So as not to hijack another thread I will start a new one..

Quote:
Yeah,  planned obsolescence.  Can someone kindly point me to a company that says, "I want my end user to get a great product that last's a lifetime" ?  I'll easily pay between 2-3 times as much assuming this is the actual goal.

Kappy that is why in my inner being I am a blacksmith but most of all a woodworker.. I can build you a log home made out of Eastern red cedar that will last 300 or more years Cedar isnt eaten or carried away by bugs... A hand crafted product has the vibrations and love of the maker.. One of the few songs I sing serious is Moringside by Neil Diamond... A hand crafted product can be repaired by hand  A computer designed product nedds a cuomputer for analysis.. Welcome to the 21st century... One other comment Can you tell me why you can throw a beer can out into a barrow pit alongside the road and 5 years later it is still as bright as when you bought it... Pay $200,000 for an automoble and just sitting in the driveway for 5 years it looks like S88t?

Karyoker,  thanks for starting this thread.  I found two Currier (I think that's the make) radio's downstair,  what chassis too....Metal, and something called "wood".
I suppose what you pay today might, or might NOT mean what you end up with is commensurate with cost, and this is a problem unfortuneately.. Companies ARE there to make money (we know this), and unfortuneately this often means cutting corner's and (for lack of PC thought) screwing the consumer. There's a reason I collected the Hallicrafters, and Hammarlund, as well as older SWR's.  I LIKE solid, and metal..I wish I bought out J&R's batch of Dynaco tubers 8 years ago when they were being blown out for 75% off, yet I didn't know much about Dynaco..THey might, or might not've been one of the more durable amps.. I'm not overly fond of plastic in most cases when it comes to casings, I like aluminum, SS, etc... I don't care about the "weight"..

I've got modified rigs downstairs. What was it again ?  The 2010 conversion to SSB ?  I forgot... Yet some of the older solid stuff I still have after many years, it went thru many moves, extreme climate changes, and this stuff still is a testamonial to it's production quality and times... I'm sure such is the case always with a % of most newer brands too... Yet this is a question, not a statement.... ARE THERE companies we can trust today ?  Sony isn't what they ONCE were... Are there any companies still around that take pride "across the board" in making a solid product ?

I have plenty of stuff downstairs,  some I can even still lift.  You mentioned Ampex, and I recall their tape stuff, even the Apex 300... Yet I also have old Ampeg heads, and have a catalogue here LOADED with schematics for Ediphone, Ward Airline, Supro, Estey, Fender, Sears Silvertone, Gibson, even directions on hooking up the Sencore Variac  LMAO.. It's a basic tech book about Amps... The name of this is "Guitar Amplifier Handbook" by a guy named  "Jack Darr". 1971 edition...Somehow it followed me out've the HighSchool library, don't recall the specific... If you want any schematics I'd be happy to photostat them and fax them or if my scanner works, scan them to you.. This book is loaded... I'd give it to you, but I have a feeling I might want it when I grow up.

Assuming you can use any of the above schematics, I can copy them. (Doesn't cost me much), and even fax them to you.
I'm getting all sentimental now...

Maybe that's why I like Sheetrocking, although that's no 300 years, I think sheetrock on average is good for 50-70 years assuming there's no water damage and mildew probs...

Speaking of long lasting, although useless today,  I was looking at an old Sansui quad 4 channel synth stereo system I have downstairs.... Reverb unit, 4 channel unit, and a few other pieces....I'm going to head over to Ebay to see if it's even worth the shipping fee to someone.. It's in great shape, and collecting dust

This looks pretty practical assuming you can bury the cables somehow... It's a folded horn coffee table.. great way to get bass without needing space :)

Take a look at this soundroom Karyoker...

"Royal Device"

Next year when I get my "second Star" in here, and I get rich, I'm going to have a studio just like the one above !  Isn't that gorgeous ?  Look at the room design, and how he's hollowed out a small basement area for the bass .....  Fascinating concept.. JUst takes a few dollars   LMAO

I forget what class or lab it was Theyseperated us into pairs . Gave us a a 4 by 6 by 2" aluminum chassis.  We had to build a 5 tube super hetrodyne receiver braoadcast 550- 1600 megacycles ( thats wat they used to call them)  We had to drill holes with a drill press and using chassis punches make holes big enough for the tube sockets And drll holes at the proper dimension to screw the tube sockets in Then drill holes to mount the terminal strips to mount all the components. Same for the power transformer and the controls on the front... Using the schematic we mounted and soldered all the components to the term strips and sockets Twisted all the filament wires to all the tubes  so as not to get a 60 cycle hum... Put a strain relief in back and run the power cord to tthe primary of the transformer , one side thru the on-off switch...  We had to put beeswax on a string and run it with the right amount of twists and tension between the dial and tuning capacitor. Then with an old tube type signal generator and meter or scope we had to peak the input rf coils and tune the if coils for max.. Check the power output for 4, 8 and 16 ohms... This radio is long gone .. Do you realize what I would give to have it?///

Edit It was the Navy Electronics "a" school

That's what my hallicrafter's S-38 is.  5 tube Superhet...  There are probs with those as I recall, if one tube goes, you need to be careful .... You can't let one tube go as I recall, or something like that ?.....  Weren't alot of the 1950's rigs superhet ?

