jeans and heels....*growl*!!!
what was the topic?
oh yeah, dress for shows.....
i generally dress for the venue, which in my regular gig means a UT shirt and shorts. very casual, but every once in awhile, just to throw people off, i'll go to the nines in jeans, boots, felt with a shirt starched so rigid it'll stand by itself!

as of recently, there is NO smoking in any public buildings..... that means.... there are no smoking in bars, restaurants, etc. so I can actually WEAR all my NICE clothes to the bars now without REEKING like smoke...
Non Smoking in Bars = Death to karaoke.
As far as bar gigs i wear comfortable nice clothes. Weddings a Tux is standard unless the couple request a suit or casual attier. Private parties I generally wear dress pants a shirt and tie.

"Non Smoking in Bars = Death to karaoke."
Gotta think the result will be just the OPPOSITE.
Smoker folk and karaokers will still be going to bars, smoke or no smoke.
But what you will see happen is all those people who couldnt stand smelling the smoke or choking on the smoke or thier eyes burning, now starting to go out to the previously unbearable smoky bars. Should see an increase in NEW visitors and bar denizens.
Its like with my wife----I end up having to go karaoke on my own all the time--not because she doesnt like karaoke per se or going to see a band, but because the horrible SECOND HAND SMOKE is unbearable and the stench residue still on clothing after you leave. But if we had the No Smoke law here shed be out with me all the time(even if she does get bored with it--shell just bring a book to read). So I hope in the next few years we DO GET the Anti-smoke law-for jsut that reason. And I gotta believe theres a whole POPULATION of people who would come out to the bars if they werent smoky.

No matter how cold it is I wear a sweatshirt so I can wash it every time. I too won't take my leather purses, can't get rid of the smoke smell. Susie

I'm not a raging feminist, but I think guys can get away with wearing a t-shirt, jeans and cap more often then women. If I went wearing no make-up and just combing my hair and wore a t-shirt and jeans, the bar owner would be like, "Are you serious?" Mind you, for women t-shirt is a vast explaination for tops. With men, a t-shirt is a t-shirt, with women, is it a baby tee? Is there print on the front? Are the sleeves short? Is the t-shirt fitted or loose? I guess if some of those fall into the t-shirt category I guess I do wear a t-shirt and jeans 99% of the time. I just think it's hard for women categorize what they wear because there are so many variations. Getting dressed up for me might be what another woman considers laid back. Who knows. . . .pictures anybody? I'll get some pictures up sometime. I've never been a "girlie girl" as my daughter-in-law puts it... Even in my "prime" I hated to wear dress clothes or a dress; my H.S. graduation picture is in a black t-shirt & jean jacket and I had to borrow a dress from my sister for H.S. graduation--- I was P.Oed that the H.S. REQUIRED girls to wear a dress! I've never been to much for make-up, hair color or curls. The only bar we host in that isn't a neighborhood bar is a sports bar so 1/2 the people wear jeans, the other 1/2 casual dress clothes.
My t-shirts are regular t-shirts (I used to collect them), there are no tight ones, none with no sleeves, none that are low cut... We've been doing the same show for years (thank goodness) and when I have dressed up, for our anniversary dinner, etc., our regulars do a double-take!

It's funny you say that Susie because I knew when I was typing that response that you were the exception already. Which is not a bad thing at all.
After reading all of this I realize. . .as long as you're wearing clean underwear, you're good!

wow no smoking in bars - I so would be curious to see what would happen to the
bar I work in. It seems as if everyone smokes. Some nights my eyes burn.
I do believe the clientel would change a bit and you would see a lot of people sneak cigarettes in the bathrooms and outside. In Chicago they fought the ban on cigarettes. They thought they would lose a lot of business, especially convention people. People would simply book conventions in other cities because of the no smoking law.

I have been in such bar where the owner imposed a smoking ban. It works. If you want a smoke there in a room to puff away; just like in the airport. I am a smoker myself but don't really like the smell of a smokey bar.

as far as the no-smoking thing goes...
actually.... I find that the karaoke bar I frequent has actually gotten WAY busier since they banned smoking..... but it definately did change the clientel.... mind you, they got a new KJ too, so that's probably what brought in new ppl.... not sure...
point is.... there seems to be a LOT more younger college age people there now.... a lot of them are a little more health conscious than the "cougar" generation! HAHA! (didn't know what else to call 'em)
Besides.... it's SOOOO much easier to SING now without hackin' up a lung and having to drink a gallon of water!
as for nightclubs n stuff...... or the dirtier pool-hall-dive type bars..... I dunno..... haven't been to one since the change. Not sure how it affected them.
I did read in the paper about some bar owner who bought himself a school bus that he parks outside his bar..... heated and decorated.... that's where his smokers go. It's a loophole he discovered. Kinda funny. It is his vehicle, and it's fully insured. It just happens to be parked outside his bar.... and he lets his "friends" smoke in it! hahaha!

well I work at a truckstop (glamorous, isn't it?)
the gas pumps there are ABSOLUTELY-WITHOUT A DOUBT- NON SMOKING within 25 feet.
it absolutely blows my mind how STUPID some people are though..... I was running the till the other day and this itty-bitty car pulls up PACKED with young guys.... MAYBE 18... doubt it.... and they all start piling out cuz they were cramped, so they need to walk around... which is perfectly fine.... untill I looked closer.... one of the guys was holding a cigarette.... he looked like he was walking further from the pumps, so I didn't worry too much about it, but then when I looked up again.... THE FRICKEN KID'S NOSE WAS PRACTICALLY IN THE NOZZLE CUZ HE WAS CHECKING OUT THE NEW PUMPS WE RECENTLY INSTALLED!!! HE'S GOT A FRICKEN CIGARETTE HANGIN' OUT OF HIS MOUTH WHILE PEERING INTO A GAS NOZZLE!!!
I practically had to drag my jaw on the ground out there to tell him to get the *bleep* out of there with his cigarette, I don't feel like dying in an explosion today. The boss wasn't too happy with my potty mouth, but I was flippin' stunned.... I'm still absolutely floored when I think about how freakin' DUMB he was.
*still shakin' my head*

Nationally, How wide-spread is the enforcing of the "Clean Indoor Air Act" ? It's quite strictly enforced in CT. and NY. The small bar businesses can't afford to spend money on renovation's that would allow for the open well ventillated roof of a room provisioned as a designated smoking area

Here in Oklahoma we don't have it.. A few years ago there was talk of enforcing no-smoking in public places, then they said there would have to be a separate room with ventilation for smokers, then they said the owner of the establishment had to post a sign stating whether is was a non-smoking or smoking establishment, then nothing.....
In the Dallas area, as of a few years ago, it is non-smoking unless there is an area with ventilation; but I went to a bar in the Dallas area last year that allowed smoking everywhere. I'm not sure if they had a ventilation system for the entire bar or not. Also, on our way back to OK from TX we stopped at a restaurant that had a smoking & non-smoking area and the smoking area had two visible ventilation systems.

In Greeley they passed no smoking in bars.. So the bars in Evans are flourishing Its funny the non smokers are going there too because the non smoking bars are closed at 5 in the afternoon.... Another bar thats been here 50 years closed last summer (no smoking)... Its not helping karaoke here in any stretch of the imagination...
