Since each of us KJ's/DJ's is an ENTERTAINER hosting a PROFESSIONAL SHOW, how do you dress for the part?? Do you dress for a party--hawaiian shirts and maybe a hat, or go formal more like a lounge act or just wear your old work jeans and a T-shirt?
Myself, if I am going to be onstage, hosting or doing a show in a public place then I believe it's absolutely a key part of being an entertainer to show respect to the crowd and the show by dressing sharp.  I ALWAYS wear a flashy hawaiian shirt, nice dark slacks, dress shoes and when I sing I have my trademark blueshat and shades(Go look at my pic on Photo Gallery, Out On The Town).

So how do the rest of you dress for a show???

I do an impersonation show so its all kinds of different clothes. I even wear wig's I have about 5 wigs...

when im doing a K/J or D/J....yes I agree allways look like YOU are the one that must be the D/J or K/J dude...or dudette. I wear dark Dress pants and a Tux Shirt And Black Dress shoes. even tho walking thru the crowd some wisea$$ usually says "hey waiter I'll take a Martni Please"   I also have pic's in my album.

I try to dress for or with the crowd.. Weddings tie absolutely....Your outward appearance is part of a strangers first impression..Good grooming and demeanor is an absolute must when dealing with the public..

 I have considered getting some karaoke shirts or t-shirts with our logo on them but never persued it. Does anybody do this or know of a good company online?

KJs dressing is one thing, but when I went to a town and checked out their karaoke show at a nearby bar.  A couple walked in and sat down together, both had sequined vests with musical notes on the vest.    They weren't KJs, just enthusiasists.  one rotation they sung a song solo and the third rotation they did a duet.   And from what I heard they always sung the same songs.

Another guy I've seen has to put on his TCB sunglasses when he does the same two Elvis songs when he sings.

I usually dress trendy with jeans and heals for the bar.

If it's a wedding, anniversary ect.. I wear dress clothes.

I have a seperat coat I wear to the bar because what ever I wear always ends up reeking like smoke. So I keep the bar coat seperate from other clothes. I even stopped carrying leather purses because the leather would pick up the smoke aweful.

that's the greatest thing about the smoking by-law here...

as of recently, there is NO smoking in any public buildings..... that means.... there are no smoking in bars, restaurants, etc. so I can actually WEAR all my NICE clothes to the bars now without REEKING like smoke...
I have this one jacket..... more like a casual type blazer thing... I dunno.... anyways... it's really expensive, but fits like a DREAM and looks awesome with my jeans... BUT it's dry-clean only, and i SOOOOO do not dry-clean, so I could never wear it to any bars, but now I can!! YAY!!! doin' my happy dance!  :dancin:

not to mention the fact that now I can actually SING at karaoke without hackin' up a lung from all the second-hand smoke!

I dress to fit the bar/occasion.  It's super laid back up here.  A lot of times you see a whole crew just of the oil rigs still in their cover-alls and grimey.  Then you look around and see people dressed pretty trendy because they came out for karaoke.  For me it also depends on the day of the week.  I know my wed. show is going to be super busy so I tend to get a bit dressier.  Regardless though I won't go into a show wearing something like sweats.

If I'm DJ'ing a wedding or anniversary party or just any one time gig I wear a skirt or dress.

Actually, I never considered this as another advantage to the "Indoor clean-air" act. Yet I've had countless jacket's, and shirt's end up with ciggy burns, and holes in them during crowded bar conditions. More-so of course years back when heavier smoking was prevalent. I'm not sure, but I think if you were to compare a mid- 1970's Disco, or Blues/Jazz type Venue in the past,  to almost any bar 25 years later, the more recent venue's would've  experienced the decline in the amount of smoke, and intensity of smoking.  Just a guess based on what I experienced. Most of the places I frequented years back would be a thick cloud of smoke the moment you opened the door to the venue, Often like walking thru a really thick fog..  I think such conditions gradually and progressively tapered over the years, as smoking lessened, and people gradually started considering cigarette's and "second hand smoke" a problem.. Maybe air filtration technology advances helped with this over the years, not sure.

Regarding the topic,  How I dressed really did affect how I felt.. In my case I found it pretty amazing how just dressing nicely, would change my mood, and often boost my esteem...

I completely agree with this.  It's those nights when I'm feeling like crap, self esteem wise, that I get super dressed up and go all out.  I know I should do that every night but it's the nights I feel like crap when I go beyond the average trendy dress night.

For some reason,  throwing on a jacket, nice shirt, and decent pair of pant's really does wonders..... I'd even dust off one of the tie's and be feeling pretty good until somebody tells me, "The lapel's and pocket flaps on that jacket went out've style back in the 1960's, as did  the third button on that style jacket. The polyester vest you think matches the jacket (made by Levi) doesn't match, and went out've style early 1970's along with those "earthboots" you've got on... Oh, and guy's don't wear bobby socks like that anymore....also, button down hiphugger's (like those 32 inch pant's you're trying to fit your bloated 40 inch waist into) went out've style around the same time that really nice authentic vinyl waist coat went out've style, (not to be confused with the cheap leather imitations)

 Yeah, whatever. Professional  :shock:, only a few my friend, very few.

I wear what I want to wear. Sometimes a company shirt, sometimes nice "work" casual clothes.

...considering what some people wear in concert (ripped, faded jeans and a t shirt), I have to agree...it's just a bar...

I don't know about you guys, but the question comes up now, is it different for women?  I'm not a raging feminist, but I think guys can get away with wearing a t-shirt, jeans and cap more often then women.  If I went wearing no make-up and just combing my hair and wore a t-shirt and jeans, the bar owner would be like, "Are you serious?" Mind you, for women t-shirt is a vast explaination for tops.  With men, a t-shirt is a t-shirt, with women, is it a baby tee?  Is there print on the front?  Are the sleeves short?  Is the t-shirt fitted or loose?  I guess if some of those fall into the t-shirt category I guess I do wear a t-shirt and jeans 99% of the time.  I just think it's hard for women categorize what they wear because there are so many variations.  Getting dressed up for me might be what another woman considers laid back.  Who knows. . . .pictures anybody?  I'll get some pictures up sometime.

But.......But.......What do you wear when you are hosting Karaoke at a Nudist Camp?
Would you ever feel overdressed?

I don't know if it is a double standard, but I can't help but think that a cute female KJ wearing skimpy clothes would be the hottest karaoke in town regardless of her selection and system!!

I definitely think there is a double standard for dressing. The KJ before me who everyone loved was a long haired hill billy who wore old jeans and t-shirts. He had a wonderful personality though. Just like in real life people are judged on first appearance and guys can get away with dressing down more.

I do have a strong guy following, partly because it is a blue color bar, partly probably  because I am a girl. I try to go for classy not slutty. If I'm in a sweatshirt and jeans or dressed up and doesn't seem to affect my tips. If I'm showing more skin it just causes comments and sometimes unwanted attention. Again it doesn't effect my tips. I asked one of the bartenders one time if she made more tips depending on what she wore because the guys were giving her a hard time about her low cut blouse. She said no. I think men will treat you how you portray yourself.
If you dress classy people will respect you more and will take your show more seriously. I've had to tell guys over the mic that - not a strip club.
