Ok, so I finally got my system set up to run my laptop as my karaoke player with an external hard drive, etc. Worked great, except I was getting a humming noise. I thought from reading here that the dell internal sound card was decent enough...(its the sigma tel) Sounds like crap though. So I guess I need an external card... I would like one that would make recording the karaoke performances easier if possible. Need some sound recommendations...pun intended. ;-)

If you have a PCMCIA Slot I would recommend a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA Sound Card It works great, just insert it into the slot and run a 1/8 mini to your sound board and your ready to roll. You will find that the sound with this 24bit card is excellent. If you have been having problems getting enough volume out of your internal sound card you will not have problems any more. I have seen them priced from $68 to $98 and are available almost everywhere soundcards are sold.
If you still have a humm you can get a 3prong to 2 prong adapter from radio shack and you can eliminate your problem. That usually does it.

the hum comes from the power... as was pointed out, you can try the two-prong converter... or in many cases, just go battery if your battery can last for five hours!

Thanks a lot. Ran it without the laptop power hooked up and it had no hum working just off the battery. Sweet... :-) Now I need to post separately on more problems... :(