ADDED IN:

In fact Karyoker, that was one of the reasons I got my Tube Tester.... An engineer mentioned to me if you check these tubes at all times...Don't allow even one to burn out, or you're screwed.... Something like that.  There's ANOTHER trade name for those 5 tube jobbers.... Forgot what it is...  But they can be trouble..

That aside,  take a look at this McMurdo late 1930's "Silver" Receiver

I read the article 5 times In a true pure sin wav this system would only produce a horrendus feedback but taking into consideration they are dealing with many signals that are out of phase anywhere from 180-360 (I dont have a clue what they are usings as an inout LOL , it might work) It wouldnt be a pink or white noise but something different  Do you realize your sphincter muscle is resonant to 69.5 hertz and a loud amplified signal wiil make you s**t in your pants LOL

Of course,  alot of days that happens when the phone rings.  Not sure exactly what that frequency or amplification would be, but years ago I was standing in front of a New Brunswick Ferry about to head to PE Island... The diesel horn let loose, and it knocked me off've my feet...It was so loud, and low, that I lost control of my autonomic nervous system....Good thing I didn't lose control of something else,,,, could've easily happened.... In the 60's Karyoker some of the older basses and amps... Not sure if you recall the Gibson EBO... With the VERY bottomy humbucker, you can feel it more than hear it.... Thru a powerful 2X15 folder horn cab the thing would knock the wind out've your chest if you stood in front of it,.....  I used to get palps from standing in front of the bass amp... I always wondered if (even as a teenager) the thing would cause a heart attack LOL   No kidding, I know that our body is electrical systems and some of those very low frequencies (even fireworks) are tough for some that are sensitive to endure.... I could never stand fireworks,....It's painful for me to be close to that frequency...No kidding..

Karyokers Naturopathic bowel remedy...

Put on this helmet, and cure constipation

Come to think of it, I think that's what happened when I was born....My mom was exposed to a really loud explosion, and I went flying out headfirst into a wall..

Loud music lung collapse warning

Experts writing in the Thorax detail four cases where loud music fans experienced the condition, known as a pneumothorax.

One man was driving when he experienced a pneumothorax, characterised by breathlessness and chest pain.

I knew it Karyoker !    I was able to tell just standing in front of the high volume bass cabs in the early 70's that something wasn't right !!   The bass DID knock me hard in the chest.  We'd be drunk and stoned so the reflexes were dampened to an extent that the auditory pain was diminished by the high output of sound, yet you could feel that thumping, and knocking the breath out sometimes.... I was never in good shape either.... Perhaps more at risk... who knows...

KId's today won't beleive the output of a band practice standing in front of a Sunn Coliseum 800 head (projection) horn cab config, while playing a gibson bass....   We were by no means "health and ear conscious" in those days,,,everything was excessive..

Just for drill and FYI I will explain the superhet principle LOL   The old old trf (tuned radio frequency receivers including short wave ) needed all the tuning coils at that frequency and required a switch for all the different coils.  A superhet uses a beat frequency oscillator to convert all freqs to a single freq  which can be tuned and anmplified as as single freq. Then detected amd amplified for audio.. This principle still applies today...

Beause Carpenter ants do not eat the wood they destroy, they have no preference on the type of wood.  only the density and location.

this has been a public service announcement from your friendly certified pest control applicator.

Prod,  you want to offer the best pest control service that's 2nd to none ? Subcontract me,  I'll show up with an SM-58 and PA system and something I can sing-along to.  It'll clear out ANY living organism.

I once lived in a house trailer It was so destitute and depressing the mice were beer drinking alcoholics and the (@$%&#!) roaches commited suicide on a daily basis. If a fly or any other creature wandered inside they buzzed at the windows desperately wanting back out. If bugs are dead in the water dont drink it.. If ants at a picnic are shunning a particular item of food dont eat it LOL

This is absolutely true !   A smart first time home buyer will NEVER put money down on a home if he notices cockroaches running out from under the doorways wearing noseplugs.

You guys are killing me!!! ROFL   I do remember the days of how loud the music was and how we didn't care...The loudest concert I ever went to was Ted Nugent...I couldn't hear anything but ringin for the next two days....

As for a lifetime warranty, I think everything these days is meant to be temporary, if the companies out there truly built quality products they would last a lifetime...Much like cars...The old ones are quality built with REAL steel.  these cars nowadays are only meant to be driven for 5 or 6 years then they go to the bone yard because it's too expensive to keep replacing the stupid parts they break constantly....

Does your tube tester have a rejuvinator on it, I have an old EICO that does.

Very dangerous !  The umbilical cord can get stuck around the babies neck.  Obstetrics has come a long way since the 1950's.  They always face the crown of the babies head to the wall today.  We didn't have other means back in the day's when my folks were having litters.  Today some of you kid's aren't just being delivered Sicilian, but New York Style too !    Especially since that big blackout in 1969.
