A Happy New Year to All of You! I have a question about MTU Hoster. I know that they have a discussion group, but often times I get faster responses from you guys than over there...

I've been using Hoster for about 6 months... but lately I've noticed that some of the music, when I play it back is distorted. Has anyone had that happen? I know that it is not that the preamp or amplifier are clipping... the playback itself sounds distorted... like if it was overloaded... Strange, since I thought that digital files would not exhibit that sort of distortion. It happens with about 1/3 of my music...

I wonder if I'll have to re-rip the music that is exhibiting this problem...

I had done a search at MTU, but didn't find anything... I'll also post over there...

Thanks,

That sounds more like a computer (volume turned up too high on sound card to mixer) or audio issue to me.  Never heard of this particular problem.

Also might check your resources.. When resources are low it causes audio drops pops etc...

Do disc cleanup etc   you can check by doing cntrl alt del....

Also a new one from microsoft

Microsoft Description/

Here is a quick fix...

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
3. On the Themes tab of the Display Properties dialog box, click Windows Classic in the Theme list.
4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

A few years ago when we were running slower computers we actually thought we had speakers going bad (pops) It was just running low on resources....

I've been using Hoster now for over three years.  In some of the previous versions, there were some audio drop issues.  Those have been corrected as of late.  You said it happens on about a 1/3 of your songs.  My first question would be "Does it happen everytime with the same songs?"  If it's consistant, then I would say you need to re-rip at maybe a slower speed.  If it doesn't happen everytime with the same songs, then I would say it's a resource issue, or volume set to high as Lonman stated.

I have been using Hoster for over 3 years, and have not had this problem. It sounds more hardware/system related than software. Possibly a preamp going south overloading.

Hmmm... Thanks for all the responses... @ MTU... they said they haven't had any reports of this occurring.

I'll add some more information... I run the audio through an Echo DJ Card... I also failed to mention... that I'm running PCDJ Blue at the same time... well... not both playing at the same time, but... I leave it open in the background... maybe it is a computer resource issue... I will try running Hoster with and without PCDJ open... I'm running the laptop with 512 MB of RAM...

Again, thanks for the input...

Take care,

Frank,
Another suggestion and you may already be doing this; but run your video/graphics at the lowest possible setting.  It doesn't take much to show karaoke graphics and this is much easier on your resources.  Also if fininacially possible I would recomend 1 gig of memory.  I haven't seen many programs that run good on just what they say is needed.

I did have a problem once with distortion but it was on all songs. It was a sound card software problem. I un-intsalled and re-installed the software and it sloved the problem.

You said 1/3rd of your songs have this problem. Were they all imported at the same time? What compression settings did you use? Did you use the same burner to import them as the others?

My reasoning here is that the other 2/3rds of your songs are playing just fine so perhaps it is not a hardware problem. I do not think it is a Hoster Software problem though.

I would be very curious as to your compression settings for the songs affected.

Thanks again for your responses... My number of 1/3 of the songs distorting is an estimate. I did notice that it is happening with songs ripped from CDGs of all brands...  from Sound Choice, Chartbuster, etc... All have been ripped at the same compression level... I don't recall the number and I'm at work, so I can't check right now... They have all been ripped with the same Plextor drive.

This weekend I don't have a gig, so I will check the system with different settings, not running PCDJ in the background and will fiddle with the graphic settings too. Thanks for the suggestions. If I can reproduce the distortion, I will test to see how consistently it happens, because the truth is that I noticed it in the middle of a gig and couldn't concentrate as much on the variables.

Thanks!

Some cd's are louder dynamicaly than others, find one that is distorted, and try reducing the volume of the computer. you may be overloading the input of the mixer.  I don't use any of the importing enhancements in hoster, the compression, and such. Most all of my library was imported at 192k......... I don't refer to this as compression, as it is actually the bitrate. in the import tools, you have compression, and levelizing. and a few other things, that I have never used.

I too have never used Nomalization feature. All of my songs are imported at
128k bitrate.
