SO Ive been reading and basically this is what I have come up with. This is only for my home.

I want to try to use the HT speakes I have (JBL S38) What do you guys think of those? I really needed bookshelf speakers because they are below my projector's screen.

So for now I think this is what I need:
1) Powered Mixer (in case I decide to get another set of speakers somewhere down the line although I doubt it...)
2) Wireless SM58 mic.
3) Now I would like to rip cdgs to my computer into mp3g files ,and then burn all of those to one DVD so I canfit a lot and have a hardware mp3g player. Do those exist at all? I would also need this player to play DVD-Rs as well of course, and multisystem DVDs in case I get european Karaoke DVDs.

I think this is how it will work:
I connect the mic, and the player to the mixer. Then I connect the mixer into my Onkyo reciever. And all should be well.. Do I have the connectoins right?

I am looking to get a mixer around $200 can I get anything decent that will allow me to control an echo on the mic etc...? What do you guys think? Please feel free to make suggestions?
But I really need to know if there are any karaoke players that will read the mp3g from a DVD-R so I can just put all my songs there, and have a backup copy of the DVD. Thanks in advance.

Just found the CAVS DVD203G player on k.com. Seems perfect for me! It looks like I wont even need a mixer for it right? I can simply connect to my reciever via didgital ouput and use component out for video. What do you guys think of this solution?

Will it display a lit of songs if I burn them to DVD? And do you guys htink my idea will work of ripping to mp3g omn computer and then burning all of that to a DVD-r so I Can fit a crapload of songs. Also will I be able to make a "playlist" of songs to sing with this unit? It seems like it is everything I wanted to do! Including microphone echo etc... What do you guys htink ?I am really excited about this.

Also how would it compre to the API DVD-330 and RSQ RSQE500 players? Seems like the API has more features in terms of mpeg4 etc.. Ughh this is so confusing. Can you guys recommend something please? At least im happy nwo because I wont have to spend more $$ on a mixer wit hthese players :)

better to use your computer than the cavs. Better sound quality. that player does not per say play MP3+G iin the manner you might think. you first have to shift the format to superCDG and then burn it. For that you need to purchase new software.
By going computer, you can get ripping software for $0. Audiograbber is freeware and it rips CD+G, providing you have a CDG compatable(Audiograbber is one of the few rippers out there that is friendly to a lot of writers) writer or cd-rom drive.

You don't "need" a mixer with any player you buy unless you are interested in really tweaking the volume mixes between the music and the vocal (which most players allow anyway) or having alot of control over the EQ of each channel. All the mixer is doing for you is breaking up the individual inputs and giving you control over each input separately instead of together (the overall mix) like you Onyx reciever does.

As you are discovering, there are built in FX and even some EQ functions on lots of karaoke players out there. Though a PA mixer will hook up to a home theater receiver, they are not made for such a purpose and you won't get the full quality out of either component in that set-up. A PA mixer is made for a PA system!!

I would recommend you buy an RSQ 333 (same as the JVC 303) player and just hook it up directly to your receiver. This player is pretty much the pro karaoke industry standard. This player has three trays, a key changer, echo FX, and a multiplex function as well as volume controls for each individual mic. They list for about $299.99 though they typically sell for about $235 new on Ebay. That gives you pretty much everything you need for a home setup, and you can always integrate this player into a PA system if you decide to go that route later on.

Thanks guys. So the RSQE500 is out of the question? and what about the CAVS DVD203G unit? I need to get all of this set up by Feb 2nd because that is when I am having a party in my hosue and want to have some fun with this.

So out of those players and the jvc one you posted about, which one would make more sense? The main thing is I want to rip my files to mp3+g to my computer, and then burn all of those files to a DVD-R. Then I just want to put the DVD-R in to the player and be able to select which song I want. Which machine will allow me to do that?

I will also be building a home theater PC for this, but I would really prefer a seperate karoke thing, because I wont have a keyboard and mouse to control the computer but only a remote. I really appreciate everyone's help but I need to make this decision ASAP.

by the way the RSQ 333 (same as the JVC 303), does not play DVDs which I need because I want to be able to get some foreign Karaoke DVDs in mpeg2.

So basically which one would you guys recommend? I want to load say 1000 MP3+g files on a DVD-R and be able to play them back. Also the player needs to have decent mic inputs, and some effects on the mic (like echo etc...). I will be getting a wireless SM58 for this.... Thanks in advance.

*EDIT* Also Danny, if I go the computer route, (Which I will definitely have because I want to have a movie server)  I wont have a keyboard or mouse to control it. I will be useing Windows MCE and it's remote. Is there any software that I will be able to use the remote with? Also what kind of sound card will I need that will allow me to connect the SM58 mic to it, and perhaps have a knowb or two for some effects? Thanks.

I saw a new unit from RSQ called MK22. It seems to be a lower profile version that plays not only the CD-G but DVD as well. It seems to be a solid unit but I have not played around with it to tell you if it has the RSQ quality. I would assume it does. It's affordable as well at around $100 on ebay. May be an alternative?

Way too much confusion...

If you are ripping the songs to yuor computer, why burn them to a DVD to play on a player.  Just play them off your PC.

