Hi all,
I'm in desperate need of advice and hope someone can help me.
I'm marketing an online karaoke contest for my company and am wondering this, when it comes to getting business done, should I be contacting the club owners, or going through KJs? It seems a lot of the club owners I speak with really don't have a clue as to what's going on in their own clubs and keep referring my to their KJs. The rub is this, the participation fee should be paid for by the club as they receive the increased revenue from participation...NOT the KJ. So, I'm in a bit of a quandary and would be veery happy for any input anyone can give me.
Gratefully yours,
Roxie

Can't a newbie girl get any help around here?
Well, I just took the bull by the horns and started contacting the DJs and KJs in my database and the response has been beautiful! So, I guess I answered my own question!
The KJs/DJs are loving our concept and some want to host it themselves, while others plan on promoting it directly to the club owners. Since they've been so kind and helpful, we've instituted a Jockey Bonus for any referral that lands a participant.
Wooohooo, people helping people; gotta love it!

There's a link on the contact page of our website that says CLUB Info...it details a lot of the contest... The home page breaks the contest down and explains it all.
The fact that it's hosted in venues all over the U.S. and then club winners are voted on by OnlinePopstar Members on the site is what makes it cool. All the club winners get to have their winning songs posted live on the net for the whole world to hear!
Melly, the contest is scheduled to begin in Feb. and runs for 12 weeks...I'll post about the experience when it's all done! It should be a really neat experience...

Contests suck.
You have a nice "Braveheart" page, and I applaud you for your initiative and energy. As a karaoke host, I hate contests, and you can't convince me that an online one is ran right. Even local ranking is so personally divided...
wish you the best of luck. I initially avoided this thread like the plague... but saw it wasn't going to die.

Well, I beg to differ with you on that one, Metalgod. If So. Cal. were as contest apathetic as you claim, please explain the many thousands of hopefuls who auditioned for American Idol in Los Angeles? Besides, karaoke singers love an audience and what better audience than the world wide web?

Sorry to bore you with my question. I really didn't ask it to bore you or garner any sarcasm from you. And you probably should have continued to ignore it.

American Idol = Stupidity on a massive scale...
you asked for advice from KJ's "urgently" and knightshow gave you some... whether you liked it or not... he is sarcastic by accident... I am sarcastic by design...
any KJ who has ran a contest knows the damage they do their club after the final votes are tallied and carnage is cleaned up... the majority of people get their feelers hurt because all of their drunk friends constantly tell them how good they are and that they should be on the radio (radio station KDEF for the hearing impaired) and when they don't finally win the "Karaoke Supreme Being of the Universe" award they are crushed... Hosts that run a business depend on those customers to come back again and again and the small benefit of a temporary increase in business for the train wreck called a karaoke contest is not worth it in the end... most of us can't stand the type of person that a karaoke contest attracts too... let the divas stay in the closet where they belong... there is nothing worse than a person who thinks they are god's gift to karaoke and they couldn't sing the alphabet song without making babies cry...
you will find that most seasoned and experienced karaoke hosts hate contests and those who do like them really don't count anyways because they are just here for the beer... we can always agree to disagree, of course, but you would still be wrong... thanks for playing- tig

Oh I was ignoring the post also, but now I to feel the need to chime in.
If you read the other post in this forum ( Your opinion about karaoke contests) where we are discussing contests, I think you will understand where we are
coming from. Unfortunately veteran KJs will tell you contests are distructive to
our business. Don't take it personal - it's just our opinion.
I will wish you luck, but I would not be interested.

The contest that i have observed went like this:
20 people enter the contest.
10 of these cant carry a tune in a bucket.
Out of the last 10 people, 8 need serious vocal training as they cannot seem to stay in key with the song they sing, and the 2 left are actually Good.
The People chosen by judges for the finals:
The 2 Good singers... 1 female and 1 male.
2 singers of the 8 that need serious vocal training.
4 of the other 10 which are the worst singers of the entire group.
Then they go to the finals and the its basically a battle between the 2 Good singers as the others are eliminated due to obvious reasons.
Between the 2 Good singers...1 female and 1 male....The female is chosen winner because she wears a more eye catching costume and puts on a bit more of a show as she has more dance moves than the guy who is just as vocally talented but doesnt dance enough while singing and has a less flashy costume(clothing).
Then after the female wins, she thinks she is good enough to go pro. when the doors are closed in her face due to the fact that she simply does not have the right looks...even though vocally she is really good, then she starts getting a reality check and finds that she is not going to get anywhere in the music biz.
She then gets down about this and eventually stops doing something that she once loved...Singing....Singing because its fun and something she enjoys.
Also...all those who didnt get picked for the finals who were better than some that did get chosen...these also eventually loose interest as they see how things are done in these contest...meaning that some of the worst singers are chosen just so that the obvious Good singers will have less competition....
Then there's all the rest, who eventually see how this all works and they loose interest.
In the end....these people stop going to karaoke bars due to loosing interest in singing just because of these contest and how they are run.
Who looses in the long run? The clubs and the Kj's do because now the customers are not coming in spending money to drink and have fun singing karaoke.
As far as a online contest...If people want to participate just for fun to see how they stand up against every one else who joins in....then go for it and have fun i say.
But to take these contest serious.... , In my opinion thats silly LOL
But then this is only my opinion and observations, to me karaoke is for fun. If a person is serious about trying to go pro with there singing...Then put together a band and get your stuff together....meaning your own songs and music and then head on out and do some gigs touring around and selling your CD's. When you can show a record label that you have made $40,000 to $80,000 bucks selling your own CD's during concerts...Then maybe they will take interest :)
Thats my 2 cents

I do a couple of contest a year and we have a ball. It's about how you pass on a positive attitude to your singers. If you're negative about contest it shows but if you're positive and stress that it's "All About Having Fun", they go over well. I know all about the conflicts, frustrations etc. that are contected to karaoke contest but I tell the singers "If you can't be in the contest to have fun, Don't get into it because I don't want to hear the BULL." I don't usually have any problems and everyone has a great time. I surely don't see karaoke contest spelling DOOM for the industry or Ruining anyone's life. Have a Great Time with your contest, they can be very rewarding and lots of FUN!

My opion, like most all oter KJs, is that a contest will hurt, mor than do any good.
And it also kills me in the rules for this contest, that no copied discs are allowed becasue of copyright infringmants. Has the licensing been obtained to post the "winneres" on the internet? Pot calling the kettle black?
