The DUI law's slowly but steadily were hurting bars around here since around the inception of the strict laws. Some went with the "designated driver" carpooling, yet those that usually liked "going out alone" or not being tied to the whims and behaviour of other's never went for that..Especially some of the guy's that liked to go out alone, to singles places, and have freedom.. Cop's started hanging out in bar parking lots, 2 for 1 specials were no longer allowed, extra-hour type cabaret licensing became tough to get in CT, and eventually drinking age was raised from 18 to 21...That surprisingly hurt most local small bars, and larger bars in this area too...Places that did hire bands and entertainment (unless they were happy with their lounge business doing so-so between 12-2AM just friday's, took a hit in bar sales, (assuming a person is legally drunk when consuming anything beyond one beer or standard sized shot in an hour, how can they do business) ?  Unless of course in a city where people walk, or college campus (near the dorms) For many non-restaurant type bars that hired entertainment to survive on a customer base that couldn't consume alcohol without taking large risks due to DUI laws, adding factors up DOES hurt their business.  Between raising the drinking age to 21, city zoning's prejudice against bars in historic religious conservative suburban areas (with local ritsy private schools anyplace near-by), and now the "Clean indoor air act",  and the economy, etc... Of course entertainment in such venues took a hit...

These bar's always had a decent number of teenage kids buying beers anyway prior to raising the drinking age to 21..Many that had entertainment consisted of many kid's college age and younger as patrons. Businessmen were getting busted driving home after happy hour too.. Alot of the time, the barbacks, and tenders. (often the owners) ended up early AM "shuttle" services, driving home those they'd serve alcohol to... To not do this, would've meant the person trying to start their own car, would've been arrested the moment they pulled onto public property. Many cities HAVE made life tough for the smaller suburban bar owner.  Naturally entertainment takes a hit.... Thing's in some area's are "anti-bars"

I know Kurt, I'm just talking from the perspective of how cumulatively, these laws do effect a bar's revenue, hence it's entertainment payout.  Like the econ 101 example you gave.  In many locations there're alot of laws today (that didn't exist during the very beginning of the Karaoke trend), and coupled with one-another they are breaking the smaller businessman's back in the entertainment industry.  I'm not stating my opinion's on the law's either way.. I understand them.

[font=Comic Sans MS]Generally I wear jeans and a nice shirt in the bars that I play. If I'm doing a private party I dress according to the party theme, Luah etc. I'll go formal when the occasion demands it but actually I'm more of the long haired hillybilly type guy and love to relax with t-shirts, jeans and tennis shoes. The smoke thing in bars.....If yo don't like the smoke, don't go, or tell the bar owner to get a smoke eater.  With proper smoke eaters and venelation, it can be almost as clean as a no-smoking bar.

I do karaoke in 1 bar with no smokee eaters, and one with....Funny thing is the SMOKE FILLED bar is the one that gets more business.

And as far as attire for sows....
My local bar gigs....Jeans/tee-shirt with logo on it.
Private parties/weddings...it's up to the person that hires you.  You should ask when you make the booking.

And someone asked about getting shirts made with logos...Iron Ons and a printer!

I wear what fits for the venue. One of my gigs requires jeans, t-shirt, and baseball cap to fit in. Another is a nice dress shirt and slacks due to being more upscale and the customers dress up to go there

Weddings I always wear formal clothing unless it calls for casual attire.

I can't wait for bars here in Oregon to go Smoke Free!!!

After my bar gigs I come into the house and go directly to the laundry room and remove my clothes there. They go directly into the washing machine and I close the lid.  If I don't they reek so bad that the whole house smells like smoke the next morning.

One of the major reasons for me working my way out of doing bars and doing more private parties is the "second hand smoke" issues. Sometimes the smoke gets so bad you can almost cut it with a knife.

Oh sweetie, I have to disagree on one point. Smoke eaters no matter how good don't always work well. I work in a small bar where smoke is a huge problem. It is a historical building built about 200 years ago. Although it is remodeled beautifully they haven't conquered the smoke problem. They have 2 commercial smoke eaters maintananced by a professional company and a huge exhaust fan built into the wall. A lot of people don't come because of the smoke. Your right about if you don't like it don't go. I don't have a problem with that a bit! :D
