And, steven, if you are still reading any of this... tell me what yoour opinion is on this.

You DON'T have to be "licensed" to be a piercer, or a tattooist. Of course, your place of business has to pass the local health by-laws, etc. But, you DON"T have to have a license to do it. ANYONE can charge to stick you with needles.

Gilly, this is a fascinating thought, and I have a rough feeling as to why this might be (although I have little to no actual knowledge of details). But I'll attempt a rough guess. I also don't know how United States laws read. I don't know whether or not this is considered "legal" in *ALL* states or not. I don't know if there are states that license this. A few New England states actually banned this for awhile.. and *MY* guess would be assuming the medical associations COULD ban this from actually being legal they likely would based on *possible* risk especially of certain types of piercings they'd likely never condone...Here's my guess... (and why I think this can get interesting)

The government in at least having SOME requirements does so for the following reasons, they realize that adults are free to certain forms of expression due to how the 1st Amendment reads (body art), yet the government also realizes that when a contract between two consentual adults is made in areas that aren't *necessarily* dangerous involving what's considered "artistic expression", it can't bother taking time to try to prosecute such a complicated case. "Tatoo'ing" WAS an underground artform for years, I think perhaps the government MIGHT be saying....

"We won't license this, because we don't want to appear as though we condone this, or consent to it at all, yet any contract "you two adults" agree on regarding your bodies, and something that *can be* considered fairly safe, and fall under freedom of artistic expression is between you two, this includes ramification there-of.  Because these are general places of business (although we don't actually acknowledge what they do as safe or wish to encourage it) we still feel that any studio type business providing a "health related" service to the public should have inspections anyway.  In doing this we aren't viewing this as black or white, yet trying to prevent it from going completely underground again. So while we won't blatantly condemn something we can't prosecute for (given the fact we are dealing with Constitutional 1st Amendment rights to expression, and something we can't really prosecute or ban)..We won't acknowledge it either."

That's just a GUESS...LOL

Here's what I think Gilly,  It's actually VERY lucky that there isn't a license required, and here's why... Assuming the AMA, and ultimately the government acknowledged any area of this and licensed for it, based on the nature of the service provided, Tatoo artists and Piercer's would likely need to at least have "LPN level" medical training.. In such a case, assuming this were legal, my guess is they'd ban certain types of piercing such as tongue piercing due to the possible dangers being close to the sublingual artery, etc.

Can you imagine the COST if these artists also had to be nurses because of the related areas and equipment they are dealing with ?  Medical boards of course are conservative anyway...  I just don't think the government feels they can shut this area down, because ultimately they likely haven't been successful attempting to prosecute against it being done "underground" in the past. This might actually be something *I* never considered.. The government not being ALL or NONE about something. They just "Kind've turn their backs". Also is there districting required for this ?  I don't know about what type of license the tatoo artist has.  I'm going to do an Internet search now..See what comes up in the UNited States on this area.  I wonder about people that do "Hair implants" and certain other vanity procedures ?  I know nothing about any of this, yet my feelings are (knowing governments), if they could enforce this, of course they would be.

I suppose depending on how long it's been since Tatoo artistry was considered an "underground" activity, laws will in time change as to requirements... When they do, my guess is the several hundred dollar tatoo, will cost  thousands !  The tatoo artist will also be a nurse... or medical practitioner.

Steven--- I am pretty sure that people who do hair transplants, etc etc have to be fully licenced medical professionals.....

But, then again, when was the last time I went in for a hair transplant?

Btw, I live in Ontario. I know for SURE, that things MUST be moire lax in the states, purely fromo watching a tattoo show on TLC the other day. (...Miami Ink?)

They were cross-contaminating, left and right. Not something I would want while getting tattooed!:)

I also never go to places that don't LOOK super professional. I don't even go into the shops that have flash all over the walls, And some big burly guy with a dirty beard, and tattoos all over named "Tiny" comes over to "assist" you. I like a place that I can easily stop by with my daughter to discuss work, without her pointing to a flash piece of a naked woman being eaten by a skeleton is on the wall:)

I also insist to look at their sterilization techniques, etc. Esp with piercers.

BAck in NS, there was a tattoo shop nearby where I lived, shut down due to some sort of "outbreak" that was never offically released. Another artist told me that they reused a needle or something disgusting like that, and were spreading disease. Gag.

