What a great idea! A slow night would definitely benefit from this!

Another great idea! I'm definitely going to try this! I've asked people to come up with me in advance but never thought about getting them to help mid-stream...

I just love the exchange of ideas here! Susie

Like Crank, I also do a "New Music" show. It actually started out as just a slow show with a few singers, so I stared singing stuff that I had never sung before and started calling it "New Music Thursday." Well the few singers that were there saw me stinking up the joint, and figured that they had nothing to lose so they started singing new stuff too. I always say to go ahead, theres nobody here but us karaoke chickens anyway!
Over time, the singers became VERY supportive of one another trying new songs. I think part of it is because they are actually decent singers (and the regs know this) so if they stink, people know it's cuz of the new music. After about a year, this has actually become one of my most popular shows and I still advertise it as New Music Thursday. My singers all know that this is the time and place to get out and try something new and we fill the place week in and week out. Sure we get some stinkers, but it's really great when you find a song that's a keeper!

I am comfortable with it and it helps me get through the 'first song jitters' and loosen me up a little Gosh, Never, I thought I was the only one who had a "warm up song" and got those "first song jitters". Even though I've been singing at mostly the same place for a couple of years, and all the locals know me, I still get nervous on my first sing of the night- sometimes my second & third. Quote: ............and loosen me up a little (when my slo gin screwdriver hasn't yet )
Haha, there again- me too. I try not to always drink when I go out, cause I don't typically drink lightly if I start hitting it at all........ and I'll go through the old "should I have a vodka/cranberry first to loosen me up, or start with my warm up song to get over my fear"......... then, 9 times out of 10 I do both, .
As to the original question here.... I guess I do both. I ALWAYS have my favorites, and no way am I gonna throw them out for the night just because the bar has heard them a few times in a row from me. I sing em' all the time, then they get kinda boring to me, and I come up with a new list of my favorites to do....... and the cycle repeats itself. I'm not doing the same songs every night that I did every night 2 years ago. I'm usually always doing a few regulars, as well as a few new ones. What's fun though is when you run across one that USED to be your favorite- like a year ago- and you had forgotten ALL about it....... and doing that one again. Kinda like an old faded pair of Levi's you had put in the bottom of your closet cause they're realllllyyyyy worn out, but you don't toss them. Then you find them one day, and all of a sudden they're not quite so worn out looking, haha, they're your favorite pair again. (oh, and by having my "favorites" I mean maybe 3-4 songs, not like 10-12 I repeat constantly) But until they start cranking out new songs as fast as I want to learn 'em & sing 'em, you gotta repeat them somewhat.

Well I just completed my first "New Song Wednesday"! I told a friend I was going to do at least 2 new songs & ended up doing 5 (I'll definitely keep one, maybe two)! One of our girlfriends did at least 3 new songs (all of them keepers) and a couple of guys in the place did it too!
What a great idea Crankitup, thanks for sharing!

I also did my first "New song Wednesday". It worked very well.
I did it with a little twist though. If they didn't pick a new song they had to do
a song from someone else's list. Some people have a hard time finding new songs and I got tired of trying to pick them for them, so if they didn't give me a slip I just
picked one for them from somebody elses list. It made it a hooting fun night.
I thank you also for the suggestion!!!!

I like the twist! Heck, I got tired of trying to find a new one for myself! If I pick from a regular's list, chances are I've heard it a time or two recently.... Another good idea!

Up until recently, I found myself doing the same 5-7 songs. That started getting boring, especially when I am working shows and you hear the same songs done over and over.
I do a LOT of 80s hair bands, which gets people feeling the party spirit...haha. I started out doing mostly Poison songs, Warrant, Ugly Kid Joe, Bon Jovi. I have started getting a little more risky, doing a country song or two, (I hate country, generally speaking) and doing more new rock (Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Weatus) and more challenging hair metal...(Firehouse, Dokken, Motley Crue, Cinderella) and I have even done some old fun rap stuff...(Beastie Boys, Vanilla Ice) I have butchered the hell outta some of it, but I also found a lot of new songs to add my "regular list". I even get requests for some of the new ones....Which helps with the confidence factor.

I've been doing shows for 5 years now and I get tired of my regulars singing the same thing over & over. I constantly encourage all the singers to try something new. I try a new song every week. Kamakazi Karaoke: the art of singing a new song for the first time in public. My singers have such a good time trying new songs and they write "Kamakazi: on the top of the request slip so I can let everyone know. The crowd gives the singers a great big "Atta Boy" for trying new songs. If you encourage them to sing new songs, they will sing new songs.

Quote: Always doing the same songs?
Yep, This is one of those area's of life that I feel is best left untouched... "To each his own".. Some people have diverse interests, and some people will walk into your place always wearing that same one (or two) shirt(s), or that same ugly jacket that went out've style 30 years ago...etc.. As people born into a culture where we are free to choose, (or simplify the process by never varying routine)...We constantly hear cliche's, "One man's heaven is another man's hell" "One's medicine is another individual's poison" etc... bottomline, *THEY* have chosen to do something that is comfortable for them, or maybe REALLY love that song, and can't get enough of it... Finding certain things boring in such a sense is also *MY* particular subjective feeling. Certain opinion's and feelings (we have) should often *NOT* be impinged, or become sources of rain over another individual's parade, because our feelings, and thesh-holds of tolerance are also *OUR* individual preference. Here's the question. "Why are they doing the same song" ? We are talking about an area of aesthetics. It's a simple answer IMO. Because it's what they feel most comfortable doing, and it's what they want to do, and choose to do as adults in a leisure setting. It's their choice correct ? Their moment under the spotlight. Who am *I* as just another person with my own quirks as well, to individually quantify how much a person likes, or wishes to sing "Their song" ? Because whether it's same song, same meals, clothing, same repetitive mistakes in life, or my "same" typing in this forum, while other's party, and have sex and lead more productive lives.... What's boring to me might be another person viewing their favorite movie at the cinema for the 20th time.. This is a great example of "Live and let live". Who am I to analyze, or make a value judgment regarding what other's do for fun ? You might love traveling all over.. I might never want to leave my home town..etc. Different strokes, I say leave this one alone ! If they chose to do the "same songs", sobeit, it's not my business to question that.... and to do-so makes about as much sense as calling up a top-40 radio station complaining to them that they play the same boring songs over and over again. In these particular cases, let a person's Significant other, or mother tell him that he's driving everyone crazy assuming his rigidity has reached obsessional levels... It's none of my business. Of course at times, certain venues do intercede.... The old Guitar room at the music store sign; "NO STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN ALLOWED" Yet in most cases, if someone has found a really comfortable pair of shoes that they like wearing.... It aint up to me to ask them to wear a different pair..Sure, sometimes we see people that don't know when to take them off, and they really start to smell bad... I suppose I have a right to walk far away from them.... but that's about it. These are personal things... Quote: I would think it would get kind of boring, not only because they've done it before, but because they've mastered it.
Is it about mastery ? Let's make the assumption, that even if it is, according to some, it's only the mastered performance (assuming such an illusive term really meant much) that one should perform on stage... It's not an incorrect mindset

very welcome. glad i could be of some use to someone for once! :dancin:
maybe in 2007 i can come up with another good idea! hehehe
as for steve's lengthy reply, i agree to an extent.... some folks don't want to try new stuff and you can usually see that. others would like to branch out, but just need that little nudge to get them started. i guess a good analogy would be the mother bird that pushes her fledgling out of the nest so it will fly..........................
or it will SPLAT on the ground below, but at least it will get some applause!
