Looks like I'll be starting a Latin Salsa Dancing and Karaoke night at a place I've filled in at before. It will focus on latin karaoke and dancing. I've done a good bit of this at the other club I DJ'd at. Has anyone else had any experience with Latin Karaoke--certainly someone from the LA area must have alot of latin singers. We have a huge latin communty up here in Portland. It's really a huge untapped entertainment market and if what I read is correct, the largest growing demographic segment of the population. So anyone else doing alot of Latin Karaoke or salsa/reggaeton/cha cha cha/merenque dancing at your shows???

Last year I had to get spanish music for the dj library. The first step is learning the difference between tejano, new mexico and other types. I was playing spanish for fill last night with a good latin or rhumba beat and they loved it As far as karaoke get all of Selenas esp Tu Solo Tu... One mistake I made was not starting a spanish section in my books before I started adding some spanish karaoke stuff... SC and others have good spanish cd's now....
Some of my funnest parties are with the old fashioned spanish familys that know how to party....

The club Ill be at has an extensive selection of EXITOS cdgs--Multi-Karaoke brand plus the old lasers 501, 502--so theres plenty---but if it takes off--then Ill problaly start adding more of my own--I think Ill set out a request list and work off that. I already picked up two REGGAETON CDG's-one with Daddy Yankee GASOLINA and the other with Pitbull-KULO. I've even started singing KULO at other Karaoke bars when I can find some one to take the espanol verses.
As to the dance music I ahve a fairly extensive collect of latin music--Salsa, merenque, cumbia, cha cha cha, bachata, reggaeton, etc. But the patrons can help me expand that too--by telling me who the hot artists are.
But have you had any regular custies the sing latin nightly?
And as to the dancing--there's NOTHIN more gorgeous than watching a dance floor full of SKILLED SALSA dancers!
And yes your right about Mexican families that like to party! THEY HIT IT HARD!!

I have a pretty good selection of Spanish songs. I love the latin dance beat.
Only once in a while do I have people sing these songs.
What are some of the popular latin dance songs? I'm not formiliar with
this type of music.

In Reggaeton(Latin hip-hop)--Daddy Yankee: Gasolina, Machete.
Pitbull-Kulo, anything by Tego Calderon, Ivy Queen.
I dont knwo any names of artists in Salsa or any of the other varieties--but I knwo the beats and grooves.
And the beauty of Salsa is that it appeals to all groups--not just latin. Ive never had anyone get up and leave cause i was playing Salsa background during regular karaoke nights--in fact the gringo kids get up and want to dance to it but dont know how--so i have to grab a salsa dancer and have them go over and TEACH them how to do it. But once shown theyre HOOKED!!!
Also they love the big OLD SCHOOL MIC and I keep a pair of conga drums so any of them can sit down and play the congas to the music---msot dont know how so I show them the 2/3 beat and they start picking it up and learning to paly CONGAS at the same time!! And most of the dancers ALREADY KNOW how to paly congas too--so theyll show you how to do it too!

I tried taking it in HS, It was so dang difficult, I dropped the course. Had to retake it in college for med school, Disliked it as much if not more... VERY difficult language, and I'm multilingual (or was). Latin is one TOUGH language to learn IMHO
