I just got my first laptop, a hp zv6000. Has plenty of everything what do I need to get my karaoke discs on the harddrive. The new plextor says it will only read the cdg's. Is that alright? do i need to purchase a hosting program? all Im really looking to do is just eliminate taking all my discs everynight thats it.

I am so confused as to why people push expensive software when there are others out there that can do just as good a job for a fraction of the price.
Sax N Dotty Show Presenter $42 (may want to wait for PRO vers)
Winamp and plugin....Free unless you want to directly play CDG discs then $24 for the CDG disk player plugin from Yannic.
Insanity, Insanity.....I am in the KJ business to make money, and the cheaper my costs ($42 S&D vs $200 MTU) More money I have$$$$$$$$

Main reason for me is I prefer the way the kma files sound over ANY mp3. It's also nice to have a program that will do all the ripping as well into 1 file as opposed to 2 separate files. I have tried the free & cheaper stuff, wasn't impressed 1 bit.

Plextor is STILL the preferred choice for any program & you can get a good one for about 50-60, but the new MTU is compatible with more non Plextor drives now days as well.

In total agreement as to the myth that if it costs more it must be better.
I'm a RoxBox man myself but will state that being a former S&D man that their software has value too. Tried Hoster and unlike RoxBox and S&D found it hard to use when searching for songs. When you have three or four singers waiting to give you their requests verbally because they're too drunk or lazy to look in the book, you can't be taking the time to figure what search button you use. With both S&D and RoxBox it's type as much as you need to find the song you want and then selecting the song.
Only edge MTU's product has is the outside cdg playing, keychanger & multiplex. But that should be easy to fix 1:keep your cdg player, 2: if you can get an outside keychanger and 3: have a multiplex button available on your mixer or don't bother importing the multiplex songs.

Perhaps the MP3 you heard wher ripped with a bad encoder, or at too low of a bitrate. A good ripped MP3 file can sound as good as the original CD track!
I dunno, when I can use audiograbber and MP3G toolzs for FREE to convert CDG discs, I will be GLAD to use seprate programs rating than paying bigg $$$$.
But if you are not in the karaoke business to make as much money as possible, or independntly wealthy, go ahead and use MTU....Just MHO

I was using Tricerasoft CDG ripper (Audiograbber never worked for me) & it was ripped at 192, 256 & 320 - could tell the difference EVERYTIME. The same file ripped on Hoster at 192 had no distinguishable difference between that & the original.
Just because someone OPTS to spend money on a program that fits their needs - 1 time - doesn't mean they aren't out to make money. That's an assinine statement!

It sounds like government intelligence! Comeon now, twansenne, be realistic. Perhaps the MP3 Encoder you were using was not up to snuff.
Personally I use the lame encoder ripping at 256, and can not tell the difference between that and a CD track. And I will do a side by side comparison for anyone willing to come to one of my shows.
And once again, I am still in it to make $$$$, and that is the bottom line, and I want my bottom line to be in the black as much as possible. Therfore I use...
S&D presenter ($42)
Winamp & plugins (Free except for $24 for CDG disc player plugin)
CDRWIN ($34)
Mp3G toolzs (free)
....Spent about $100 on software, as compared to about $300? for MTU.

Guess, you are probably one who buys preloaded hard drives off of E-Bay too then runs multiple copies off of that one. Save a lot of money that way, why buy the discs when you can steal the music? Do you also load customer discs into your system & then put them in the put the next day? Crap I should see if I can tap into the clubs house system too, save me money on my equipment. Hell with little to no start up costs, I may be able to make a killing. Take over all the clubs at $50 per night - hell get massive systems going for a bulk rate, shouuld be able to make a killing. COOL IDEA!!!!
Hell I was going about it all wrong, I was actually buying all my stuff!

Well Tricerasoft is no crap software. http://tricerasoft.com/
I spent a total of $179 on Hoster & it does ALL your 4 programs do in 1 program. Burns to 1 file & sounds better in a smaller file than 256 which equates to more songs on a hard drive.
Used MP3G toolz but it wasn't any better either.

I suggest you keep your comments about piracy to someone who actually is a software/music pirate.
I DO NOT NOR HAVE I EVER PIRATED ANY MUSIC OR SOFTWARE! I DO NOT BUY PRELOADED DRIVES OFF EBAY! I DO NOT COPY COUSTOMERS DISCS! I OWN EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE DISCS THAT I HAVE CONVERTED TO MP3+G FORMAT!!!!!!!
Yes I was YELLING!!! Comments like that should be kept to yourself if you do not know what you are talking about.
Last year I spent over $4000 on new music (karaoke & DJ)!
Just becasue I use cheaper software that can do the same thigng that MTU/TRICESOFT/ect... does, does not mean I am a pirate!
DO NOT CALL ME A FRIGGING PIRATE/MULTI-RIGGER!
I AM WAITING FOR AN APPOLOGY!!!!!!
