On the original question of songs where you didn't realise the true meaning at first - Lola by the Kinks took me by surprise when I actually read/sang the lyrics properly.

on misheard lyrics, a song by a comic here in the UK called Ken Dodd called Happiness.  A couple of verses:

Happiness, happiness
The greatest gift that I posess.
I thank the Lord that I posess
More than my share of Happiness.

A wise old man told me one time
Happiness is a frame of mind
When you go measuring a man’s success
Don’t count money, count happiness, oh

A perfectly innocent song, until you drop the "h" off Hapiness, and it comes out as a tribute to the male appendage.

I couldn't possibly comment on whether I sing it that way on purpose <grin>

Misheard lyrics?  They're a RIOT!!

A friend of mine years ago thought this was how Hotel California opened:

On a dark, desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of POLICE DUST
Rising up through the air

I asked him to repeat it about four times before I caught what he was saying   LMAO

WTF is police dust?  ROFL

Won't you hop inside my car?
I got pictures, candy, I'm a lovable man
And I can take you to the nearest star....
I want ya, got to have you, child"

Sounds Like The NAMBLA Theme Song :)

Didn't think I would start a thread this interesting.  Lots of good perspectives from you all.   Anyway...

As noted above, I too tend not to focus on the lyrics first.  And if I decide to sing it or beocme interested in the lyrics, then delve into them.  I think you then get a different "take" on the song.  Kind of like watching a movie w/out the backround (mood) music and sound effects-- totally different experience.

There are few songs that are killer songs and then I really digest the lyrics and think-- man this is strange/lame.  Well I thought I had more examples when I strated this but here's just one...

Rush - Red Barchetta - Ok, song about a Ferrari some buy gets from his Uncle.  Fantastic music/lyrical combination (long too-- 6 minutes I think).  some of the lyric/music combinations give me goose bumps-- the adrenaline/excitment kind (those bits are in the middle)  But some of the lyrics are just -- odd-- I guess.

First Verse----
My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about.
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law.                            (what's the motor law-- in Canada eh?)
And on Sundays I elude the Eyes,           (I like this one-- sneaking out)
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits.        (ok, now we've got more sneaking around)

-- Last Verse ---
Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man.
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan.
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside.    (Giants??? huh)
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside.    (this one seems odd)

i always too "the giants" to be cops or something chasing him.  as for the line about his uncle, i figger he feels like his uncle is with him when he drives the car.  just my thoughts, but that song is EXCELLENT!

Here ya go, I just found this:

"This song, is actually about three boys who get trapped in a mine together. They have water enough for two (hense the lyrics) but when one says he would sell his soul for 'just a piece of meat' they actually eat Timothy. Any of you who heard that Timothy was a Donkey, Well, that's not true. Radio stations began that rumor to try to stop kids from listening to it because it became so popular. Timothy was a boy. Kinda gives new meaning to the song doesn't it. You can verify this online in an interview with Rupert Holmes, the man who wrote the song. Also, you can find the lyrics online at just about any good guitar tab site. Creepy lyrics in a great song."

Gotta go to work, gonna be a long night. Roomie loaned me a stack of DVD's to watch to keep me awake.

kind of gives new meaning to the expression "eat me".
