As a KJ (and some nights as a patron), I just don't feel like doing certain songs that people request of me.  Either I don't have the range for the song, or I don't like it, or i'm not feeling up to it.  Whatever the case may be, I always end up doing the request.  For instance, "Pour Some Sugar On Me" is definitely out of my range, but it was requested the other night while I was working so I did my best at it, when I'd rather have declined.

Here's the question---as a KJ, do you feel a responsibility to perform every request?  If you don't, how do you politely tell a customer you don't want to or can't do that one.

As a patron, how do you feel if the KJ or another person you've asked to sign a particular song turns you down?  How would you like to be turned down instead?

As a KJ...if i can..i will. I think it's cool that someone even thinks of me...LOL...And when i can't...i tell them, " thank you for thinking i can do that..but i can't". The smile..give me a hug and say ok...i do the same as a patron.

I will, if it's appropriate and if I can do it.

Last week I did a song by Ambrosia by request... it was fun to dig up the memory of the song, but I'd already trashed my voice on a Marilyn Manson song! LOL!

If I can do it it, I might - depends on crowd size, as a rule I won't sing at my show.  If I know I can't do it - range (or just lack of knowing the song), then I will just tell them, i'm sorry I can't do that - way out of my range (or don't know the song).

Well last time I was at karaoke.. here's what I saw the KJ do.. which is a thought..

someone requested he and I sing "Picture" by Kidd Rock and Sheryl Crowe...

He got on the mic and said he had a request but he doesn't feel that he can do the song justice and is there someone else willing to fulfill this song request in his place..

someone stepped up.. we did it.. and the crowd was pleased and so was the requester.. they just wanted to hear the song done apparently..

Sometimes I will ask another singer who I know has or can do it, if they would do it, if they wanted to.  If not, I'll do it and say on the mic "It may not be the way you remember it.", or words to that effect.

I get asked a lot to sings songs. I try to keep it once a rotation. I try to explain to people it isn't that I don't want to do it - it is unfair to the people who come to sing, so I to have to wait my turn. I feel pressure to get as many singers in as possible and won't sing at all unless asked.
I'll sing anything even if I don't know it. I just explain to them that I don't know it and will be guessing how it goes, so if they really want me to I will or I can find someone else to do it. I have a wierd knack at this.
Once in a great while I'll get asked to do a song I'm just bored to tears with, so maybe then I will ask someone else to do it. If I'm singing and someone obviously is singing along I'll encourage them to sing with me or take over.
