! I did an answering machine message to that song once: "I'm a tape recording, short and sweet. Here is the message, wait for the beep. If you want someone to talk to you, just leave your number and a message too." :)

I agree with Matt. You gotta stick to your guns when it comes to closing time.
Maybe you could sing (or just play) the song "Closing Time" by Semisonic. I LOVE that song! "Closiiiiiiiing tiiiiiiiiime, one last call for alcohol..."

Had one of the most borring nights last nite on a reg Thrs 9pm-1am...
9pm...Just playing music, no singers.
11:30pm....First on only singer of the nite
11:35pm...Play more musing, no more singers
1:02am....2 minute left in the last song I am playing, and get to go home!!!!
1:03am... Drunk woman comes up to me..."My BF want to sing "BETH" to me. I know you go over sometimes, can he please sing?" Goes on about it even while I am unhooking the computer.
Told her the BF could have sang all he wanted, if he didn't wat till after quitting time....They had been there since about 10:30pm...GO FIGURE.

This ironic to me... I went to a new place last night to sing. There were only 4 or 5 singers so it was fun to try some new stuff. Time came for the show to be over and the KJ asked me to stay later and sing more even though the show was over he wanted to extend it. I told him I knew his time was valuable and he was probably tired and I was getting tired myself, I had to tell him no. That was very strange to me. It ussually goes the way you talk about here.

I get the late bloomers too. And it's frustrating, because they want it all for nothing, and won't pay you for your time.
I tell those folks that a private party is negotiable, but my rates are $125 an hour to unhook and rehook up the equipment (by now, I've unhooked it all up, and it's mostly packed away), and that the bar needs to be compensated for their time as well.
Or they can perform karaoke from the hours of operation that the bar kindly has negotiated with me on. Also, I don't mind staying over, but they'll pay me for that, and I have to have an hour's notice. I won't do it at 12:55, when I'm ready to go home!
Am I going to walk up to them at a McDonald's drive thru and say I got a lot of folks that want food, and will be there in the next five minutes? Oh, and no more pay for that... your folks don't get paid on the clock!!
DOUBLE sheesh!

You know Matt we were having a dissucion last sun about closing bars... If the bar closes at 2 A Then theoretically the bartender should hold last call soon enough to get everybody out do the stocking and basic cleanup and get out of there by 2 a.. But the bartenders usually are stocking till about 3 a and not getting paid for that extra time...
And I think it applies to us a certain extent too. I have been doing private parties and I tell them I go to XX P Anything beyond that is extra...$50 /hr...

My problem is agravated by the owner. He will try to keep me there sometimes by
singing 3 songs in a row at the end of the night. He tells me everyone leaves when I quit. Da - if he paid me another hour I would stay. His girlfriend likes to walk up when I am closing and ask me please please can so and so sing a song. It happened way to much, so finally I said no. Her reply "geeze". She hasn't done it since. I think it is mostly holding my ground. Things do seem to be getting better. I make it a point to jet out of the bar as soon as I'm done too. I'm there for 5 to 6 hours if they want to sing or talk to me do it before 2am. That may sound harsh, but I think my biggest flaw was being to nice and trying to please everyone.
Knightshow has shown me the way.

good for you Babs.
Next time the owner says "everyone leaves when I quit", write out a bill for the extra hour! BEFORE the hour happens!
Just to see the look on his face! !
Then... and this is only how strongly you feel about it, talk to him about it either before a show, or after you tear down.
And finally, don't take my word as gospel. You don't see my calender filling up, do ya?! You probably are more of an expert on this than I am! sheesh!

Knightshow- All I know is when I tried a few things you suggested my life got a lot better. I think there is always a nice way to address things, but I needed to stick to my guns more and You know, people respect that. Thank you for helping me get a back bone. :hi5:

[quote="Babs @ Thu Jan 12, 2006 9:14 am"]I've got another vent.
I think I am a very nice person, but I detest people who bug insistantly for me
to stay longer than I am paid. I love my KJ job, but need my sleep also.
I work a full time job during the day and a part time job in the morinings.
I agree with you one million percent! It seems to always happen to me. I work right until 2 am, but it's always in the last ten minutes or so that I get people coming in wanting to sing. Their party is over, and now they are trying to crash mine. Then they have the nerve to get upset with me that I can't play past two am.
I wouldn't do it even if I could, but I'm not even ALLOWED to play any later! Bar rules, not mine. I'm sorry, but if you want to sing, you need to show up earlier and get in line like everyone else.
Wow. I feel a lot better now.

I had a guy last night walk in when I had my last 2 singers set up to sing
before I closed. He is begging please let me sing. I told him it isn't fair to the people who have been waiting an hour or more to sing. And if I let you all sing I will be there another hour. I said it over the mic. I have learned if I explain it nicely and make sure I use the mic to do so, they shut up. I think it embarrasses them for asking to sing not having thought of the others that have been waiting. Then I announce what days I'll be back and for everyone to show up early so they can sing as much more.
I'm getting better at learning what works with different people and situations.
It definitely helps me to vent to others who understand what I'm going through.
It just isn't the same venting to a significant other. They just don't understand the
aggravation of being tormented by whiners.
Oh I feel better now too.
