Excuse me if this has been discussed before, I tried a search but didn't come up with anything.
The question is, what do you folks think of shortened versions of songs? I hate them. But I bought a Party Time brand Showtunes CDG the other day and was horrifed to find the songs are cheap 2 or three min shortened versions of the original.
Is there any sure-fire way of ensuring that the cdgs that I buy have the full version of the songs? Does it depend on the brand of CDG, or is there any way to know before buying?

Actually I did start a thread about this. I believe the heading was "The 'long' and 'short' of song versions". You might want to check it out!
BTW, I'm not too fond of shortened versions either!

Does anyone know if the brand "Stage Stars" has shortened or full-length tracks? I am thinking of getting "Gypsy," but don't want to be disapointed again...

There is no way to tell except to get it (or asking if anyone has it like you've done) to know if the song is shortened or not.
Gypsy - Fleetwood Mac? Sound Choice version is entire song.

From karaoke stand point it make sense to shorten very long songs to say, below 5min. This will give more people chance to sing. Just imagine 5 people singing songs the length of American Pie; that's equal to 7 'normal' songs.
Those long (version) songs should only be sung when rotation is short.
I have heard too many off key and off tempo version of American Pie ,and that's when the room at the back suddenly get full.

I'm all for shortened versions on 5min. to 10 min. songs as long as it is of good quality. If someone has found the shortened verion of American pie let me know!

A local competior of mine uses CAVS players, and I have noticed a lot of shortened versions of songs on his system....
Long Led Zeppeling songs, and "Tubthumping" is shoter.
But then again, a lot of the shortened songs are crap versions, where the words are not synced either, espically on "Thubthumping". I assume that the CAVS players use the cheaper, non brand named songs.

Personally I prefer to have songs as close to the original as possible, but it's hard to tell what you're going to get until you buy the disc and listen to it. If someone wants to sing Americam Pie, I simply explain to them that the rotation is too long for that song and suggest they find another song, they usually understand. Catch the "Spirit"

I agree with that, espically twords the end of the nite, when I am trying to get as many singers in as possible.
The next time I print books, I am going to have a "Must be Approved" song section. In that section, there will be songs with "questionable" lyrics, and the LONG SONGS, such as "American Pie". If someone wants to sing a song from that part of the book, they will know ahead of time they may not be able to before they bring up their slip.

Well, dang it all, I _STILL_ want "Psychobabble" (Alan Parsons)--I don't care HOW long it is! (Actually I think it's a little under 5 min.--like 4:52?--but I guess it's still kind of a longie by karaoke standards...) I've been bugging Sound Choice for this song--just ask Knightshow; I've mentioned it in a LOT of threads on the SC board!

Askohen, if you are looking for songs from the musical "Gypsy" (what I think you meant) I would seriously consider the "Gypsy" disc from Pocket Songs - PSCDG 1588. Pocket Songs usually does GREAT renditions of music of this genre. You can go to www.pocketsongs.com and find a listing of this disc that also includes the length of each song. This may help you determine whether or not a particular song you are interested in is the COMPLETE version.
