The subcode is an underlying code of the actual audio track that can only be read by players with the capability. Any cd player will play the audio, but only special players (cdg capable) will play the graphics.

Only other formats when cdg (approx '91-'92) came out was basically cassette (some were actually still using 8 tracks) & laser discs which is when karaoke started mainstreaming with the advent of the Pioneer videos in the states. Tapes pretty much sucked because the words were on printed sheets & there was no guide to show where & when to sing. The laserkaraoke was a breakthrough (well sort of) since everyone could see the words & "follow the bouncing ball" - if you will. Problem was cost. Laserdiscs at the time were running upwards to $160 PER disc. 28 songs on 1 disc, 14 per side. That averaged out to $5+ per song. When cdg's came out, it did 2 things, compacted the size of the media & dropped the price considerable. 1 15 song cdg would run upwards to $30 per disc. Average $2 per song. It also dropped the video portion that some people found annoying.
Other formats such as DVD, mp3G, kma, etc formats are relatively new within a few years.
