Just an answer, no-one has to know who you are & you don't even have to post, however answer honestly :D
It was brought up in the other thread that comments in the Singers Showcase always seem to be "Hey Great Job" or "That Sounded Awesome" or whatever along those lines. Do you as a singer want people to give these remarks all the time and get false security (I guess you could say) making you think that you might be better than you are or would you rather have real (sometimes brutal) criticism to maybe help you learn your weaker areas or songs that may not fit your voice/range/etc.
Again, please vote, but no comments are necessary. No one will no who voted or not.

If I ask for a critique, I want to hear what people have to offer me assuming the intent is to help me. I responded here accordingly.
ADDED IN: I do not want to be lied to.

I have sang for a long time and its nice every now and then for someone to say that was awesome.. But one of my biggest satisfactions when I dont get any applause they are accustomed to me and know I dont need it But the crowd is buzzing louder than normal and I know that I enerjized them and on the way back someone looks in your eyes with a love and respect and a big grin... They dont need to say anything...

I sing because I enjoy it. This is hard not to sound egotistical. I am fortunate
to have a good voice and appreciate applause after I sing. I have never had anyone
critique me at a show or say anything bad. If someone asks me my opinion on their singing I'm usually like a Pala Abdul. I try to find something nice to say and then give them small advice. Like- if they are screaming I tell them to try to sing it sweeter. Most people are either beyond help or there is just way to much to fix to actually help them. I find with my experience even when I try to help they don't listen. People are going to do it their way.
Singers showcase - This is different, this is a place I figured people expected critism. I am not the person for that. I think people would appreciate constructive critism. But it seems no one likes to be told they are doing something wrong when they are trying so hard. I think it helps knowing the person giving the critism. If you respect their knowledge and trust their opinion it is easier to take.

I think you may be the twin that was stolen at birth and forced to live in a parish instead of a county like your brother Eric..And exiled to karaoke instead of world fame and fortune that you much deserve.
Some of do recognize a true star when we see them...

Remember his twin died and you are much too young to be his twin!!!
Back on topic...I love it when people give me a critique on my singing, it helps me improve and I do recogize the songs I shouldn't sing when I come out sounding like a frog...I typically do song that have related to my life...I put more emotion into those and they sound better...There are nights that people have asked me what kind of heck I have been through...

My answer is yes. Yes, I like to know whether or not I'm being lied to or fluffed. I think the real reason I was attracted to this website was to find out if I was really as acceptable as what I was being told by people at karaoke night. Sometimes a 2nd opinion is worth a thousand words. So far, I'm happy with myself and feel a little guilty about doubting the word of the people I like at karaoke night.
Now, I can't record or mix worth a crap, but, not everyone can be singer/producer/mixer kind of dude. I will learn though. It's in my programming to not be defeated when it comes to learning something new. If it takes me a lifetime, I'll die trying.
As far as responding to songs in showcase, I'm afraid to critique unless the song was really good. It's easier that way. I just can't see myself making bold comments like......I wasn't that impressed, you really need to work on blah blah blah. But I know someone might really want to find out for sure like I wanted to. It's not fair to let someone carry on thinking they're good when they need more practice.
But in a sense, this topic really shouldn't apply to the singers showcase at all.
A person should really feel comfortable with what they are submitting before they submit it. If someone submits a song that is way below average to begin with, without perfecting it, then they are leaving themselves wide open for critical comments IMO. But thank goodness most people here have the good sense to not totally destroy a persons self-esteem by making juvenile comments. Maybe a singer would like to be critiqued on a more personal level as through a PM from a normally friendly person instead of being almost humiliated publicly? I think that's a good idea. Perry
OOPS!! Sorry, I didn't see the first post about song commenting, so I basically said the same here as a few others did there.
Feel free to critisize me. :ggof:

I give kudos personally to somebody I think has done a good/great job. I don't critique those who I think aren't so good.
Personally, its nice to get an ego-stroke and even better when the crowd goes nuts after I sing-- such a rush and also is something that indicates more than person liked my "performance". I will also usually get: I don't know how you sing like that, my throat hurts just hearing you. 8-)
would like to hear honest critique/pointers but I don't think I've ever gotten them. Although once some drunk young lady yelled "you suck" when she walked by me WHILE I was singing (my 2nd song of the night). I told her where to go in as there was a break in the singing. hee hee. But at the same time I got a round of applause from the "audience". Whatever.
I've said it before-- I don't profess to good/great. Just looking to have a good time and get a rush singing. If people like it - all the better.
Its interesting to see that most folks in the survey didn't care about the critique-- just doing for fun (probably a testament to the folks who visit here)

I assume everyone likes to get nice comments. The more difficult area is what to say when the submission isn't that great. Especially if it's really bad. A lot of people just don't comment so as not to hurt anyone's feelings, which is fine, although then the only thing that gets posted is the positive comments, which isn't an accurate reflection of what the community as a whole thought of the sub. There's no solution everyone's going to agree on. Some people think if a sub stinks, you should tell the singer it stank. Others say you just shouldn't say anything.
I guess when somebody doesn't like my sub, I'd like them to say what they didn't like about it, even if the answer is that they just didn't like the sound of my whiny voice (or whatever). At least I'd know that's a problem for some listeners. The trouble is that as a listener, I sometimes find it difficult to say why I don't like certain subs, or why I think a sub is great as opposed to just good.
It's really hard to get an accurate impression from comments unless you know something about how the listener usually comments. I mean, what if somebody says they think I'm fantastic, but then I see that they left similar comments on subs that I think are horrible? Sometimes I think we take all this a little too seriously.

I got a lot of people who sing at my shows who are not great singers but pull it off in spirit and energy. so is isn't always about great singers. A great singer will finish a song with a smattering of applause while a mediocre singer will get up with a bonnet full of energy and bring the house down.
