Just curious from others. I just hit my shortest time frame. Got a call about 3:30pm asking if I could KJ/DJ a private party at a restuarant. The restuarant/bar will be closing and is a private Christmas party for the owner, employees, and families. The real shock came when they asked me to do it tomorrow night!!! Talk about planning!!!
They said they had been planning the party for a couple of months, but forgot about having any kind of music or entertainment. I agreed, and gave them my prices, but darn, I should have jacked it up for short notice.......
How much of a notice (or lack of) have others had?
This was the opposite of a call I got last week wanting to book a private party for the middle of next June.....

I've been called by a company that literally wanted me to come down right then... and set up.
And for $100!
I laughed in their face!

True story.....last saturday......TWO HOURS. I got a call from a lady who has a pool in her house....Christmas Family Pool Party. The original KJ got in an accident enroute (he's ok...just shaken a little) and they had gotten my card at a gig two weeks earlier. Just so happened that this was in my home town and travelling wasn't an issue ( just the time frame). So they agreed to pay me for the short notice and my "revamping" my schedule.....5 hours....$800.00.......Merry Christmas....Ho HO Ho!!!!
I just LOVE this time of the year,
Donny "B"

About 3 hours....It was the yearly Quail Unlimited dinner nearby. They admitted it was an oversite on their part....They had completely forgotten to consider entertainment and also failed to line up a guest speaker. I said "NO!" Never gave them a chance to offer $$.
So I guess all they did was eat and then stand around and look at each other for a couple of hours.
I bet that was an interesting dinner!

No notice - A friend of mine was DJ'ing a wedding reception and the couple decided they wanted Karaoke - they paid $400 for 2 hours and that was 5 years ago.

This summer I was asked to do a fill-in karaoke show for a night. I got the call in the early afternoon. At about 5:30 p.m., I just finished loading my van and came back inside to cleanup/change. There was a message on my answering machine from a local banquet hall asking if I could zip over and do a wedding reception (that was starting at 6 p.m.!). Apparently the DJ and client did not communicate well and there was no DJ there. Since I was already committed, I couldn't do it (though I would have made 4X the $, ouch!). I've worked that venue many times and I found out later that they were able to get a DJ in and playing shortly past 8 p.m., just in time for the wedding dance after dinner.

Until this last Friday I did not have a good story to post about on this thread.
One of my regular Fri-Sat nite gigs decided to cancel karaoke for the weekend due to some problems with their roof and the way Christmas was situated this year. They felt that they would not have their normal crowd.
I was out Christmas shopping at the mall Friday night about 9:30pm and I rec'd a call from the bar owner saying that they had about 50 customers from the local neighborhood and they took up a collection and came up with $250 (my normal deal was $175) and wanted karaoke really bad. Would I be willing to come in and do a show.
I thought to myself....hmm 30 min to home pick up equipment, 30 min to bar, 15min setup I could be there and setup by 10:45 to 11pm, bar closes at 1:30.....hmmm
$250!!! What was there to think about, of course I would!
I made decent money, the bar had it's largest gross sales total since they opened and I ended up making another $50 in tips and had a blast. Turns out these folks were from a local area TV station and I ended up booking a couple of parties with them in 2006.
Sometimes short notice can be a really good thing!

As long as I'm not occupied anywhere else and the pay is good, why not. They call and I tell them how long it will take to get my equipment to the venue and set up.

I got a call from my eye doctor on a Friday afternoon at 3:00pm wanting me to play her class reunion on Saturday night. I tacked on an extra $100 for short notice and did the gig. Everyone had such a great time that she tacked on another $100.
