Keep in mind, that country music didn't really make it's way to Connecticut until around 1991..Few in Southern New England really had exposure to Country, and those of us born and raised in PA, Jersey, Southern New England knew what country music was, however no stations played it up here until around that date....Country really caught on from around that date on...There was one station that played some really good stuff, Yet I recall around 1991 hearing for the first time'

"and If I die before I awake, feed Jake, he's been a good dog"...  It was sort've humorous to hear as a first exposure to country, especially for a kid that really was used to hearing predominantly classic rock, and jazz, Show, etc.. Getting airplay

Agreed Michael,  That was Anita Bryant early 60's, and Marie Osmond about 10 years later..   We always had song's that appeared on the top 40 chart's that were country,  also we always heard songs Dolly Parton released which were country,  and country format (blues type 1-4-5 comp with plagal cadence) sometimes a little more variation. Yet I'm not talking about the Bobby Gentry, Parton, Chris Isaac, Marie Osmond ocassional country ballads, or country rock (plenty of that smoother style of course); Yet Lucille was an example too, and that was surprising around 1978 to make the top ten nationally IMHO given the times..

We DID always know what country was, what we DIDN'T have were straight country radio stations like Country 92 that popped up about 15 years back, and was playing mostly songs like "Fly Fishing", "Feed Jake" and some of the more traditional type country song's, and playing them non-stop.... Paper Roses, and the other song's that made the chart's IMHO aren't what I'd call the Elvis style, Judd, Dolly P style  type country, or ballad rock...I wasn't used to non-stop 24 hour straightforward style that one day just appeared on the FM dial up here.. It was quite a contrast to what we were hearing on surrounding stations....Initially MANY had a tougher time with it because of the profound sad stories,  Amazing lyric's and story-lines, but the message was VERY intense !!

Here's the difference Michael,  Groups like Alabama, and alot of what we were exposed to prior to the "Pirate's of the Mississippi" type Straightforward Country was essentially Smoother country rock...Sure we heard the pedal steel, and at times a more folksy style, heck even a few of Marshall Tucker's Song's were pretty straightforward Country but they sat on side two of an album... For instance... Toy Caldwell's AB's song...  Remember that one ?    "If I die at 23, would you bury me, in the sunshine, and let me know that you're still mine.etc"..That was country like the straightforward styles... but we really didn't get the constant straightforward, "back home" type country non-stop on the radio up here on Country FM stations until early 1990's,  I suppose that's what I meant Michael LOL

I should've explained what I meant Michael.... Restless Heart, Alabama, Little River band were smoother ballad type country rock I suppose.... I'd never heard constant straightforward country lyrics like I was hearing around 1991..... My eye's hadn't watered that much since Bobby Goldsborough, and Harry Chapin...

Similary, we got early glimpses of Ska, Raggae, and according to some "Rock Steady"  around mid-1960's with stuff like Desmond Decker's "The Israelites", yet to me around that time it was just bizarre to hear... Still never prepared me for Marley type raggae styles and some of the cross over style that hit later on

Come to think of it  Michael,  The Grateful Dead sort've introduced me to the "hesitation beat" and different rhythmic sequence...

I've got another vent.

I think I am a very nice person, but I detest people who bug insistantly for me
to stay longer than I am paid. I love my KJ job, but need my sleep also.
I work a full time job during the day and a part time job in the morinings.

On Wednesday nights quitting time is 12:00 - the bar is open until 2:00am. I had
7 people stroll in last night at 5 minutes to 12:00 wanting to sing. They don't understand if I let them sing there one song I have to do it for everyone. I'm not staying an hour or more later and not get paid. And D** it I'm tired.

tell them that you get PAID to work. As much as you love it, your time IS money, and if they're not prepared to drop GOOD money at the end of the night, you're NOT stayin'!

I used to get bugged a lot. I tell them quite simply that I'm paid by the bar, but it's over at 1:00 AM... and if they want a private show, or to continue the hours, that I'll gladly talk about my price.

It's only happened a couple of times, but folks DID take up a collection so I'd keep at it for an extra hour!

Babs,

It sounds as if our nights were running along the same line last night... We had a lady walk in at 10 minutes before the end of karaoke.  She grabbed the only book I hadn't put up ('cuz a singer who was new to us was making his list).  I told her that we were unable to take anymore new singers and of course she stated that she had driven all the way from Del City (30-40 minutes away) to sing with us (this is our first Wednesday night at this club).  I told her when we start and welcomed her back on Fri, Sat or next Wednesday.  A little more moaning from her, she asked where she could go to sing the rest of the night and she was gone...

Tuesday night, same thing, although she approached Richard with a little harmless flirting, she was real sweet about it and told Richard she'd be there at 2 minutes before we start next week! :)

Cheers!
Susie :)

I so glad this topic was brought up.As a singer and on behalf and on
the KJ I had a bad night last night too.
I usually go with a few  girlfriends but sometimes they get out of control
(their forwardness makes me uncomfortable),
since I got married
I don't think I'm poutingif I have to move away from them
just so they keep their hands to themselves...
But sometimes when they do their dancing or grabbing or
their remarks
then drunk men do this also!!!

