Hello,
I'm looking to buy my friend sometype of Karaoke for Christmas. He likes to sing so I thought it might be cool. I know nothing about Karaoke. When I looked at some sites they showed components and full systems as well as software packages. I don't understand what the differences are. I'm looking to spend about $200 but will go up to $400 if there is something really good.
My friend has a big 65" TV with a great audio system. So I don't need to get speakers or a monitor. He also has a laptop with wireless internet. I'm not sure if that helps. But given that info what would you suggest I buy?

depends...
I hate to be so vague, but you might end up spending money for something that he doesn't have, or money for something that your friend DOES have.
unless he's got a half height plextor drive in his pc, or an external plextor chances are his laptop won't read the cdg discs, and you can convert them for the laptop to be used.
My personal recommendation? Get the software, and leave the hardware up to him with his great sound system.
SC has some really good packs for sale, and karaoke.com has some discs on sale... weekly and monthly sales. As always, read the feedback. Some of the "lesser known brands" can be very disappointing. There's a thread somewhere on this site where many of us were ranking the various karaoke cd+g manufacturers!

Knightshow - excellent idea
Just buy the guy some song discs and then give him a gift cerificate to a place where he can pick out what home system he wants.

why not buy the new packs that has the MTU hoster type program already in it. Chances are they don't require the plextor drive to read the songs.

Hmmm...does this guy have a karaoke player already?? If he is uber hardcore about his karaoke then he probably already has a player, and I'd look at spending your whole budget on a good disc set or two (check out karaoke.com and their "SONG PACKS" section. Again, if he is pretty hardcore, I'd stick to the higher quality disc packs, like maybe one of the chartbuster essential packs ($250). If you know he is particularly into country or rock or a certain genre, they also make plenty of sets that cater to particular genres of music.
If this guy is a more casual karaoke guy, which I suspect from your post he is, you may need to buy a player as well. Quite frankly, for the casual home karaoke guy, pretty much anything will do the job. Visit your local Wal-Mart and you can get a player for about $75-100. Just make sure that the player has RCA audio outs so that your friend can plug it into his existing stereo system. Also, if he is a casual karoake singer then check out the cheaper disc sets on karaoke.com. I know plenty of home karaoke singers that are perfectly content with the Sweet Georgia Brown set (about 1000 songs, $112), Karaoke Hits (540 songs, $70), or Backstage. These discs are not "professional quality" but are perfectly good enough to have a great time singing with friends at home and seem to fit into your budget quite nicely!!
Hope that helps!!
