I have just bought a karaoke player and amplifier. Using the amp only with a cable mic Iam getting intermittant radio signals over the speakers. Why is this and how do I avoid.

this is a new one on me.  the mic is cabled?  that is very odd.  what type of radio signals are you getting?  radio stations, CBs, airline chatter?

Yea its like picking rf interference on guitar amps.  Yuo probably have a radio transmitter tower nearby..If the power cord is the same configuration as a computer you can get one that has the (donut)  around the cord which is a ferrite rf filter..

Sometimes just rotating the amp  or moving it to different areas of the house helps.. Are the speakers inside the amp or do they have a speaker cord running to each one..
Does the volume contol on the amp vary the interference? Sometimes the engineer of the interfering station will give suggestions on reducing it..

Let me know what goes down I have been on both ends of this scenario many times..

Karyoker,  This is an ongoing problem I too often have as well.  Is there a solution for those of us that DO live close to tranmission equipment, and have power cords that are hardwired to the amps ?  (Besides moving that is).  The humming, and
"easy listening crap" at times get's really annoyingly loud.. I don't like turning on my amps and having to experience "The beautiful music of Kenny G, Manilow, etc"

Years ago I was CE of a small tv station in ne colorado.. The studio and news set was on one end than at a higher level was the contol room then the transmitter room...  They put 300kw fm atenna below ours on the tower and their transmitter next to ours.. The mic runs from the news set to the control room was 150-200 feet.. I started getting bleed during our local news run from the fm in the mic cables.. It wasnt to cool when Byers was doin sports he had fm music in the background..I spent 6 months trying to get rid of it.. You can put the little ferrite beads on all the inputs of the audio amps put small caps from the power inputs to ground both sides...You can lift grounds trying to find a floater or ground loop. Whats frustrating is at that proximity to the antenna you are dealing with second and even more harmonics... If in your case if your amp has a grounded plug on try lifting that ground see if it makes any difference... Sometimes it isnt easy even though radio stations are broadcasting on a certain freq and should be able to filter at least attenuate to a tolerable level.. Neon sign transformers forget about it..

Finally one day I went down to the library to get  a wiring diagram for my old Dodge pickup.. There was an ARRL handbook sitting there on the table. A light went off in my head.  I went immediately to the filter sect.  got some ideas and went back to the station... I measured the mic cables cut them at odd multiple wavelengths.. And patiently waited till thenews run... Bingo  no more fm music.....

Anyway sometimes it is hard It can vary with temperature humidity time of the year etc.... And in the summer you are sometimes too busy cuz you are killing rattlers outside...

What's Ironic about this, is the mountain across from where I live, that the 1300, and 1100 ft TV towers stand on is "Rattlesnake mountain". The Transmitting towers (well within 1 mile radius) have numerous communications antennae. That does make sense however.  If I were to cut the cables to a different wave config, that might help.. Is it the guitar pickups that receive the stations ? the guitar, or mike cable that act as a receiving source ?  or the power cable of the amp ?    You see, this is where I pride myself in being a "technical moron"..  This type thing is WAY over my head.. :(

My hopeful quick fix solution never seemed to work  (looking  at the amp and yelling, "Shut the F up")

guitar pickups  nope
the guitar        nope
mic cable        maybe unplug it see if it goes away
maybe            this or any cable should not be coiled  move it around see if it varies

If the volume control varies the level of the interference then it is bleeding in prior to it very possibly inputs on the amp or the power cord...In which cas e your are amping it along with everybody else.

If it doesnt then check the speaker cables.....

God I'm so bored if I had a 11 meter trasceiver here id hook it up to the bedsprings or something and try to get some dx out of Tasmania or somewhere....

Th ex had a little mare and a metal trash can for water by a barb wire fence by the building.  She started hollering come quick grab a hoe... As I rounded the corner there was little rattler on our side of the fence only 2 or 3 feet trying to get away I naild him with a shovel but peeking around the tras can was the head of a bigger one.. I poked him and he atarted striking and finnally enough of him thrugh the fence to kill him...Whew that was over I started to reach down and pull him thru the fence.. Something told me no no... I pulled him out with a hoe and he was mated with another one just as big and was real pissed off.I finally got him and sat down for a minute... When I killed rattle  snakes I would take them out in the soft wheat field and bury them..  This time I had a 5 gallon bucket full of snake....

Karyoker,

Once you eat your first skillet fried Rattlesnake, you will be a devoted Rattlesnake hunter. Just toss some leftover bacon grease in a cast iron skillet and get it good and hot, but not smoking.

There is no excuse for you not to try it as they are easy to clean and prepare. Just make sure to skin and clean as soon as you kill them. For best flavor, don't wait even an hour  to clean them. Experienced snake eaters often keep their captives alive and intact until the grease is hot, then they skin them live and then chop off their heads for that reason.

...And no, they don't taste "just like chicken". They is mo-better.

If the gereral population ever discovers how good they taste, Rattlesnakes will end up on the Endangered Species List overnight.

If you decide not to cook the next one, toss him up in a tree away from your house...The Hawks will love you for it.

my preferred method of rattler execution is the 20 gauge, but i have used a golf club in a pinch!  the thing to remember is that they can only strike 1/2 of their body length.  as long as you stay outside that range, you're safe!

I've only seen one this big but in the organ mountians in southern new mexico I run into a dessert rattler He must have been 7 feet long.. He had a cotton tail in his mouth and was coming down a ravine.. He looked at me and I looked at him and we both mosied on our way...I didnt want no part of him....

Yea a 20 guage works you got to hitem right in the center of their head at close range.  A single bullet is useless...It just puts a hole in them then they do get mad....

I  had a 8 foot bull snake that hung around one summer He was sort indepent to

We see few venomous snakes here in CT.  Copperheads on occassion, Timber rattler's on occassion (also small snakes) and although I live in an area where they once were plentiful, in 25+ years I've yet to see one (thank God). The black rat snakes get quite large (almost tripped over a few ringneck rat's a few times about 9 feet, since I'm petrified of snakes naturally I did what any self respecting man would do, wet myself and ran home shaking). Rat snakes can also be extremely nasty and aggressive critters, one of the few species that will chase a person assuming the person inadvertently comes anyplace somewhat close to mom's nest. Ages ago, and a few states south, the Eastern DB rattler's got huge ! Probably 8-9 feet. Not sure what the status is on the Western DB rattler, yet that snake has a gorgeous skin. Nice comfortable boots too.. Probably endangered now, I haven't a clue. Time to google and see if a person can still purchase DB garments. Probably costs a fortune.

I've never tried rattler.  Assuming in a restaurant when the waiter or waitress take the top off the dish, it's not curled up with eye's and a tongue staring at you, (Like seguan bass at the local chinese place), I'd like to try eating rattler at some point. Supposed to be delicious when prepared well..

My list is Milk, Liver, and coffee with hazelnut flavoring or grogg

Regarding radio station's on the amps, in my particular case the level of interference ALWAYS is contingent on volume level of amp, the humming, and radio station gets louder as I turn up either the volume on the amp, or guitar, etc. I had to get a device for my telephone too.. In the winter especially when it was cold and dry...I had permanent MUZAK bleeding into my phone line. Sort've like a spurious sounding interference that'd change level but get quite loud at times, and fade
