I have started playing a few Reggaeton songs over the course of the evening as part of the dance music mix. Has anyone else discovered REGGAETON or started incorporating it into thier show at all? Maybe someone in the L.A. area?
Reggaeton is basically Latin Hip-hop with traditional hip-hop infused with a Salsa
beat. There area a good many mainline hip-hop artists that have made recordings with Reggaeton artists such as Don Omar, Pitbull or Daddy Yankee. The main one that comes to mind is the Regaeton version of Usher's "YEAH".
The non latin kids really take to it and it has an undeniable dance groove to it. Not a night goes by that I dont get asked for Daddy Yankee "GASOLINA".
I've even found a couple of Reggaeton Karaoke discs with Gasolina and Pitbull's KULO. Ill be ordering those. Maybe Ill record one of them and send a reggaeton song to singers showcase complete with me in ESPANOL!
Anyway anybody else out there have any experience or knowledge of Reggaeton?

Yup im in a town where in the summer the cars go by with radio blaring with gasolina or something... Im at the age where im not familar with the new stuff.. But I do private parties and I'll grab some kid thats interested in the computer and I'll show them how to search and put it in the playlist.. When they have a good list I'll save it with a unique name and use it for fill during karaoke... Then if I do another party with young kids I'll just call up one of the playlists.... They are impressed

Shocked is better word to describe their reactions when you bust out really modern stuff.

I personally love the beat. I don't use it for fillers, but that is a great idea.
I rarely have people try to sing it -
I try to stay hip on whats new - I have 2 teenage girls- that helps
I struggle more with country - I have to depend on my crowd to know what's popular there

I am a firm beliver that mixing the newest hot dance in with karaoke is a real crowd pleaser. A good KJ will watch the crowd to see what fills the dance floor and sells the most drinks and adjust his show thusly....you can believe the bar owner is watching too.
I've seen a few karoke only singers get miffed if too much dance is played between their chances to sing, but in the end the majority has to rule....and the majority is determined at the cash register.

agree with keith 1000% i personally don't listen to much music radio (i'm a sports talk kinida guy), but i do put on XM satellite when i get home sometimes, just so i can get the names of the new music that's being played. my patrons usually range from 18-60 although i have a lady and her son who come in every night. she's 94 i think and she LOVES to sing sweet caroline. bless her heart, she can't see the words, so we printed them out in GREAT BIG PRINT for her. she's so cute!

The type or genre of the fill is determined by the crowd both singers and audience... Older crowds I'll have mixture of old stuff at a lower volume Then of course to the other extreme or opposite at a teen party... As a singer I have learned to give energy to the audience and read them and get energy back...From that as a dj or kj I can read the crowd and see what is energizing them... The amount of singers that dont like dance sets is decreasing all the time... Also a varity is needed A show with singers singing the same songs over and over and the kj saying the same thing over and over gets old quick...Learn how to giggle on the mic....And go with the flow....

I work in a bar with a very young clientale that expects the newest R&B and Hip Hop. I personally am not a big fan of that stuff and don't really listen to the radio to keep up with it but have foudn a full-proof way to keep them hoppin year after year:
All I do is go to billboard.com and mtv.com and check out the charts. Radio stations all make their rotation playlists based on the billboard.com hot100 list, which is a listing of singles sales based on albums, downloads, etc. and is maintained by Nielson. The kids are directly voting for the songs that appear on the MTV.com charts (which is usually just a week or two BEHIND the billboard chart, but because of this shows more mainstread trends).
Between these two charts (the billboard chart depicts all genres, the MTV seems to be mostly hip hop and modern rock), I know that these are the songs that everyone is being bombarded with day in and day out, so they are going to be popular as intro/dance/filler music for karoake.
As far as finding the best dance music, I just download everything on the charts that I don't yet have then listen to it. The rule of thumb for me is if it is one the charts and has a BIG beat that hits less than 10-15 seconds into the song, THEY WILL DANCE!!!
I thought this method might help someone out there!!

Another method that has helped me is to pick a local radio station, find their website, and look at their playlist and/or top songs list. If not familiar, you can ask folks what radio station they listen to for ideas. This works for any genre you are not familiar with, and shows what is popular and being requested in that specific area.
I have also searched for radio stations in other parts of the country to compare, sometimes they are similar, sometimes they are not.

Just some words of warning about Reggaeton... I know that most of you perform in bars, so the language or the content is not as critical... but if you think that at some point it may be critical, you may want to take a look at the lyrics in Reggaeton, which tend to be dirty and/or suggestive...

Good suggestion pelicaninflight. I have run into the same thing with a lot of current Hip Hop songs. The version that many people get used to hearing on the radio can definately be different from the original. I try to be careful with which versions are played, depending on where we are and the mix of people.
