Babs,

what I tell them is "Sure, but I'll do it on my time... and frankly, I'm kinda busy. If you want to fill out the slip like you're supposed to, you will be assured a good spot in the rotation. But since I'll be doing your job for you, it may take awhile... soon as I get a break." (look down at your rotation) "But I wouldn't hold my breath on that happening too soon. AND I might forget... lot of things on my mind!"

They usually get the hint!

Also, while this may not be what you want to hear... 20,000 songs is a TON... if you go thru and pull out all the inferior dupes, that will reduce it a lot, and you can probably print them in dual column... with a larger font!

Got examples on my songbooks on my site!

I'm happy to say I have no duplicates. I do make seperate books for "by artist" and "by title". I thought of pulling out the x-mas, christian, childrens and christian songs and put them in a seperate book though. I worked very hard on having only good quality songs with no duplicates. Quite a task.

Great suggestions about what to tell people. I think I will use the I'm really busy, when I get a minute I can look up the song. A nice add on would be to tell them if I forget to remind me, so they understand it isn't a priority for me. I think I try to be to nice sometimes. I hate their reaction when I tell them I'm to busy can they do it.

Babs, I love the little dancing kitties on your sig!  Sometimes when I'm listening to a song and looking at this board (like right now I'm listening to "Surrender" by Cheap Trick), the kitties move in rhythm to the song!   :dancin:

That's great!  My son would love that!  He's almost 8 and he also loves emoticons, or "happy guys" as he calls them!   :hi5:  :handshake:  :dancin:  :oh yeah:  :worship:

I'm waiting for your site to come up--so far I'm just seeing a blank space!  I don't know what state you are in (I am in MO), so I don't know if I'd get to go to your karaoke place, but at least it will give me more ideas of what songs are out there.

As for me--I'm debating about whether to have them keep lists for me or not.  I might do that at the bowling alley I usually go to--but even there, I'm more of a semi-regular than a regular.  Plus, sometimes I've picked out songs that the KJ didn't know, although they had them.  So if they don't know a song on my list, they wouldn't know when to fit it into the show.  I probably will just stick to filling out slips with whatever song I feel like singing at a particular time.    I do repeat songs occasionally, but I'm trying not to overdo any of them.

And the Knightshow site is STILL not downloaded yet--arrrrrrrgh...  :(

during the night i will pick songs for people to sing...NOT from their slips they hand in...or the regulars....We call it mystery karaoke...Ain't nothing better than a big ol cowboy singing Marilyn Monroes "Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend"!!! :hi5:  :oh yeah:

I saw some people doing "karaoke roulette" once.  I think they drew song titles out of a hat.  So there was this big beefy football-player-looking guy singing "Like a Virgin"!   LOL

I've never tried mystery karaoke (or whatever you want to call it) myself.  (With my luck, I'd probably get some song I'd never even heard before!  LOL!)  But as I've said before, I often like to pick unusual songs.  And I often like to dance and be sexy while I'm singing.  Last night a guy told me I was the first person he'd heard who sang "16 Tons" and made it sound hot!!!!  :oh yeah:  I also did a rather, uh, unorthodox version of "Like a Rolling Stone".  Let's just say I didn't sound anything at all like Bob Dylan.  (Many people would say this is a good thing.   LOL )  Anyway, I'm not sure how it would have looked or sounded if it had been recorded--pretty crazy, I'm sure!--but people seemed to like it.  And most importantly, I was having FUN!!!!!!!!!  :dancin:  :worship:

(BTW, I know the  :worship: icon says "worship", but I use it to mean "taking a bow".  That's what it looks like to me.)

Thanks!  I will try it later.  I'm gonna have to leave pretty soon.  I have no computer (yet)--I'm at a copy place, and my mother-in-law is watching my son.  She's gonna bring him back to my house in about a half hour, and she'll probably throw a hissy fit if I'm not there.  (She's a big help with the kid, but she is the classic Ernie K. Doe mother-in-law, if you know what I mean!  LOL )

I KJ at the same bar 3 nights a week. I keep a list for my singers of their regular songs. This has made my life much easier and the patrons love it. When I see them in the bar I pull their slip and add them to the rotation. They don't have to ask me. The great thing is 90% of them let me pick their song. I can control the night so people have fun. Starting with mellower songs and saving the rocking songs for the meat of the night, like a dj. They trust me so much with song choice most will try a new song I suggest. Does anyone else use this practice?

Here's a benfit of RoxBox(which I use) & CompuHost: I don't have to keep it in a box, My computer keeps it for me.

Thought I'd add my 2 cents from the perspective of a singer.

I sing regularly for two different KJs, in a relatively small bar.  The longest the que ever gets is maybe 10 singers.

One KJ has older equipment.  He saves my slips.  It was a huge compliment the first time he laid them in front of me.  But there is also a practical advantage.  Early on a slow evening he and I might be the only two singers.  With the slips in front of me, I can sit back and enjoy the music and the crowd between songs instead of digging through the book for the next song.

A second KJ has three systems as he may be covering as many as three gigs the same night.  One is computerized using Compuhost.  That's really nice given all my songs are stored under my name.  At the beginning of the night I usually give him a list of my first four songs.  He just ques them up.  Then I update him in batches.

His other two systems are CD juke boxes that require the numbers be punched in.  He was using one of those systems Saturday night.  I have an iPod with the original artist versions of all the songs I have sung.  When I'm on the treadmill I listen to the iPod and practice singing my newer songs as a duet with the original artist.  All of those songs are in a iTunes directory called Karaoke.  With iTunes you can print out a list of all the songs in a directory.  So Saturday night I walked in with my song list.  It took me about 5 minutes to look up the numbers in the book and then I handed him the list and told him to play the songs that fit in with his flow in the order he wanted them.

It was another slow night at first and he and I were singing every other song for a while.  We started kidding each other about singing songs outside the box.  At one point we had a competition going and ran off 8 straight Beach Boys songs, four of which neither of us had sung before.  Neither of us has the vocal highs to hit the top on most Beach Boys songs so we had a lot of fun teasing and challenging each other and remarking on how badly each of us had murdered various songs.  Near the end of the competition, we were asking the crowd for a thumbs up or thumbs down on the most recent song.  Early in the evening this bar has an older crowd and they were trying to sing along.  Everyone seemed to be having a good time.

The evolution of a singer is an interesting process.  I started out with about 5 songs.  I got sort of upset if someone did one of my songs before I got to as it limited my time behind the mike that evening.  Now I'm up to 32 songs and adding 2-3 per week.  If someone does one of my songs, its not a big deal as I'll never get through the list anyway.  I also try to sing 1-2 songs that I've never sung before.

Sorry for the long post, but I've been bitten fairly hard by the Karaoke bug since my divorce 6 months ago and this is my first post.  I have to admit, Karaoke has really helped me through the last six months.  I've made many new friends and have had a blast in the process.

Tom

I have always kept my own list in my purse.  Recently the KJ at my fav bar bought a very large CD case and labeled each pocket with a singers name and started placing the slips for us in our own pocket.  Some people let him pick and others just enjoy recycling the paper.  It pretty cool.  He only does this with people that have been going there for years, like myself.  The newbee's that show up just go in the trash.
