I see nothing wrong with tipping. We are in a land of opportunity and around here the KJs are under appreciated- we get new "KJs" who underbid and screw the professional KJs, so I had to get a real job (just kidding!) I started out as  a singer and fell in love with it (karaoke) over the past ten years I believe my experience speaks volumes. So if you have a tip jar and its working more power to you.

KJ's like cows, are easy to tip as long as you sneak up on them quietly.

Is this a new fad?....Cow tipping went out of fashion years ago.

Is this something I need to worry about? Is it likely someone is going to sneak up on me next gig and tip me over?....Man, I sure hope not! LMAO

If they wait long enuff, i usually fall over by myself.

Susie, I LOVE your signature!  Such a cute slogan!

Actually, I don't sing in the shower very often--I usually take baths, and I like to read in the tub.  I sing in the car sometimes, but then there are other times I'd just rather hear myself think.  :)

(edited to say:  Sorry about the double-double posting-posting--I don't know how to delete this)

[font=Comic Sans MS]Laura,

Thanks!  I love the slogan too!  It's on our shirts, etc.  We did a commercial that aired as people were coming home from the bar and it displayed our motto line by line with voice over... It caught some attention as people were wondering what in the heck the commercial was about!!

I sing my absolute best in the shower!!  I found the corner of the shower has the best acoustics!  LOL

I don't care for baths much.  We bought this house 3 years ago & the master bath  has those water jets, it's been used 3 times, once by our dogsitter!

Susie :)

I redirect tip offerors to the bartenders.  At the end of the night if someone tips or buys a drink for having a good time, fine.  For DJ work, I have less difficulty accepting tips (no tip jar though).

I don't know why you would share any tips to the wait staff/bartenders, do they share their tips with you, afterall you bring the crowd in.  Most times they will make way more in tips than you will earn doing your show.

Totally agree.  I tip the barstaff as I would as a customer.  I am constantly announcing to take care of the bar staff, the few bucks (if any) that come to me is not hurting them in any way.

to that end, i would have to agree with timberlea and lonman, but i have redirected in the past.  as amatter of recollection, just a couple of weeks ago, someone wanted me to play a bit later than i was suppose to which meant the bartender had to stay a little later.  i announced that i would play "by the minute" as long as was legal, but that the patrons would have to tip the bartender a dollar for every mintue they wanted me to stay.  barkeep was happy, patrons were happy and i was having fun so i was happy!

The tip offers are usually bribes to me.  So, I don't accept them.  Never have.  The bartenders work for tips, I don't.  This is just my simple approach.

I think it is a nice jesture for Marty to give up his tips. Personally I'd rather hand them to the bartender myself at the end of the night, so the bartender can appreciate where they came from.

Sometimes people want to buy you drinks because they appreciate what you do for them. I don't drink and that is why I think people started wanting to tip me instead. I don't take bribes, but will stay later if offered money by the patrons. The bar owner only pays me until 2am. but the bar is open until 3am. I think he does this on purpose knowing people will bug me to stay. He'll even tell them to tip me if they want me to stay.

How many of you don't take tips, but will take a free drink? And do you think there is
a difference or is that a tip too?

could be a 'fine line' there.  kinda depends on how they are given and how they are received.  Personally, I usually drink water or coffee, so not many offer drinks.  Also depends on where you are.  If I am at a private party, and the host offers a drink, I will take it and enjoy it.  Other than that, I normally feel that I am there as a professional.

I am mostly doing private parties, and as such, tipping has not come up much.  I have however been asked to stay later than the scheduled times, and folks have 'passed the hat' for money to get me to stay.  That usually ends up being more than what I would have charged for the extra hour, so, in a way it a big tip.  I also take it to mean that I must have done something right, and am making them enjoy themselves so much.  I most often have stayed, but only after making sure it was alright with the host and/or the establishment we are at.

oh i definitely accept a beer (again as long as they know it's not going to move them up in the rotation)  my bar sells beer adn setups so alot of folks bring their own bottles and offer up shots.  i try to stay away from those.

It's only a bribe if you act on it as a bribe.  Accept the tip and do nothing special for them, ie bump them up.  If they come back another time and tip you again then you can be positive it wasn't a bribe. As for bartenders, most make a hell of lot more in tips than most hosts do in a night.

But what I would do in such a situation is say to the person "I'm terribly sorry, but I run a straight rotation. If you have a message for your wife, then you can say it when your turn comes up..."

Or you can sing it for her at home, lol!   LOL

As a singer, I've been to a place in NYC where I was flat out told that every song was at least a buck.  Been there a while, drinking $6 dollar buds with my gf, tipping every song and every drink, and then kept getting skipped anyway.  One guy sang prob 3/4 times between mine.  That type of thing is not a pleasant experience.  A legit rotation is the best way to go.

I just had this happen -

A guy comes up and hands me a five dollar bill - He says here is a little bribe to get me in sooner

I said I don't take bribes - We are all like family here and it isn't fair for the people waiting - But I'll do the best I can and reached to give back the money

He put it in my tip jar and said I like that keep up the good work
