Most of the times we have fights it's the regulars. It isn't as scary when you know who the people are and they are no threat to you.
There is some comfort knowing the regulars would defend me at the drop of a hat if anything serious happened.
I've learned to control my area - if I have an obvious harmless stumbling drunk singing I have a couple regulars watch that the speakers don't get knocked over. If I feel like I can't control them I don't let them sing.

I have done some rough bars including one at Sturgiss.. Now I'm lucky cuz my regular gig is at VFW Post 2121 which I am a member. If you are doing a rough bar with rowdies I would tell the owner mgr im not setting up my system or jeopardizing my help without security... I have been in positions where I had the authority to 86 anyone at my discretion. If worse comes to worse and the mgr will not cooperate I would inform them I do have a cell phone at the first sign of trouble I will dial 911.... No bar wants the cops showing up....You dont have to put up with that crapp.....

[font=Comic Sans MS] Fortunately we've never done a bar so rough we thought we needed security (knock on wood) but if we ever do, or if we get in an uncomfortable position, the threat to call 911 is a fantastic idea!
Of course trouble has broken out at the bars during our years of hosting but fortunately, like in Melly's experience, we have a great group of regulars who have each others' backs...

One night last year we had a few guys (not regulars) who wanted to
pick a fight all night. I'm sure you know the type. Well, the bartender was able to get them out of the bar, but made the mistake of escorting them to the door. She was pulled outside by one of the guys and thrown to the ground. Everyone ran towards the door. I yelled over the mic I was calling the cops. Thank god she was strong and he was drunk. She was able to woop his butt. This gal was 5'8" and looked like a model. She was a bit bruized the next day.
I complained to the bar owner that he can't leave 2 woman to fend for themselves.(that would be me and the bartender)
He made sure he was there after that for most of the busy nights and hired a male bartender for Saturdays. And just recently I was given a bouncer for Firday nights. He is lame, but better than nothing.
The bar owner is under the wrong impression that the regulars will defend us. Usually the first thing out of his mouth when he's been told there was trouble is, where were my regulars when it was happening. Yes for the most part they will defend me, but it isn't there place. They are there to have a good time not to get in a fight for me.

They are there to have a good time not to get in a fight for me. having REGULARS be your bouncers and protectors is asking for trouble, as is the procedure of having a small person escort someone to the door... male or female! You ask them to leave, and if they don't, say that you're going to call the cops!
Every time there's a fight, there's the potential that the cops will have had enough and will shut something down! And just because I and others may know how to defend ourselves doesn't mean that a fight is the way to do it. Granted, my big butt looks a bit more impressive than a smaller guy or gal... and I have the luxury of asking someone nicely to leave as opposed to getting in their face. In fact, that's the LAST thing you should be doing with an obnoxious and obstinant drunk!

I couldn't help it--your comment just sounded funny, and it sounded like it deserved a comment in return...

I don't take breaks. I wait for a song to be just over 3 minutes and I know I have time. Although I am sick of "Paradise by the Dashboard" I do have a regular that loves to sing it and she knows that some nights I am incredibly thankful to have the 7+ minutes. Last night though I had someone start talking to me when I walked in the bathroom and I just said to her, "In no way do I want to be rude but ya mind talking to me while I pee cause I've got about 2 minutes and 30 seconds left." She laughed. Normally I just talk to them and wait for the next 3+ minute song. I've actually had people follow me to the bathroom and try to hand me their request slip under the stall!

I'm not a kj but our host I have been friends now a year or so .if she needs it a few of us regulars get it , her breaks which gives the excuse to dance.
I don't care if she takes any breaks I'm easy to please :D I had been bless that she helped me over come my stagefright (still get it everytime I do my first song.)
just a regular who appreciates the hard work it takes to make us singers want to come back

Just found this post on a search for a TOTALLY different subject.... Anyways, thought I would add my experiences ...
I run the karaoke show at a bar that does karaoke every night ...all night. They own their own gear (super old and unreliable). I get there at 7pm...usually don't get outta there til 3 or 4am. I get paid hourly. I usually start the show between 8 and 9, depending on how many people we have. So figure I generally run a 7-8 hour long show. So, I take as many breaks as I need to. The bar actually WANTS me to take breaks and play dance music to get people hot and sweaty...and therefore buy more drinks. So usually after every rotation (generally 20-30 singers, depending on the night) I play 3 or 4 dance songs. I do have my fiance helping me out, so it isn't really a big deal anyways...
Now an interesting thing in my KJing experience... I initially got hired on and worked at this bar as a bouncer, but they needed a new KJ, and I was already planning on getting my own gig going, so I took this on for experience. So basically, they get a two for one deal, because I still function as a bouncer while I am KJing if anything really goes down (which it does OFTEN) If/when something goes down, the fiance takes the primary KJ role, and I go take care of business. Just Sunday night I had to kick somebody out, he tried to take a swing at me(bad move), and I had to put his head to bed. (Was out cold for about 2 minutes and broke his nose) Kinda felt bad afterwards, but these people gotta realize that being drunk does not excuse you for your behavior... People don't make too much of a stink to me about waiting for their turn in the rotation. LOL
Seriously, it is hard to keep enthused about a show for the length that we do it...but we somehow manage...we actually have a growing following who pledge to follow us wherever we go, so it's all good....

We are a two person operation ... so breaks are no problem. We NEVER drink anything alcholic during our shows... but if we need water/soda/popcorn refills... one of the club's security staff/bouncers always checks with us ... and takes care of us. In both of the rooms that we have weekly shows.... WE make the calls regarding what is effecting the show. If someone is heckling the singer, me, the DJ, or another patron .... or is "over the limit" drinks wise ... all I have to do is let the club security know that I need someone removed. We also have a roadie ... who attends the show ... 6' 4" - 245.... we call him "the Oxxx". On the rare occasion when a fight might start... we have a policy in place. He takes the left side of the stage (protects gear) .. the DJ immediately takes the right side ... and I stay outta the way and protect the gear that is on the stage (players, mixers, mics, discs...etc). Security usually has things under control VERY quickly.
REGULARS do feel really loyal .. and will try to help .... but like Matt has said, we discourage them from getting involved.
One night.. a very intoxicated young lady decided that she'd waited long enough ..... & got on the stage during another singer's song. I immediately got to her.... and she proceded to get in my face.... and call me names using words even *I* had never heard before ( ). One of our regular singers jumped up and tried to get involved. I just put up a hand ... said ... "get me security please" ... and continued to keep the drunk gal away from the performing singer. It seemed like a long time .. but it really only took about 1 minute before security literally picked her up & carried her outta the club. Afterwards, I thanked the singer that had jumped to my aide ... but explained that its better to let club security do their jobs, rather than have an innocent singer become involved.
I guess we are pretty lucky ... in all the years we've been doing this (13) .. I can honestly say I recall only about 4 times when its been necessary to go into "emergency" mode ... or have someone removed from a club/bar.
From the sound of it ... (POOR MELLY and BABS!!!) ... I guess I should be thanking my lucky stars that I haven't "seen stars".....
BTW.... the DEPENDS comment -------> LOL
& ..... do we have FUN ? ..... We have a blast ... STILL .... :dancin:

That sounds like the ideal club. I hope someday I can work a place like that.
I can't imagine not dealing with the alcohol impaired on a nightly basis.
I'm trying to enforce some new rules now. I'm hoping if I make things a little stricter
I won't have as many problems. My worry is dealing with people who won't like change. I figure after a while they will get used to it and not complain.
