Oh boy - I've got the flu. I had to get a fill in for my karaoke gigs to nights in a row.
I haven't missed a night in 2 years.
OK here's my question - I am going into work Friday no matter what. I usually drink
coffee and water. I don't buy fancy throat spays. What is the best liquid to drink to sooth my throat? Does lemon do anything?

it does, but it's HARSH on your throat.
ANY citrus drink will be that way. Same with soda... I personally stick to halls throat losenges!

Also remember that the coffee is dehydrating. So if you do need it, increase your water intake accordingly. I like the zinc lozenges, but if you are that sick, you do what you need to do to get yourself feeling better, how your voice sounds can't be the priority. Not sure it's even a good idea to be sharing a microphone assuming you have something known to be extremely contageous either. Personally the fact that so many of these retail outfits push employee's, (especially food establishments) to come to work when coughing, congested, and pretty sick bugs the %&*$ out've me. Yet... Oh Well...

I probably won't sing at all Friday - I have no voice today. Thank you for your advice though.

The owner of the bar I work for is such a jerk! Like I said I haven't missed a day
there in 2 years. I even came in after I had surgery and sat in a chair. When I called to tell him I had to send in a replacement. He said I was letting a lot of people down.
He can jump off a cliff!

Yeah, He probably perceives things from the perspective of a huge friday night bar revenue-wise, alot of school kids are home. Friends and family meet and go out, etc. I suppose that's a huge night for many bars. Sometimes you have to look out for number one. I had to go into work in the past a few times with a fever of 103. Noone should have to do that IMHO.. Judgement isn't that great when you are genuinely sick like that.(to say the least)

It is amazing how a company will tell you how we are all a big family. Translation we need you to work your a$$ off for us with no regard for your health or own real family, so work sick, work late - oh yeah for free. And when you need us we're your employer.
The only reason I stay where I'm at is the people. I could tell you tons of stories about how lame the owner is. I was just starting to think he was an alright guy again because he finally got me a bouncer for Firday nights. Now I know he was just covering his own butt because the patrons were trying to protect me.
OK I'm done whining - thanks for listening

It is a amazing to me how cold managers can be to people. Recently I knew a person who called in one day sick and they required a doctor's excuse which cost $500 for a visit to the ER to miss one days work. Another person missed a days work and because of the bad economy here, they were fired.
There are some viscous germs floating about and I try to limit my contact with children as much as possible. I am probably the Uncle Scrooge of music land. I would have been the mean old man in the deserted house on the corner where the children would play and he would come out and say "play somewhere else." He was the one that was always killed by the creepy monster in Stephen King books or horror. I guess my philosophy has always when, when we finally cure death and old age, we can be the children.
I have always thought of kids as walking petri plates. They carry hundreds of germs and each day in school pass them with a vengeance. Same deal in bars. Because I was related to a person who worked in a bar, every week I used to get "something".
Perhaps I will wind up like a Michael Jackson musician or Howard Hughes with gloves and a mask and will not shake hands with anyone.
We live in times when virulent hentaviruses and avian may someday restructure your world. Be sure to check out my sub walking amoung the dead an original.
It wasn't the radiation that did it - it was the flu.

Yep. I seem to get a flu like illness after every karaoke night too. Or maybe it's not the karaoke night, but the hundreds of people I'm mingling with in those shopping malls where I deliver the goods that so many people take for granted? Everybody hates truck drivers, especially at the holidays. Oh well, ignorance breeds more ignorance and so comes a new generation of breeders....
Makes you wonder about the karaoke thing though. The germs transmitted from handling the microphone, or holding the mic too close. I hope you can't get an STD from holding a mic. Alot of people don't wash their hands after using the restroom, especially at a bar. Or after kissing their herpes infected partner or ????
I just burned myself.....what was I just saying about ignorance? DOOOOOOH!!
Oh, most importantly, Hope you get well soon and Merry Christmas.

I'm finally feeling better today. I made it through last nights gig. I had a wonderful time. Some of the patrons brought me presents and the tips were plenty. I was running on pure adrenalin. I ignored the bar owner I hope he feels like crap being such an insensitive jerk. The regulars were so nice asking if I felt better and do I need anything. It feels good to at least be appreciated by them. By the end of the night i had no voice, but had a great time.

i know this reply is late, but for anyone still reading this, a great soothing drink for your throat is aloe vera juice, you can get it at any pharmacy, its very expensive, but you only need a little bit, or you can even dilute it with water.