As I'm singing a duet with one guy he's making comments
during the song now I don't mind if it is a compliment before the song ,
but I know the people don't care if he has a crush on me or whatever.
I like to sing but not at the expense of others.Well anyhow our KJ who is also a friend suggested I just go with her and after she'll take me home.
I feel bad because I have been friends
with these girls but it's not fun for me to be the party pooper
just because they brought me there. :(

Thanks for the vent  sorry if this was long

I keep a toy mike handy for the speech makers, turn off the real mike and say that the batteries dead heres another mike and hand him the toy mike.  Usually they're so drunk they can't tell the difference.

I understand your pain! I find until people know you this can be a problem. I detest guys that walk up and want a hug and I don't even know them. They think because they see other people doing it they can. I just put out my hand to shake theirs or give them a very cold hug. If you have friends like that it's hard to have people understand your not like that. All you can do is let the grabbers know very sternly you don't appreciate the attention. You can yell at some drunk guys and they will still not get the hint though. Usually though if you let than know where you stand they will respect you for it! Your girl friends are getting the wrong attention and sometimes that can be dangerous.

I feel alittle bad but if standing up for myself is bad oh well!!

I agree with Matt. You gotta stick to your guns when it comes to closing time.
His statement " the show ends at 1am that's what they pay me for" if you want to take up a collection and make it worth my time we can discuss my price, otherwise I gotta go....works like a charm. If they continue to beg and plead just stick to your story and begin to pick up your books and do your normal closing routine.

If they have been drinking heavily that is a different story. Due to the liquor laws here in Oregon the bar that serves them last is the responsible party so I do not want to contribute to that liability by entertaining them into drinking more. The extra money that the bar and I make in that amount of time is just not worth the risk. So I politely say I'm not allowed to go beyond closing...no exceptions. They may be unhappy with you at the time but they will have forgotten by the next day and you have potentially saved them from harm.

Sleep is a very rare commodity if you KJ during the weekdays and work a fulltime job. Most folks just can't relate to what you are going through week after week to keep your show going and make a few extra bucks. I use to work 50 hrs a week and then do 4 nights a week and did that for 4 years. No way can I do that now, you get burned out fast. I pay KJ's to cover those gigs and I do one night (mondays) and all of the private parties which still keeps me busy but I can actually get away a weekend or two every once in a while.

Never had a puker on stage, thank god.  But like others, I do get the people that come 15 minutes before quitting time, and are pissed about not being able to sing.  If it is a good nite, and ok with the bartenders, we will pass the hat and [lay longer, dependent on the ammount of tips in the hat.

As far as the fighters, the are ignored and the music goes on, as long as they get no where near my equipment.  Usually a couple upstanding patrons will houl them out.  Had a couple incodents where a few got way to close to the equipment, and me and a buddy hauled em out, bouncing thier heads off the door jambs on the way out.  But then again I am 6'2" and 220lbs, and my buddy that helped is about the same size.  Needless to say, the bartenders (mostly female) love us!

I am hoping I won't have to vent tonight after the show. I do work a 40 hour a week job and am a personal trainer in the early morning 2 days a week. I had a long day today - I am an office manager at an accounting office. ( tax season, yuck!)

Wow, Babs.... thats a grueling schedule you have~  :worship:

I work a 40 hr. a week day job too ... which is very demanding... and then depending on the time of year.... have anywhere from 1 to 3 nights of Karaoke ...
8pm-1am.... and of course, we do a lot of weddings on the weekends.  You need to stick to your guns ... closing time is closing time.  We always tell those that arrive late and don't get to sing (we run a 40+ rotation most nights) that we start at 8 and they should try to get there earlier next week.  Its tough to disappoint someone, I know... but you too have a life ... and that has to be first priority.  Hang tough, gf!!  :hi5:

I HATE when this happen's...I have a right as a male to insist a woman respects me for my mind... My body is my sacred temple...Usually I'll politely tell girl's that they are starting to invade my personal space....After two warnings it's litigation for sexual harrassment.... This reached a culmination about two years ago.... I finally had to storm up to the stage,  grab the microphone from the KJ... and say;

"Listen girls, enough is enough, If your hands were meant to constantly be reaching for my @$$,  I'd have Nacho's printed back there....   The "I break for unicorns" sticker isn't an open invitation to treat me with disrespect"

I can't remember what thread we were talking about new song night, so i thought I would throw my comments in here.

Last nights karaoke went well, no complaints. I had about ten regulars and to keep from getting bored we did a round of trivia. You had to answer a trivia question to sing. The next round we played scareoake. If you didn't want to play you had to pick a song you've never sung before. I have to do that for the premadonas who don't like scareoake. How I do scareoake -The people in the audience yell out a number, then the person has to sing what ever that song is. We have a guy that is close to 7' tall - He sang I'm a little tea pot.  LMAO

Scareoke sounds like a blast.  Tonight is the slow night our our bar ussually only 8-10 singers, if we are lucky.  I'll suggest that to our KJ, I'm sure he'll do it....Thank for the new idea... :dancin:
