Hello, I've never sung karaoke but there's a restaurant near me with a private room and I've booked it for Saturday and invited my friends to join in!

The trouble is I quickly got a look at the setup and it's really old. They don't have more than about 500 songs and nothing much since 1980. I know that there's some old songs that are really great, but they're not the ones I was hoping to sing.

I didn't get much of a look at the system but I'm guessing it's a CDG system. It's the kind that has lots of discs inside it with a changer. It has a remote control where you type in the number of the song that's listed in the song book. They don't have a KJ, they just leave you to it.

So anyway my question is, if I get a custom CDG disc professionally burned (http://www.customburn.com/store/EMKaraoke/index.php)  how easy do you reckon it would be to insert it in the system. The person that quickly showed me the room wasn't very technical and said it wasn't possible. I'm good with technical things but don't want to screw up their system! My step dad has a home CD player that's a 200-disc changer and that's no problem. The thing with the karaoke player is that I don't know how it connects the CDs with the song numbers in the book.

A realise this is a bit of a vague question because I don't know what model the player is. But it would make my evening if I could sing the songs I'd like to - I just hadn't heard of 95% of the ones in the book.

It takes a cdg player to play cdg's.. I would check out the system see if it plays the cdg's there and get used to running it..

Then I would recommend seeing what your friends want to sing and go down to Walmart and get PartyTyme cdg's...

Well that's the downfall of these private rooms, they don't generally have a lot of music.  Since most of these systems in the private rooms haven't really upgraded over the years, I would be willing to bet it is a laserkaraoke system, meaning it's not cdg compatible.  If it's as old as you think, the early karaoke systems didn't play burned discs either.  But without model numbers or system specifics, this answer may be kind of hard for anyone to answer.

It sounds like one of the old cdg/laser jukeboxes that were around in the early 90's... all the disks are kept inside the machine... DKK used to make them ... big... bulky but they were pretty cool... would love to get my hands on one... - tig

Oh, sorry. I'm english, imagine me saying "How much do booths run at?" to myself, puzzled, with a british accent like in a war film.

Anyway, the place I'm hiring does a deal where if you get at least 15 people together to pay £15 (about $25) for a Japanese meal then you get the room for the night too for £30 ($50). Originally I didn't know about extra $50 - otherwise I might not have gone for it given how old the setup is.

That way round I don't feel bad asking my friends to stump up $25 for a meal, wheras I would feel bad expecting them to pay for karaoke when most of them don't know they like it yet...

There's a more modern place around here that's about $75 an hour for a room that fits 8-10, and you have to hire it for at least two hours (and no food included).

Lonman was right, it was a laserdisc system. That meant all the songs came with videos of people from the 80s with big hair and clothes doing crazy things! We picked the old songs that we knew and had fun!
