was always singing, at home, school, church.  can't remember when i didn't sing. the first time i thought, yeah, maybe i can sing, i had climbed a tree in my front yard, and was singing my heart out, probably something from the Sound of Music, and when i finished, a big group of people started clapping and cheering, i was so embarassed, i didn't know it,  couldn't see them through the trees, but my neighbors were having a barbecue!

First time i knew i was a singer, was when i bought my very own microphone!

I'm also one of those who found karaoke after singing had already been such a big part of my life.  I've always been musically inclined, but never really considered myself a singer until high school.  I had sung in choir and been in bands before then, but hadn't thought of it anything more than just something I love to do.  In high school it became more apparent to me, that singing meant more than I had imagined, and I felt the urge to persue it in college.  From that moment on, I knew I was a musician and that is where my heart lies.. :) Karaoke is just another outlet for my passion! (and a fun one at that)

I think for me it was when I realised that I was happy to be the first singer of the night, not having had much to drink yet.

When you started singing karaoke, how did you know that you had become singer, rather than just someone that gets up and sings?" There is a difference.

When I couldn't go sing, and I missed it.

I think though, it's the slow nights...some just the KJ & me singing...that have shown me more than anything.  It's those nights when you feel like you can stretch out a little more and try something "off your beaten path".  I know I've found more songs those nights than just by random searching.

I'm not sure if I can categorize myself as a singer or not? :headscratch:

I know one time before I started singing rock and alternative tunes I was singing a George Strait song...."Write This Down" at karaoke one night. When I finished, there was an enormous applause and hootin'/hollerin'. I think that was when I knew I didn't want to carry the country thing too far, and was probably the turning point where I moved on. I'm not country, although you wouldn't know the difference hearing my voice accent. :ggof:
Not that there's anything wrong with country tunes.....I still occasionally listen to country. I think my choice of music is an extention of who I really am, or who I'd like to be. Although, I wish I could sing an occasional soft, love type song effectively. My voice doesn't work very well if it's not crankin' out the volume levels, so I'm not really that versatile.
But, I can say that what I do sing or mimic currently, I am comfortable with it. Some call it singing, some call it noise. I call it my lifeline to happiness. :biggrinthumb:

I don't consider myself to be a "singer"..... to me..... a SINGER is someone who sings for a living...

If I tell people my hobby... I usually just say "I sing" rather than "I'm a singer"

I dunno why..... wierd....

Crystal,
What I'm asking is when was the first time it came to you that you're not only able to sing but that you actually have a voice that people appreciate.  I listened to you; trust me, you really sound fantastic.

My friends and family all say I sound great- but heck mom will always tell you that.  My daughter's husband has an uncle that seldom talks to anyone and usually sits by himself in a corner at just about every family get together.  This man probably hasn't said more that fifty words to me since I've known him.

One night the entire family went out to eat where they have karaoke - I got up and sang a couple of song, and when I finished he came over to my table and said, "don't ever ever let anyone tell you the you can't sing."  That moment meant more to me than all the applause in the world. I thought to myself, if he like my singing, then I gotta be good.

                                   Jackson
