It just dawned on me when I was posting in the tipping poll topic.
How many KJs out there don't take breaks where they work? and don't have any down time because they go directly from singer to singer?
This is my situation. I do it because I have so many singers and the more people that get to sing the less complaining about wait time.
If I have to go to the bathroom I have to have a patron I know well sing a long song, so I can get back in time for the next singer.
If I need something like a refill on coffee or water one of the patrons help me out.
I'm not complaining just curious to see if others know KJs that do this or they do it themselves.

No breaks here, I learned to be able to get any personal business taken care of within 3 minutes

I try to take care of personal business before the show, but as I'm diabetic, I drink a ton of water... and as such, a baffroom break is often necessary.
BUT I can do that during a singer's 3 1/2 minute song. The song is queued up ahead of time, I announce the singer, they start, I spend about twenty seconds making certain the sound is right, and then I can casually stroll to the baffroom!
Not a problem... anything that requires a "number two"... I'll wait for home unless I've got the flu or something. And if I'm that sick I try to find someone to do the shift for me...

Auto cue with hot dance in the tray usually works.
That allows extra time for more than washing yer hands.
The KJ can tote his wireless mic while away from the stack as long as he makes sure to mute it while flushing and flirting.

Oh my I just got my first wireless mic. I don't know if I am brave enough to bring it with me to the bathroom.
I have to say this topic is cracking me up. i'm laughing so hard my daughter asked me what was so funny. Patrons have no idea the length we go to for them.

No break here also. Like most others I am able to take care of business while the singer is singing. I also cary a wireless mic so that I can keep the flow of the show while making my way back to the stage. As for drinks the bartenders keep an eye on my glass and even when extremly busy they seem to keep me topped off.

Not too long ago, I noticed a KJ standing in line for the bathroom while the guy on stage was doing "Cocaine". The song, that is.

I have always been able to time it in between songs. I usually pick one at least 3min long.
However If I need to be away longer, I just put MTU Hoster on Auto mode and give my extra wireless to the next singer in line and tell them that they have 15 seconds after the last song ends to walk up and turn the mic on before their song will
automatically cue up and they start singing. This works really well.
I don't use it that often but when I need to buy a few extra minutes to take care of business it comes in handy.

We do the same as Melly, we take turns. Only thing I haven't figured out yet is why my wife gets 3-4 breaks for every one of mine???
I like the idea of taking the wireless mic with ya. We take it around sometimes during a 'group' type song and try to get more people involved. Taking it into the bathroom could be interesting in the right place, with the right crowd...... gonna have to try it.......

It also depends on the venue, a bar I know tells a KJ to play some music between a cluster of singers. Others have a team, so one can be the host and the other KJs. And usually someone sings "Me and Bobby McGee" "Aenima" "Stairway to Heaven" or other 5 min+ songs, so I usually see the KJ take their break then.

Az for Breaks .....I just Wear Depend's...It's great I just stand there and smile while someone is complaining about the rotation. I can Usually get about three or four Break times per Depend's It just "Depends" On How Many Beers I consume.
It's alot easier than the old trick of filling up a 12 oz Bud Light Bottle behind the Console while someone is singing.
Kinda Gives you a warm feeling and no one knows why your smiling.
P.S. this was just a joke

i don't break the karaoke and i can usually handle business in between songs. as for getting refills, we have a unique system. actually two systems for getting refills. someone started the trend of putting your beer koozie on your head when you're empty. that way the bartender knows....as well as you looking goofy! the other is that if the bartender doesn't notice your koozie, i get on the mic and say "Bueller, Bueller, Bueller" until she aknowledges. it's a line out of Ferris Bueller's Day off where Ben Stein's character is calling roll. he get's to Ferris and keeps calling his name (because he's not in the class) until someone aknowledges that he's not there. i have an added advantage that the guy who covers for me when i'm out of town is usually in attendance at the show so i have a runner if i need something special or if a patron decides to talk my ear off while someone is singing.
