I'm not sure how to say this without coming across and an egotistical idiot, butt I'll give it a try.  We have a number of singers in our area that have only a few songs that they are comfortable singing.  I've been told on numerous occasions by different individuals to get up and sing these same songs because I can do a much better job.  However, I feel that I should leave theses songs alone, especially when the other singer or singers are present.  Thanks to our good Lord I able to sing a variety of songs.

I've seen a few of these individuals get up and sing a couple of there songs and then have a really good singer get up and sing the same song/songs, which results in the mediocre singer being to embarrassed to again.  These individuals may not be karaoke nut like some of us, but the way I figure it I'm not going to be the one that rains on there parade.  Anyone else feel this way?

From my understanding.... as a general rule and to be 'considerate' of other singer, it's not 'cool' to sing the same song somone else has already sung that night. If you want to sing one of the songs the other singers 'monopolize', put it as first choice on your slip and offer a second choice if you have that option.

If you come up in the rotation first, go ahead and sing your song. They can pick another. If they come up first, you have a second option.

We even try to follow that rule here, and people try not to post the same song as someone else on the same day. Happy singing. :)

Being a KJ I try to steer away from this happening. Most of the regulars are pretty good about respecting others songs. They actually ask the person if they mind if they try the song they normally do. If I have a person that only sings maybe 5 songs because they can't do others ( singing challenged). I would steer a more versatile singer to do something else, if they don't mind. I would never have a great singer sing the same song a person just sang that sings poorly - unless hours have passed by. I have 20,000 songs on my system. There is no reason why we can't work around the problem.

It is funny how a person will actually claim a song as being theres and gets mad when someone sings it first. I just tell them they must of done a wonderful job singing it that other people would want to try it too. and when it happens to me and someone says they sang your song. I tell them that no song is mine. I'm glad they are doing that song it means they must have liked it when I sang it. I'm sure I'll get to sing it another night.

Bah humbug...i don't play that game.
:drunk:
If someone wants to sing a song someones already done...i tell them...someone's done it already..do you still want to do it?
9 times out of 10 they say no.

But i have no problem hearing the same songs over...and over. I get paid really good to do so. And since i've been at the same place for eight years...and know most everyone...they don't care either. We're all there to have a good time.

In bars I've gone to, the bad singers sometimes get more applause than the great singers, I mean really... does it take more to get up there knowing you are gonna do great or knowing you are that good at all???  I think it's the whole William Hung phenomenon...

I think it's cuz people admire a person who knows they can't sing like others..and is going up to have a dang good time. I've seen it happen at our bar. I love that everyone gives applause to everyone for just having a good time.

I wouldn't sing a song that someone has already done that night but I have no problem if someone wants to sing what I've done.  And I don't mind listening to a song twice.  When I'm out like that it's all for fun anyway.  The most fun I have is when we have a lot of guys getting up to do Elvis songs and I decide to do my female Elvis.....Sometimes those guys would like to kill me....LOL....

I agree you don't have to be a great singer for people to enjoy your song.

I have a few regular singers that are so entertaining they could sing with duct tape over their mouths and people would still get a kick out of them. There fun to watch and don't take it so seriously. I find people are actually turned off by the egomaniac singers. The ones that think they are better then everyone else. I've actually been told by 2 different singers the owner should pay them to sing karaoke.

Here's a question for you Melly. I have heard of something like a Karaoke DJ hit list. That is songs they really dislike because they are done so much. It is cool you have I guess personal survival skills, (I used to play songs 19 times at weddings.. the same song over at the bride and grooms request).

So just a little of, what are the really hit hard tunes or genre?

this is a great topic.  i like to see what others so at thier shows so i can "steal" ideas!

the rule at my shows is no repeat songs while the person who sang it first is still there.  on occasion i have gone to the first singer, if i know them well, and asked if it would be okay for someone to sing a song they did earlier.  i really don't have too much of a problem with it since my singers sing everything from rap to sinatra to garth to elton john.  i have even, on occasion, asked one of my regulars if it's okay that i sing one of the songs they normally sing because it has been requested or something.

Genres for the bar i work...Country...and anything from oldies to 80's...not much rap..unless my daughter and i do it...LOL...

I one night heard family tradition...and turn the page...like 7 times a piece. THIS could be why i like tequila...ALOT! :drunk:  :yum:

But...every once in awhile..i'll get some heavy metal..and show tunes...
and as long as they can dance to it...i rarely have any problems. I love where i work.

Crank - I handle it very similiar to you. You get to know your people and you have a good idea who will get upset and who won't if someone sings "there" regular song.

Just like some people get very angry if anyone jumps on stage with them. Others don't mind.

I had to listen to Grandma got run over by a reindeer 3 times last night. I love christmas songs, but that one makes me yawn.

