I'm looking for a reasonable component karaoke player to use in my home.  We're huge fans of Karaoke, but we've never put anything together in our own house.  I'm not looking for everything, just some basics that will cover our needs:

o Separate volume control for each of two mics, without purchasing a mixer.
o Digital key change, because otherwise I'd embarass myself too much.
o Support for a large library of English music out there.  AFAICT, this means CDG.

After a lot of looking and tons of great info here, I learned that the RSQ/JVC stuff is pretty much the standard.  While we don't need the RSQ MV-333, the RSQ NEO-E500 looks rather nice at the price, with the plus of doing DVDs.  It's a brand everyone seems to like, and it covers all the other features, I think.  The literature text from RSQ is not great, and while it seems obvious that it plays CDG, it isn't stated explicitly.

So I call Ace Karaoke (just cause Yahoo! shopping pulls them up first) to ask them.  They say, of course, that it does CDG.  But then they say "Why that one?" in a tone of, I don't know, disbelief?  So I ask why they are surprised I'd choose it.  The representitive tells me that everyone is using Super-CDG, and that they are surprised I'd consider anything that doesn't play Super-CDG.

Now, I knew already that Super-CDG means CAVS.  I had nothing against CAVS at that point, I'd just not seen the name nearly as much as RSQ.  It got me wondering.  I looked, and the CAVS DVD-203G is pretty equivalent to the NEO-E500.  The only difference is Super-CDG vs NEO-G as the enhanced format.  I also saw that some folks here on the forum are not into CAVS receivers.  But it seems that, in general, both machines will be pretty reliable and capable, at the same price.

So here's my question:  Is the representative at Ace Karaoke right?  For a home user who wants a large song catalog, is Super-CDG the way the wind is blowing?  Stuff like Jazz standards, older songs, maybe some brand-new stuff.  Does the "new" format matter, or is CDG still good enough for anyone?

supercdg is NOT the way the wind is blowing... in fact, the word is that many of the discs that are out there were ones without the manufacturer's approval. Now there's no proof of that, but the fact that many of the regular manus aren't supporting it means to me, it's not the way to go!

the 222 machine is fine for home and pro use...

most of us don't use the mic inserts on the players... we use outside mixers.

Super CDG just means you'll get a ton of songs on 1 disc.  Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe the quality of the music is any better.
You'll find a wider and better selection on regular CDG's.
So I would look at a player that will play all  three formats CDG/SUPER CDG / DVD
this will give you some options.  Look for a player with digital key control and try to stock with RSQ/JVC is possible (just my suggestion )

The JVC XL-SV22 (or RSQ MV-222, right?) looks like a great machine, the same as the 3-tray without the extra trays.  However, they don't seem to be available anymore, at least from any source I can find.  Does anyone have an opinion on where to go next?  Either of the machines mentioned in the tiltle?
