I'm thinking he had the bass boosted via EQ or BBE or similar, or just too hot from the board.

Keith you might be right.  :(   Using XLR out from board to BBE out to JRX Sub out to Eons.

Here is his quote....I shortened it a little, but it states his signal path from board thru the JRX sub to his EON tops....

Ooops, sorry I missed that, I stand corrected  :worship: Must've hit a reply before I got down to that one.
Then he needs to confirm in clock reading what 3/4 means.  If it's 3:00 that is still WAY too high a setting for a system - especially with the sub.  Then where is the eq on the DFX set at & all channel eq's as well.  Also how is the EON hooked up through the JRX internal x-over - ie high pass or through?  If it's hooked up via through & the lo is set that high, the EON will get the entire low frequencies which could start cracking it.  Also how high is the input sensitivity on the sub itself?  It may need to be set higher if he's cranking the bass that high.

Yep, Lonman....I knew you would see it too.

He was overdriving his nice speakers-asking too much of them especially on the bottom end....Then to compensate, he wanted brite highs too.

A typical grin or EQ smile.

It will eat a speaker eventually especially at high sound levels.

BBE'S are just like EQ's!...They can be boosted too much!

3/4 on the Lo - does that equate to 3:00 oclock>?

Sorry not three quarters but 3 or 4 on the BBE I never go past 4. It seems I do need to more volume at one of my venues. Should I add additional Eons or change out to passive cabs w/ and amp?

I'd say pull the BBE out of the loop then - it really isn't doing much to help at this point.
How is the rest of your eq set up on the mixer & the EON's coming out of the JRX - high-pass or through?  Also does the sub sound like it's pushing adequately or do you feel you need to push more into it.  This may be the input sensitivity on the sub - where is that set?

2 more EON should help quite a bit for the volume issue.  Won't help much in the bass area unless you add another JRX along with the additional EON's.

Going with the passive & amp won't increase the volume any, adding speakers will.

Lonman I have the JRX set on "Thru" so your saying I should have it set on "HPF"?

The eq on the mackie is set flat with slight adjustments when needed and the eon has the high at 11:00 oclock and lo at 12:00 oclock. The problem Im having is that the singers have been sounding tinny and I've been aproaching this the wrong way to solve it. I use shure 58 beta mics so I think they are ok but I might have to go with an external eq for the mics to help sound.

Set the JBL subs to high pass! Use the built in crossovers in the sub/subs!!!!!!!!

If you have a graphic EQ on your board or outboard that will allow you to cut freqs down  to 40-60 Hz, then use it when at high sound levels....Your tops will live longer and sound better.

Check with WWE Chairman Vince MacMahon.  I hear he has a JBL.  LOL.

Most definitatly set it for high pass.  That's the reason for the sub to relieve your mains don't have to push them low notes.  Right now your mains (the EONS) are pushing the exact same low frequencies as the sub - not good.

I would set the eq on the EON's both at 12:00 to start with - these are no longer going to be pushing the deeper bass frequencies.  Set the 5 band eq on the DFX flat at "0" & all channel eqs straight up.  Now listen to the system with the sub set for high pass.  How does the bass sound?  Does it need turning up?  Raise the input sensitivity on the back of the JRX first, no eq'ing yet.  Do this test with a disc you feel is recorded very well, clear, & solid.  No sloppy bass beats or older music with no clarity.   The 5 band should remain as flat as possible with possible minor cuts at 250hz & 3.5 khz.  It's always better to do subtle cuts over adding for eq's.

The Beta 58's are a great mic for experienced vocalists - meaning the singer needs to hold it properly singing right into it.  Any "off axis" holding of the mic is going to diminish the sound of the singer greatly meaning you'll need more adjustments at the board.  You shouldn't need an external eq for these although a hi & lo that the DFX has isn't really enough of an eq for vocals, however you can make them work.  If you need to add more midrange you just need to cut the hi & lo on that channel back a bit.

Try this:

Download Egytain Lover's "My Beat Goes Boom" if you don't already have it.

Set your sub/subs for high pass.

Play it loud thru your system.....At the subs, start to cut the lowest freqs....Listen to how the bass tightens up as you cut the lowest freqs....And how the highs brighten up.

Afterwards, patch in the BBE and start with both controls at 12 o'clock.

If then the sound is right, but still not loud enuff, you need more speakers/amps.

Thanks Lonman and Keith for all your help. :hi5:  I made all the suggested adjustments during set up and set the sub at HPF and wow   what a difference. Everything sounded great. And Lonman you were right on it was the Driver. Bob
