Hi,

I want to buy a karaoke system for home use and this one caught my eye.

My budget is around $400.

Is it good or overkill for home use?

Vocopro will only hold up for home use. I dont know of any pro shows using one. I had the vocopro-8000 it died in less than a year. I won't spend my money for this brand anymore. I suggest components. possibly a jvc 3 drawer player to start. You will be cheaper in the long run.

Here's my recommendation!!

Squier PA system $230. Squier is Fender's discount brand and Fender products are generally quality stuff, so I'd trust this as well. Plus this unit itself rates well on every site I've seen it on.

The system is 80 watts/channel RMS, has a reverb effect built in, 4 channel inputs for mics and your CD&G player, 3 band EQ, patch points if you care to add on external effects, a sonic processor, etc. later. The speakers are 120 watt, 10" woofers, and have pole mounts (you should go ahead and pole mount them to standing height and you won't have to use as much volume and get higher perceived quality).

3 decent Samson mics with high gain patterns that will make your vocal stand out (I have these and they are going strong after 2 years) $49.00

Finally, dunno if you already have a player (there is not one integrated in that VocoPro system), but here is a player to finish the karaoke system $77:

This one has a key changer and remote. There are mic inputs on the machine, but you'll want to use the mic inputs on the Squier mixing amp unit for better sound.

That is all you need minus hookup cables for a total of $356.00, and it is a PA system that you could upgrade in the future!!

I am a newbie here. When you say "upgrade in the future". which components do you think I can keep, what ones are candidates for upgrade?

Also, for the microphone, my wife really likes wireless ones, do you have any recommendations on that?

In the future, you could always upgrade the entire mixing amp for a bit more quality (higher highs, lower lows) out of the existing speakers, or simply add a bigger amp and use the existing unit as the mixer in the chain. Or you could use the amp in the existing unit and add an external mixing board for more flexibility in shaping the sound.

You could add on an external effects board like a Lexicon or Alesis unit or a sonic processor like the BBE 362.

The stuff I recommended is obviously a verey basic PA system, but there are literally hundreds of upgrades you could perform a little at a time until have a really professional system, a luzury that the vocopro unit doesn't accomodate as well.

Now for a little more $$ ($650 plus you'd need to add a CD&G player), you can get this PA system which could fill up your whole house if you wanted it to:

Bigger speakers, more amp power, more options on the mixer all equals better sound at higher volumes.

I have used voco pro equipment for the past 8 years for my shows.  I have never
had a complaint and I work constantly.  The lower end units for voco pro specify for home use only.

I've had mixed success with VocoPro products.  I've had several players of theirs and they have all been junk, but I've had good success with their microphones.  I had several corded mics that were solid and dependable, and at the present time I am using their UHF wireless system and absolutely love it.  I perfer them over the SM58 wireless unit I own...