Buy yourself a cheap ($50-$70)mixer such as....
http://www.behringer.com/UB802/index.cfm?lang=ENG

or if you want FXs ($80-100)....
http://www.behringer.com/UB1002FX/index.cfm?lang=ENG

Hook your computer an mikes to the mixer, run the mixer to the Onkyo receiver, but watch the input volume levels, any you are done.

Well, that's a good start after being here for such a short time.    In the name of all that's good, do not mention Behringer in these forums (please) :O

:oh yeah:  LMAO
Behringer can not be beat for their $$$ value.  Been using them for 3 years now (Switched from crate/peavy), and will never look back.

And besides, it is for his home system.  Why pay an Arm and A leg?

When these blow you can ask about speakers that WILL handle live vocals.  Sorry HT speakers aren't designed for live music - which karaoke is 50%.

Hooking up via the digital out you will not get vocals through the player.  If you are going to be getting a mixer, then you will want your mics AND player to go through the mixer for better overall sound quality & eq options.

I put together a system for my wife for Christmas. I was gonna use my custom built theater speakers (comparable to 800-1000 set).  After reading this forum, I decided not  too and I'm VERY GLAD for that. I really don't think they could take the beating for very long.

I got a Fender Squier 4 PA system ( the mic that comes with the PA isn't very good though) and an RSQ MK22 mentioned by an earlier poster.
For home use in my 26x16 room it works great!! The RSQ is a great player with key control and loads music very quickly. It has all the DVD features that you could ever want as well. ( it's used strictly for karaoke here). Feature that I like is that nearly all settings/adjustments can be done with or without the remote.

My wife sings well and has let loose a few times, the system handles it very easily. My stereo speakers would have been destroyed by now. Good luck

Ken

Thanks guys! Ken that unit loks promising. Are the mic inputs on it any good? Digital Echo etc...

I am now strongly considering this unit. How does it compare to the RSQE500 though thats on k.com that is about the same price?

And you guys are starting to scare me now about the speakers blowing since they where expensive HT speakers. Thing is if I get new speakers they would have to be positioned away from the projection screen because there is no space for them below the screen. Do you guys think its okay to have the screen on the left side of the room and the music and speakers coming from the other side?
Basically the basement is divided into 2 halves by two small coolumns. So one have of the room is the screen and should I chose to get new speakers they would be on the other half. Wouldn't that be weird to have the video on one side and the sound coming fomr the other side?

It's only wierd if you feel it is.  If you don't mind the sound coming from another side, then don't worry about it.

Hmm I dunno. I just tried turning on some music and went to the other side of the room and it does feel kind of weird. Especially if I where to sing it doesnt feel like the voice is coming from where it should be. Are you uys sure those speakers can't handle it? What if I turn the treble down?

Thing is I have a friend who just uses his Aiwa (or something of the sort) stereo system and plugs amic into there and has nver ahd a problem with those bookshelves blowing.

Plus that would mean I would def. need to get a powered mixer wihch would put me over my budget of $600. I have a pair of old speakresI can try out so if they blow then I will def. have to get something. But I just dont have the $$ right now.

So you guys think the RSQ MK22 is good for the mic inputs and playback? Its actually on ebay right now for $170, is that too expensive for this player?

*EDIT* Wait I jut had a thought. For Home use if I go with PA speakers do I still need 2 like I would for home theater, or is 1 speaker enough since they are specially made to full the room?

No they WILL work - for awhile.  Most home karaoke tends to get into it & the volume starts nudging up & up & before you know it - POOF!  They also won't sound like they should either since they are voiced for an entirely different reproduction scenerio so you may find yourself needing to eq MORE than normal to get the sound you want.

Sure you may get lucky too, but if they are as expensive as you say, do you really want to risk it?

Most receivers have a separate A & B switch for the main speakers, you could still use what your receiver, just connect the PA speakers to the B speakers & turn off the A.  You just need to get speakers that will match the ohms load on the receiver.  8 ohms is as low as most typical receivers will handle.

Honestly most players mic inputs aren't very good, for home use you may be happy, but most people end up getting a separate mixer of some sort.

Most karaoke music is recorded in stereo so you would need 2 to play back in stereo.  Some songs are recorded as the original meaning some instruments & sounds are panned to one side or the other & if you run 1 speaker, you won't hear the intruments or sounds on the side without the speaker.

Maxse,

In the past 2 weeks, RSQ MK22 goes on eBay for less than $130.  People spent more for the extra CDGs.

Here's a link to a pic and specs..
http://www.emkaraoke.co.uk/newsite/inde ... lang=en-gb

I got mine from an Ebay store for 115 Canadian ( +- 100 US) + shipping.  New unit that came with a mic and 10 discs.
I got the Fender PA system Online for 300 Canadian ( approx 280 US). Got a used 15in monitor for 10 bucks.

I'm ( really the wife) extremely happy with the setup but I need to hunt down a Shure mic and more discs to finish the system off.
As was mentioned, the more beer your friends drink the louder the singing and screaming into the mic will get and away goes you HT speakers :(l
Good luck

Ken
