Just out of curiosity, what do all you vetren singers think about as far as singing the same songs every single time? I am by no means a vetren, only been doing this for maybe a year and just go usually once a week on the weekends frequenting many different bars. However, sometimes I go to the same place a couple times in a row and notice that "The Regulars" always ALWAYS do the exact same songs...

I would think it would get kind of boring, not only because they've done it before, but because they've mastered it. Usually when I go, I try to do at least 2 new songs and maybe one repeat. Its more fun to try something new and if I screw up, who cares...its more fun when people mess songs up here and there

What do you guys think?

My first song of the night is always the same.  It is my 'warm up' song. I am comfortable with it and it helps me get through the 'first song jitters' and loosen me up a little (when my slo gin screwdriver hasn't yet  :lol: )
I wondered if people we getting tired of hearing it,  then one night the place was full of people who had heard me before so I sang some other stuff and pretty soon, I had someone come and ask me to sing it.  So I guess it was ok after all
Everyone likes to sing what they are comfortable with but I try to throw at least one new one in each time just to make things interesting

But no, I am talking about people who have like 4 or 5 songs and they sing the SAME 4 or 5 songs every weekend. I just don't see the fun in singing the same couple of songs EVERY week...I would hardly classify you as "Always doing the same song"  :worship:

I have this going on at my shows. I try to encourage people to do new
songs. A lot of the time I'm picking them out for them. I don't complain
if someone always does the same songs over and over, but it gets really boring.
I have about 8-10 steady regulars that come in every Wed., Friday and Saturday. It is hard for people with little range to have a variaty of songs or sometimes they just have an unbudgable comfort zone. It helps to play karaoke games because they end up trying songs they normally would never do.  I know I have found a few songs from playing scareoake that I do now.

I personally get bored singing the same songs. I'm always changing to new stuff.
I have a couple songs people will request me to sing that I am tired of. I'll do them if
I can't find someone else to. It's not that I don't like the songs, I'm just tired of them.
"Redneck woman, Bring me to life, Son of a preacher man" blah blah blah

There is a certain excitement or adrenalin rush I get from a new song. Yee Ha!

I have maybe 10 songs that I can do pretty well, plus another 10 or so that if I'm having a good night I'll get away with... and loads that I've done once or twice and sucked at badly.  But they're across a range of styles and genres so there's quite a bit of variety.

I would love some more songs to do, but I have trouble choosing stuff that I think would be in my range.

I keep wondering whether it would work to set up a website where people could submit their list of songs, and then it would give you a list of songs that other people who can sing your songs can sing.

Hi Steve - What are a few of the songs you are comfortable with? I could give you some ideas if you'd like.

 I like to do a lot of different songs.  I go to a lot of different clubs, and I try not to repeat the same songs too often at the same club--I don't want to make people (including myself) sick of them!  And I often try songs that I haven't done yet.

I just like to sing at least 4 songs especially if we have alot of singers .
I have friends who always sing the same ones (i just try not to hear that
song on the radio)

most of my regulars have songs that they feel comfortable with or that have meaning to them.  i pretty much know what they're going to sing and in what order, which is fine, but once in a while i will toss them a curve.  i'll cue a different song that i know is in their range and genre and encourage them to sing it.   then i put in their regular song and let them sing that so they sing two songs back to back and hopefully they will branch out and start to do the song i picked for them.  my crowd trusts me and knows i would never sabotage their night of fun.  i've only had one person that i can recall tell me "uh-uh!  no way!  i ain't doing a new song!"  as for my song repertoire i have about 50 songs that will do on any given night, although i've been blessed witha  pretty good range so just about anything anyone wants to hear (short of rap and opera since i can't understand the words) i can do.  alot of times, i'll get started on a song and see one of my singers singing along with it.  i love that because i'm wireless!  i go right over to them with the mike and hand it to them so they ca finish the song.  invariably they will sing that song next show!  there's lots of little "tricks" to help singers expand, but making them feel good about thier singing is the best!

we did a neat thing (my wife actually started it) called "new song saturday" this past weekend and it caught on like crazy!  everyone was doing completely new songs all night and we had a blast!

You've got a pretty good list there to start from.  There are a bazillion Elton John songs that you can try.  Do some of the other ones you know.  Billy Joel also falls in that same general vocal range, and HE has a whole lot of songs out for karaoke.  Cat Stevens is right there, and you may also want to try some of the Hootie and the Blowfish tunes or the Barenaked Ladies, they are in that same range too.  Careful of the BNL though, they often rely on tricky rhythm hooks for their music which makes them great crowd favorites if you can master them!

If you want some country, Alan Jackson should be in your range and so will Chris Cagle, Hank Williams Jr, and Kenny Chesney.

As a KJ and as a singer, I always recommend that you have the KJ lower the key of a song one or two steps the first time you do it just to make sure that it doesn't get to high for you.  Then, after doing it you can decide if you want to keep singing it that way or if you can go ahead and jum it back up to normal the next time you try.

Spreading the karaoke gospel

Although I only karaoke about twice a month, I wish someone would pick my songs for me. I have a hard time with the same song thing myself. I have tried different songs, but without practicing them first, I shy away from it. I just think there's nothing worse than trying to sing a song when you don't have a clue on the way it's presented, the lyrical timing, etc...

But in my case, when my voice naturally sounds like the dude from "Creed" and "Pearl Jam" no matter what I try to sing, I have to be careful.

I wonder how those other songs I've ever done really sounded? (scratches head)  :wave:

And oh yeah....I think I also sound exactly like "Hootie".  :shock:

Steve - The first song that came to mind was Elton John, Still rock and Roll to me. It is an up beat song people seem to like.
It sounds like you are in a higher range. You might want to try some old Beatles tunes. Easy to sing and you probably have heard them enough times they would be formiliar.

Thanks for those suggestions (and sorry for kinda hijacking the thread).  I'll certainly try and get familiar with some of those songs and give them a go  I've done some Beatles songs in the past, Let it Be and Eight Days a Week I can usually just about manage so I might try a few more.