I discourage people from singing American Pie. I'm sorry, but a 10 min song? yuch.
I just nicely tell them how long the song is and if they'd really like to do it they can, but I'll have to cut it short. No one notices I just fade it out after one of the choruses. On a slow night they can sing the whole thing - but I'm going home to eat dinner and then I'll be back in plenty of time for the end of the song.

i do the same thing with Hotel California and there's an arrangement of a few songs that have an "outro" of like 5 minutes.  i just let the person know ahead of time, that i'm going to fade out the song once the lyrics are finished.  only had one person get upset with me for it.

Coming from a singers view, I don't like hearing the same song over and over again.  I also don't like the songs from the same band (Dixie Chicks marathon = Ugh) And I'm not much for regulars doing their regular songs, but I just go to another venue (Gay bar karaoke always succeeds in variety, and plus heterosexual me doesn't get hit on, which is a good thing but still it is a self esteem dampener)  And sometimes just to try if I can get a regular to vary themselves, I put in one of their songs, few complain but others do another song and get good response (hint hint try other songs it will be appreciated)

Once I heard someone else sing a song I had just handed in.  No biggie, though--I just took my slip back and changed it and picked out a different song!  The funny thing is that it was a song you don't hear very often ("Piano in the Dark")!  It was such a coincidence that we both picked that one!

At the place where I usually go, there's one guy that ALWAYS sings "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" (sp?) and there's one girl that ALWAYS sings "All Jacked Up".  They do a good job on those songs, but it's gotten VERY predictable.  (There was another guy there that ALWAYS sang "Love Machine", but he moved.)

I haven't heard a lot of talk about "signature songs" in the places where I've been going, but I've "heard" some talk about it on other websites.  Apparently people can be quite protective of their "signature" songs.  That's why I like to go to several venues, not just one.  There was a lady at the place I usually go that always did Patsy Cline stuff, so I waited till I was at another club to do "Walkin' After Midnight".  Last night I was one of the first people to sing and I started out with "Son of a Preacher Man", because a lot of people sing that and I wanted to make sure I got to it first.  I asked the KJ if anyone else was planning to sing that and he said no, I was the first one.  Whew!  Usually, though, I pick songs that aren't very common, so I don't worry about it.

The place I went to last night isn't the one where I go the most often, but it's near my house, and the KJ has seen me there and at another club.  Last night he specifically asked me to do "Tenth Avenue Freezeout" because he's heard me sing it before and wanted to hear me sing it again.  So I did, and it went over really well.  Guess that means it's my signature song now, huh?  But I don't want to sing it EVERY time I'm there!  That would be too predictable!  And if someone else wants to sing it--hey.  Go ahead.  I'd love to hear someone else's version.

One night a drunk sang Wild Irish Rose...He slaughtered it made fun of it like it was a childrens song....It just so happened I was after him...I told lanny to leave the cd in and play it again... I said son if you are going to sing this song then sing it right..With my best irish tenor and brogue I belted it out Really didnt need a mic....
 Sometimes it is necessary :D

Laura - I love your additude. You would make any KJ happy. I get very tired of hearing the same songs over and over.

Karyoker - LMAO That takes balls - But you are so right sometimes people need a good lesson. I hope the crowd backed you up with a huge applause!

I had a self admitted card toting professional singer come in last night. An Elvis impersonator. He walked around with this huge ego passing out his silly business card with a picture of himself on the back that looked like Leisure Suit Larry. He gets up to sing and makes me stop it because it wasn't in his key. I told him I could change the key, but that wasn't good enough. Then he bashes me over the mic for not having what he wants. So now he picks out another Elvis tune. Picture side burns and dressed in all black leather. Okay he starts singing doesn't sound like Elvis at all, but seems to be able to carry a tune. I'm thinking maybe this will be nice. Then the chorus kicks in he is screaming in the mic. A KJs nightmare. If he is a professional singer why does he not know to back off the mic if he going to do this? Oh his name "Jack Flash" - hee hee

Well long story short the crowd really didn't like him, not much applause.
The next singer comes up sings the orininal  Elvis tune this guy was going to do, but wasn't in his key and rocked the house - It was sweet!

The worse part of it all is the bar owner told me later he was going to book him at the bar he thought he was great. I just smiled - (idiot)

This guy isn't stepping on my turf or anything. We do have bands that play at the bar that are decent.

I have only been to karaoke a couple times in my life...Im not a big fan of bars or being around people when they are drinking..for personal reasons...Do people really get this way about the songs? If so...I think I really don't want to go lol...Now..if its a competition for a prize...hum....that would be different..

First..I would never sing a song someone did to try to "show them up"....
Second..I wouldn't care if someone sang the same one I did and "showed me up"...
Third...I have yet to solve world hunger so this issue will have to wait...

:)

anyhowsoever..thats my 2 cents worth..or rather 1/2 cents since I really have no clue what im talkin bout!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