Around here, tattoo shops all need regular health officials stopping by, and saying that everything is up to par, etc. A lot of places have been closed in the past, by not passing. However, it really is no different that the same sort of inspection being done in a restaurant kitchen, if you think about it.

The artist I talked to, thought perhaps they can't really License someone to be a tattooist, is because you can't really say who is, or isn't a "good" artist. Not JUST the health side of things. But,  like I said about hairdressing... they CAN pass or NOT pass you, based on your skill as a hairdresser! And, i am sure wwe have ALL seen BAD tattoos:) (yeah, on me!!:)

I am rambling. I am sorry:)

But, piercing in particular, worries me. I HAVE had some... er.. umm.. "personal" piercings done in the past (when I was a lot younger), and never really THOUGHT about the persons level of expertise.... But, nowadays I would be scared to death of having someone just beginning to pierce me.. um.. there!

Just to have my nose pierced, I talked to a LOT of people, and got recommendations, and finally found someone who  had been piercing for almost 20 years. Someone who would sit, and explain it ALL out beforehand, and not be just tryign to shove people in and out, to make money.

And, hey, licensed or not, it COsts a FORTUNE to get tattooed/pierced. Just to have your ears pierced noramlly by a professional piercer (instead of those guns int he mall) (which btw are DISGUSTING, and i would NEVER recommend getting your ears torn open by those!)  costs about 60 bucks per ear!:) My tattooist charges about $100-150/hour:).

Friends of mine used to pierce one-anothers ears with the aid of liquor, an ice cube, and a pin held in a flame (with long nose pliers) to sterilize it...  I really wanted my ear pierced when I was younger.  I was hoping for maybe a 50 or 75 point diamond   My Dad wouldn't allow it.

I have pierced my own ears several times, as well as my mothers, sisters, and friends:) I also did my own belly button. What works really well, is a darning needle, and a cork (or bar of soap, etc). THe reason for the cork, is to have something solid for the needle to punch into, after it goes through your ear.... other wise, it just kinda takes the skin with it. Mind you, my mother was TRAINED on how to pierce ears, and she had no problem with us doing our own. A gun is just terrible. Realize, it uses the earrings themselves, to puncture the skin. THe earring is NOT sharp!! SO, you are just TEARING a hole! A needle makes a nice clean entry and exit, and it heals much faster. ALso, you should use a CBR instead of a stud, so there is room for swelling, without the skin becoming trapped behind the hole, and swelling around the earringback.

Ok, that is my cheap how-to to pierce ears:) I did my nipples in high school. (NOT by myself, by a professional piercer!!) But, they take FOREVER to properly heal, and they were ALWAYS chaffing against my shirts, etc, and after a month, i gave up, and had them removed. Freaking hurt like hell:)

My eyebrow ring got ripped out in gym class, and I never had it redone.  I just outgrew having my naval peirced, and my other piercings I removed, because my (now husband) boyfriend told me, before we were intimate, that he thought that sort of piercing was disgusting:) I only told him a few years later, that I ever had it done at all:)

Somethign interesting about eyebrow and naval piercings- They usually eventually GROW out of the skin, if you leave them in long enough, until they are kinda hanging by the tinest bit of skin:) yummy:)

ok, ignore me, this was a lot of boring nonsense. But, Justin is playing command and conquer, and it is boring me to death.

cartlidge?! Lol, do you HAVE a belly button?!

IF so, i never want to see it:)

Piercings against flat skin just tend to grow out. That means they gradually get closer and closer to the surface as your body grows new layers of skin behind the jewelry. Over time, they get rejected by the body, and get pushed out.

Piercings just are way too weird for me :) But I am not a big jewelry person anyway.  Maybe on day I'll die my hair, that would be about the extent of my "craziness" ha ha!

 wow suzanne... did you realize how totally rude that came out? :?

No, sorry, didn't mean it to sound that way. I was just sharing the generational differences. I thought I said that her particular one was beautiful, too...if not, mea culpa...I was in a rush so I probably didn't re-read before posting.

Again, sorry if I offended anyone.

If it's so personal,  why don't they leave it at home, or in a safety deposit box someplace ?
