OK, one more topic then I'll knock it off for a while! How important is it to sing a karaoke song just like the original performer -- to sound just like him or her?

Sometimes you wouldn't want to. Alot to be said for "creativity".. Many ways people have covered basic ballads such as "Blind Faiths", Can't find my way home..and creative vocal style can ALSO be layered on top of original backings...
Cover artists change whole compositions all the time, IE..House of Lords turned it into a pretty hard rendition in Europe in 1990. Clapton does it with Bramlett (or is it yvonne Ellerman) as a nice Duet, and numerous others do renditions as well.... Many songs people are doing Karaoke versions of are covers of originals anyway.... I've heard more renditions of that recent rendition of "Killing me Softly", than the 1974 Roberta Flack original..... All depends on what you are going for.....Knockoff or creative... Talent is talent....exists in either form...
All depends... nothing carved in stone... Some go for "knockoff" in cover, creativity allows for variation and vast difference in style

i WISH i could put my own spin on karaoke songs..... but I tend to mimmick..... mimick?......mimic? however the heck you spell it...... I can't help but do it!

It's Karaoke...anything goes....If you want to sound lke the original artist COOL! If not, that is acceptable too, just remember to have lots of FUN!!!!!

i prefer to be as close ot the original as possible most of the time, but sometimes you just wanna make a song your own

Years (well maybe decades) ago when I sang Hank Snow I sounded like Hank Snow..But since I have done hundreds of songs before I even heard the original version. Then years ago some gal at a show blew me away with Gayles Cry....I sang it and sang it up 4 keys until I could nail it. That increased my range so that one night I got up to sing Movin On by Hank Snow..... I didnt sound like him!!!! I really have to concentrate to mimic anybody anymore....So the moral is go a few months and sing all new and never sing the same song twice... You will have your own style...

There are two songs where I've been told by various people that I mimic the artist quite well: On The Dark Side and (the Joe Cocker part of) up where we belong. But, I'm not up there trying to do an impersonation, necessarily...just make it sound good. And on those particular songs, mimicking is my most comfortable style.
I just remembered...Chantilly Lace, too. Singing along with it on the radio, trying to sound like ol' J.P. Richardson...I mimic that one too.

I think most people try to sound like the artist very few can pull it off perfectly.
It depends on if you are a good singer or not. I find if you are a bad singer people will
try to correct you thinking you just don't know the song. LMAO

It is not that important at all. The spirit of karaoke is that anyone is welcome to sing and do their own renditions of songs. If I wanted someone to sound just like Madonna, then I spend $15 on her CD, that would be the best bet  . The best singers/vocalists that do karaoke do their own renditions. You will truely never sing a song to your best ability until you stop mimiccing the original artist, because you will never be as good as the original singer unless you sing it comfortably in your own style/ability. If you can manage to do that, then you can even sing it better than the original artist, if you are good enough. Mimiccing is good for the average singer, it is a good way to learn how to sing. Best tip is to try to atleast hit the ballpark and capture the essence of the song. If you sing Barry White..then you better sing it with a deep low voice and so on. If you sing Unchained melody..try to hit the high note in the song etc..other than that it is free game. Karaoke is about having fun and not putting any pressures on yourself. Karaoke is for the singers own enjoyment, not the audiences!

I once heard a guy sing a Barry White song at a karaoke place (I don't remember which song--I think it was "You're My First, My Last, My Everything")--but he actually sounded more like Elvis, especially on the talking parts!

It's humorous watching the neighbor's reactions when I turn on my microphone around the time of the feline mating season early spring... People start staring up in tree's and saying stuff like, "Are those cat's killing each other" ?
