Well Kathy, Respectfully, If you multiplied the gentleman by 30 and gave it a few weeks, The club/bar would toss the K show.

Unfortuneatly there is a bottom line, Nuff said.

You folks call yourselves professionals HUH? I have seen dogs that look more professional when they chase thier tails...go back and read the threads...

Geez...Louise!

This thread had some agreemant earlier now there is a point to disagree upon...

What happened folks? who cares who drinks water...

Just do your job and mix and make it sound good... or sell your stuff...

Because there are people like me who are trained as sound engineers who are looking at karaoke as a sideline to the lazy live Pro Audio business and right now business is good...

Because the equipment sits idle..and needs to be productive to make any money it can..even at $150.00 per night.. in some markets.. so I'm told... so quit your arguing and get down to the real task at hand.. satasifying your customers...

Brian,

My JOB is to do what the bar needs to have done, in order to make money. If I see a deadbeat hanging around and drinking water, who is NOT the life of the party, who is NOT spending money on food, who is NOT a designated driver... one who COMES in and sits down, expecting to participate in karaoke or sit and enjoy the entertainment value you're creating without giving something back... YES, I'm going to have a talk with him.

YES, I'm going to continue to give kudos to the bar staff. I'm going to continue to promote food, drinks, and other specials.

My JOB is all inclusive. OTHER Karaoke Hosts may be able to come in and spin discs, but I NEED to know that the bar is making money, so I can CONTINUE to work there, get "raises" when I up my contract fees, and continue to grow WITH the bar.

Sooo, who's not being professional? Certainly, not me.

Matt

You guys missed my point... There are always going to be those people out there who are going to beat your system, beat your prices and DRINK WAATER or NOT DRINK ANYTHING AT ALL.. sing like they are choking on bubblegum. No matter what happens somewhere down the line someone's going to try to mess your show up... whether intentional or inadvertantly..they just don't care... what i'm saying is... FOCUS ON THE SHOW!!! let the bar do thier thing!! YOU DO YOURS! deal with bar tenders and the servers on your off time.. no hidden or sexual messages in that one..but just do the show and the tips or what ever your after will come your job is to make them sound good and give them the right track the FIRST time. I'm betting I could atleast something unprofessional about 75% of the shows I go to now a days.. that's 3/4 of the shows.. atleast 1 thing.. that's either a hazard or doesn't look or sound right..

Try me...

Brian D.

I won't take that bet Brian. I know you could find things wrong with my show. Everyone has their own idea of what a perfect karaoke show should be. Plus I am not a sound engineer like you so I know I'm not yet getting the most out of my equipment. Hopefully after a few years of doing this I will get it all figured out.

Brian, I don't think you read my post. I AM doing my job. But karaoke hosting is different in every single place. What works for you may not work for me.

The venues I've been at LOVE that I'm so involved. 3 years at one place, 17 months at another...

I am paid to do FAR more than simply spin discs, or make the sound just right. Thank you for your thoughts, though. I DO read them, and either accept the input, or move on.

Matt

Whatever the purchase is fine. Whether it is water, soda, coffee, food, or alcohol, that is the price of admission to sing A purchase. I do not do this for fun, and the club does call the shots , but I know the abusers so once I get the word they can sing after A purchase. I am a full time KJ. I am not rude, nor crude, I am a business. It is my job to make sure I consistently attract business to my venues or I won't have/keep a job. I have long rotations and it is obscene to have these types clog rotation at 4 minutes per freeloader. 4 to 5 of these is around 20 minutes a round. I know many a KJ who has lost gigs to people who came to sing and said they came to entertainnot buy something!

Here's a thought, why don't we all run our shows with what works for us, and stop trying to convince others that one way is better than the other. I know I haven't been on this board for very long, but in the time I have been here, from the posts I have read, I feel there are alot of intellegent, and talented KJs who seem to run a good show, but as Matt said, what works in one place may not work in another. I also agree with Brian when he said he could find something wrong with 3/4 of the shows, I'm thinking that number should be a higher 100%. Even the person who (if it exists) runs the perfect show, there will ALWAYS be someone who did not get their expectations met. That's just the way it is, somethings will never change.(-Bruce Hornsby?) Anyway sorry for the rant, but aren't we just beating a dead horse, everyone knows what works for them, right or wrong is just a matter of opinion.

Flip,
My 75% comment referred to things that KJ's do in shows they are oblivious to that inadvertinly do to run off patrons, and fire, safety hazards, presevted to both the singers, venue staff and thier staff and themselves.

Also possibly some sound reinforcement suggestions like you referred to that won't cost an arm and a leg either.

Like Another KJ referred to no show is alike... and there is no perfect way to do a show. :)

But Good sound quality should NEVER be sacrificed for ANYONE... no matter who they are... OR what they are doing or did.

Sing SAFE!
Brian D.

Let me get this right.
I tip, I get passed over?
I tip, the mix is wrong?
I tip, the fire marshall closes the show.
How depressing.

"My tipjar is the finest microphone, barglass and straw, that tipping a KJ can get ya!"

Just kiddin'

Flip, Brian, thanks for your comemnts...

I look at these forums as a way to hopefully grow... and to help others with their thoughts. Else, why are we here. If we all know it all already, then why come talk about it? LOL!

I know I grew from these... kobey has mentioned he's really gotten a lot of good information. People like Lonnie, Debra, Big JimmyC and many others all have a plethora of information at their disposal. To NOT listen to the likes of them would be a crime, for an inexperienced host would have to do trial and error to get it all down... and by the same token, we hopefully might learn something ourselves!

I recently changed my rotation tactics, based on a majority agreement from many people...

It made me see it from outside my eyeballs, and that was a truly great experience! IF you're open-minded enough to do so!

Matt

Sorry Chelle... I meant no disprespect... I said "others" becauee i didn't honestly want to write a book!! LOL!

Jimmy C and I've had words, but it doesn't mean that there are times I don't agree with either him or his stance on something.

I've never had words with you, and read with interest your stories from "down under". I honestly want to visit there, but now that my fiance's ex husband lives there, I don't want to chance running into him (DESPITE the size of your flippin' country! LOL! It's bigger than the U.S.!!)

Hugs and loves!

Matt

LOL!! See Michelle! You just answered your own bloody question! If your husband is from the same town that Steve I. is from, then I just bet I'd run into Carol's ex-monkey! LOL!

Seriously, though, we ARE planning a big trip for our honeymoon. We might take a trip to Australia so her kids can stay with him for the week, while we travel around out there!
