I have been a professional musician for many years and have a complete Professional PA system, Mackie 808s, Yamaha Club S115IV mains, monitors, mikes, etc. Seems all the (remaining) clubs in my area that were was devasted by Hurricane Katrina are going more and more to Karaoke since so many musicians lost most of their equipment. I have been approached by club owners about starting Karaoke. Trouble is, what other equipment is needed I do not presently own? I realize I need a player, video monitor and a sack full of music but what else? I have plenty of power with the Mackie, 1200 watts and a great pair of mains, but again, what else?

Players are cheap enuff, it's the music that will bite.

I just gave away a great player that you could have used.

Where are you located?

I'm located in Bay St. Louis, MS. on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The eye of Katrina passed directly over us. New Orleans is about 50 miles to the west.

That's about it!  You have a nice system to work with.  Might consider a sub, but probably won't need it right out of the gate.  Music is where you're bulk of money os going to end up.  Cheap music generally equates to crap quality (as a rule).  Sound CHoice Foundation 1 & 2, Bricks 1-5 & a couple of the Pop Hits Monthly  packs such as the Millenium should get you going nicely.

I didn't mention it because I rarely use them but I also have a pair of Peavey subs. Just too big to haul around!! I am completely lost when it comes to obtaining music so I appreciate all the help I can get in that area. For example, I have no idea what Choice Foundation and Bricks are!!! Is it best to purchase the 500 or 600 or 1200 or whatever, song package deals that are listed on some sites or is there a better way to get the quanity without compromising qualilty??

Again, just starting you probably won't need the subs, which model are the Peaveys - definitely don't need to bring in a couple of dual 18's or anything.  Most of the time you can get away with just 1 in most places, but it does make a difference in sound to have 1.

www.karaoke.com is a great place, always have specials going on - sometimes better than others.

Again, the music is where the bulk of the money is going to be invested.  These are all Pack sets again of the most requested tunes.  Great starter set if all purchased & probably the best quality with minimal repeat titles.

Thanks for the  info on the sites. My Peavey subs are SP-4's.  What format does most of the KJ's use? CD, CD-G, DVD, etc?? Again, I'm new at this so I appreciate your patience and replies.

Mainly CD+G's, that's the most popular and easily available. I agree with Lonman, Sound CHoice Foundation 1 & 2, Bricks 1-5 & a couple of the Pop Hits Monthly  packs such as the Millenium should get you going nicely. Try the sponsors at the top of the page for best prices.

After reading other postings regarding player-mixer/amp hook up am I correct in assuming on my Mackie 808s channels 7&8(stereo channels) should be used instead of the tape input? If connected using channels will it give me control over the EQ, lows, mids, highs and effects? Also I would appreciate some input regarding a decent player. I have too much decent stuff to screw it up with a junk player.

JVC 303 Karaoke Player Pricey, but worth the money!

Coreect!  The tape inputs don't give anything but volume which with the way each disc (even song) can be differently recorded, sometimes it's very much needed to eq the music.  I've had to drop bass levels often or add treble, etc...

Also, the standard price for both the RSQ 333 and JVC 303 seems to hover right at $235 on EBay. Just find one of the stores with BUY IT NOW and alot of transactions with good feedback and you really can't go wrong.

Stay away from private sellers or stores with limited sales/feedback or under 98% good feedback. There are alot of scammers out there among the private sellers and fly-by-night ebay storefronts.

That should save you a few bucks!!

Just make sure that whatever channel/channels you bring in the player has input trim...........If you don't believe me, just jack each side of your player into a pair of mono strips and see how much the input varies from disc to disc....Some are extremely hot and will overdive the mixer inputs....Same thing when playing back via winamp or other software based players.

I use a Rapco TDIBLOX interface to connect my players to the mixer. It matches consumer grade players to the pro level mixer inputs with balanced XLR....The inputa to the BLOX are RCA....It even has a volume knob in case you need to tweek the input.
