About a year ago I bought Xp to put on my system comp. All the hype then was if you changed too much it would ask for re-activation.. So I put it on this internet comp which I'm typing on now... I have run xp at shows ( the dual video is so much easier than win 2k) but after 30 days I have to re-install... Ok I bought another lrgal to put on my ststem.. sp2... Now I'm running Roxbox which will run on Win 98 se but here is the question..

Has anybody figured out a method of downloading updates, putting on a flash (which ones are necessary?) and keeping the DAW up to date? My ATM was shut down (porno sites and somebody was trying to make purchases out of Hong Kong but I'm with Wells  and they shut that down ) I dont go online with a DAW that makes me money...   What hosters are requring updates or having probs with sp2?

Most of the updates for xp are security updates, and if you are keeping your computer offline than they are totally unnecessary.  However if you do want to update you can goto http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Brow ... teria=date
download the updates that you want burn to a cd and install on your DAW or use some kinda usb thumb drive or something.  Pretty easy process.

You can go online safely with your DAW to capture all your updates...Just use proper precautions.

One of the best precautions is to use Firefox and only surf sites related to your needs(OS updates/driver updates/application updates)...Avoid email on your music machine totally...and never leave it online 24/7....Never install any add on tool bars or other silly stuff to enhance web surfing or plugins from doubtful sources.

I keep my OS and all applications on drive C and use drive D just for music file storage. If I am feeling paranoid, I just unplug my files drive until I perform full systems upgrade/updates and follow up virus checks.

I also connect thru hardware firewall with no holes in it and use Grifsoft paid version of AVG, with routine free scan from trendmicro House Call.

My robbie buddy decided to use my music PC to surf porn one day last december....he must have spent the whole day there cause I had over 120 porn related bad guys nested in my machine....Some were dialers, some were trojans, and many were just trackers....But none destroyed any files...It took me two days to clean it all up, tho....So if you have a robbie, then slap him and tell him never to surf on your music machine, then go into device manager and disable your connection cause robbies don't listen....Now you know why I laffed so hard when his big app bucked him half out of the round pen the other day.  LMAO

ME was the OS that should have never been.  It was a total disgrace and I for one never used it.  I bought a lappy that had ME factory installed wiped it out and installed 98.  Just to let you know I run Roxbox as well and I installed SP2 on my xp and than never touched it again.  Haven't had 1 second of problems.  (knocking on the table furiously)

OS's aside, there are routine updates and improvements to many music related applications and hardware....Even XP requires an update for music related stuff everynow n then-it's not ALWAYS security stuff they upgrade....Best choice is to check all your application/hardware sites for version changes and new plug in's...don't forget also your specialized hardware drivers.

If you are running a basic PC with no add on cards or specialized applications, then you can run what you got forever as long as long as you are happy with it...but if you have added music/video hardware, and non MS software players/mixers, then you will need a safe way to update routinely....It's not acceptable to just stick your head in the sand and fall behind cause you are scared of the big bad wolf hackers out there.....If you do that you let them win....Come on, guys, a big benny with many apps you pay for is that they will upgrade often and allow you those fixes and plugins as they develope them....We here can  share how to best lock all the doors and stick our heads in the sand, or we can share ways to remain up to date and unmolested.

this isn't a diss in any way... but as was pointed out: why do you need updates for something that is currently working? That I don't get at all.

The show pc I use NEVER goes online, and once it was built, I've not had any signifigant issue with it. Only trouble was once the Winamp died when I initially booted up. Unsure what happened, but the moving around of the pc in transit may have been the issue. Nonetheless, I was able to uninstall and reinstall it in a minute, and it worked fine after that.

Yeah it works for me 100%.  I use it all the time.  I wish I could help you with it but I didn't have to do anything special to get it to work.

Over forty years Ive worked on analogue gun fire control systems and everything between that and now.  In 88 I got an associates degree in comp I/?O which then was using the 80286 cpu. Of course that is like being certified to work on model a autos. As newer and faster hardware is being developed programmers are writing and updating their software to keep up.. There are laws that any new technology has to be compatible with old ways but they dont want you driving the old model a...

Its things like Roxbox running on win 98 se but I have never been able to get singer history to work because its using a few dll's that even XP SP 2 doesnt even have.. Its just and old man's habit Matt  :) Trying to keep up and not suckin the hind *** all the time LMAO

I have installed win 2k, win 2k sp4 and win 2k and netframe sp1. Also with XP and XP sp2....   The singer history never adds above the first song and if you try to edit a singers history you get a cannot access data base error.  After installing access 2003 I can edit, add songs and it shows up in roxbox but roxbox still doesnt add above one.. I wish it was a stand alone proggie that wasnt integrated with windows. Any programmer that does this has to be concerned with all window os's mackie and linux...It should have the capabilities to be able to be burned into an eeprom and put into a cd player which eventually they will.. And this thread wouldnt even exist.... It blows my mind you need a 500 watt power supply and state of the art pc to play a song every 3 mnutes at a show...When an eprom and a 9 volt battery could do the same thing and wouldnt be any more complicated than the valley dart board sitting over in the corner...

I understand dude... I just look at the pc as a player only. Once done, it doesn't need any updates!
