SMOKE EATERS or NON-SMOKING. If the place stinks from cig smoke I get my interview and pic and am in and out in 20 mins or so. If I can BREATH in the place then I stay, sing, or listen to the band, buy some dinner have a couple drinks and stay most of the evening. Otherwise Im out as quickly as I possibly can be. If I'm not working I wont even go into a smoke filled bar.  My wife wont go out with me to a smoky bar. So most nights Im on my own. The solution I think is smoking, non-smoking sections and smoke-eaters. They DO work. And with markedly reduced smoke stench the bars WOULD see an increase in visitors who otherwise stay away for just that reason. In fact, read my articles and you will find  VERY SPECIFIC comments about them being SMOKE FREE or not SMOKE FREE. The bar owners who are smoke free use it as a BIG SELLING POINT for people to choose thier establishment.

A smoker myself and hate smoke-filled place. There just isn't any choice. There used to be a karaoke/restaurant that was non-smoking in my hood but it closed down(the closer was not related to the smoking issue) We smoker had great time there; need a cig. we go to a smoking room which have glass walls ;you can see whats going on in the main area.

Given the choice I will vote to go to a clean-air place   ...anytime. and if they decided to ban alcohol... I don't drink much and I can do without the beer. There will be less trouble from the drunk and no one will puke into the mic LOL

Just DON'T ban the karakoe and the

GRO LOL

guys, I said this before...

I will be the VERY first to support a non-smoking thing... except that I DID. I ran a venue that was a non-smoking venue... NOBODY showed!!

The non-smokers STILL want to go out with their SMOKING friends!

Washington's ban is that you have to be 25 feet away from an entrance. The latest news on it is that this law has adversely affected senior homes and care facilities! I have no trouble with a smoking ban per se, but make it realistic... And I DO mean serious smoke eaters or have a "smoking section" that can be isolated from the rest of the venue.
