I've heard it done, by someone who had enough power in her voice to pull it off, and it went down really well

Laura, that's "The Pussycat Song" that you heard. It has to be done right to go over well. Not everyone can get away with it. I don't sing it like Connie Vannett does. I personally don't like the song at all and am tired of 4+ people asking me to sing it when I walk in the door, but the thing is, people go CRAZY over that song! At every bar I've sang it at from the eastern coast states to here in western Canada the reaction is always the same, craziness!

...this may sound corny, but to really get a tired crowd fired up, we've used a disc with tv themes on it:
Love Boat
Those Were The Days
Movin' On Up
Gilligan's Island Theme
EVERYONE knows these tunes and joins right in!
If you can tolerate it, it might be worth a go!

Hmm..."The Weight"...I've thought about singing that one. I haven't heard anyone else do it yet.
I was at an all-ages karaoke place once where some little kids sang "Ice Ice Baby'. Well, actually all they did was chant "Ice ice baby" over and over. At the same place, some other little kids sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", and all they did was repeat one line over and over: "Take me out to the ball game...take me out to the ball game...take me out to the ball game..." I wish I could get my son to sing with me at all-ages karaoke things--we could do better than that! But when it's time to sing, he doesn't want to. Oh well.
Now which song is "Paradise"? Sade has a song called "Paradise" (which I haven't heard at karaoke before), or are you referring to "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" (which I have heard people sing a few times)?

Agreed, in all this time we've only had one couple that does this song that I find bearable... Great KJ break song tho, it lasts forever!

I was talking about Meatloaf's "Paradise," which is the same as Roxie's personal hell. I like the song for parties and all, but hearing it butchered at karaoke is torture. Folks usually begin it with all sorts of enthusiasm, but then it just kind of fizzles out and turns into an endurance test...
Yes, I put the two heads shaking "no" next to songs that should never be done at karaoke.
Laura, I know exactly what you mean about your son not singing in public...my kids are the same, except my oldest (recently turned 16.) She's actually posted a few songs on our website! I guess it eventually rubs off on the kids, . This is the very reason I'll be adding a kids page on my site -- so that parents can upload their kids' karaoke recordings. That'll be a lot of fun!
"The Weight" is a good crowd song because they all like to join in on the cool harmonies...something about it...
It's fun reading everyone's input on this topic!
Roxie

Hey everyone! This is my first post!
Anyways, here are my list of songs that I sing...one repeat song is usually mixed in with two or three new songs...and keep in mind...you gotta act all crazy and stuff while singing them!
- I Blieve in a Thing Called Love (The Darkness)
- Wonderboy (Tenacious D)
- Ice Cream Man (Van Halen)
- Groove is in the Heart (Deelite)
- Fire Water Burn {the roof is on fire} (Bloodhound Gang)
- I Will Follow (U2)
- One More Minute (Weird Al)
- Thriller (Michael Jackson)
- Chocolate Salty Balls (Chef)
- Smells Like Nirvana (Weird Al) <-- This song requires the gargling of water
- Rockin the Suburbs (Ben Folds)
- Oh Darling (The Beatles)
Those are just some...I have others but would need to think of them LOL

Ode to my car, Adam Sandler
Not one I could do, and it wouldn't go over well in a venue where lots of crude language was inappropriate, but I've heard it go down a storm

You think thats bad...I did "At a Medium Pace" by Adam Sandler and of course while singing it, went up and "danced" with the females in the audience... it went over well! LOL

Done by "decent" singers... we have found that these songs tend to liven a place up a bit....
Mustang Sally Old Time Rock-N-Roll You Oughta Know Footloose Celebration Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy
Just a few off the top of my head... I'll add more if I can think of some.

Songs that were clear definitions of a period of time... when musical tastes actually changed and seemed to spark a whole interest unto themselves! Trendsetters!
"Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B"
"Big Spender"
"Jump, Jive & Wail"
"Come On Eileen"
Then there are those that are just flat out controversial in nature.
The comedic songs of Adam Sandler, Dennis Lehrey, Bill Engleval...
I saw something NYE that really kinda freaked me... I played as an outro bit, the video to AC/DC's "Thunder"... and people absolutely went ballistic!

Our closing theme is "DREAM WEAVER". We have people stay to the very end of the show... just to hear it every week. Now there's a song EVERYONE sings along with... and its actually quite low-key.

Does anyone know that are some pure CHEEZY songs that go over well? I've been thinking of just winging it and doing some on slow nites or just when I've done the new songs that have been added in their books and I make it a thing to never do the same song within a month at the same show.
So I've been checking out some STYX songs for the cheese factor(Babe, Mr. Roboto, Blue Collar, but Renegades isnt too cheezy). Perhaps Orleans "Still the one", and I'm looking for Rex Smith's "Take my breathe away"

Don't know if I'd call 'em cheesy...but there's a few I do that seem to get the crowd into it...USUALLY...
On the Dark Side--John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band (aka Eddie & The Cruisers)
Tainted Love--Soft Cell
Seven Bridges Road--The Eagles (believe it or not...but I haven't been able to do it since early December because of this dayum cold I can't get rid of)
Black Water--The Doobie Brothers
Chantilly Lace--The Big Bopper
And I will admit to being one of the dayum fools who gets up there and hogs the stage doing Paradise By The Dashboard Light...however, I try to always make it fun and a little bit theatrical...I just need a female that can keep up with me on that song!!

remember I sing in Honk Tonks.....there is a song called "Barlight" by Charlie Robinson....we changed a few words and my buddy added harmony....now we have a local legend......the chorus goes..."barlight bar bright first bar I see tonight wish I may wish I might find someone to hold me tight".....we changed it the second time through to "wish I might find some girl to hold me tight"....then in the last verse we sing..." wish I find some girl who's really tight"......Honky Tonk humor....when I sing it else where....ah like the "Inn"....carpet on the floor.....I keep it original....not exactly received as well revised
