When you started singing karaoke, how did you know that you had become singer, rather than just someone that gets up and sings?" There is a difference.

LOL sometimes when large groups of white people "dance" it is hard to tell... either way, just keep a finger on "911" just in case... ya know I wub ya foxywoxyroxy gurl... I have no idea what that means... I had never been a singer before I took over my first karaoke club back in 1990 but didn't take me long to become a karaoke whore and I knew I was a "singer" because I was paid alot of money to do what I did... I knew I had made it when I was being paid to sing, flirt, drink and dance LOL might explain why I worked 6-7 nights a week the first 10 years I was in the biz LOL health insurance??? who cares... this job had BENEFITS!!! wait... what was the question... hey roxy, I'll take another lap dance while we figure it out...- Tig

Tigr - wow - takes pulse. Be sure to say hello to Seby. We recently "returned" and a buncha SS from before have come back and are posting.

My answer to this is pretty simple. When I played a Portuguese wedding and they paid me and I sang as well as played in the band. I was 15. And people didn't run away. Of course I did not realize that most of the guests were leaning on each other dancing so they wouldn't fall over and their level of musical acuity was about equal to my lead playing at 15.

Another answer would be - when somebody asks you to sing twice.

Well Karaoke wasn't what told me that I was a singer.  I tried out for the Georgia Children's Choir when I was 11 and I made it through 50 cuts.  Then when the whole choir went to NYC to perform at Carnegie Hall, I tried out for a solo in "My Heart Soars" and I got it.... I was more shocked than anyone really.... and I guess that's how I knew I must be half way decent.

I always sang at the top of my lungs when I was living at home. I used to drive my parents and my brothers freakin NUTS! But I was never singing seriously.... I was usually just being the hyper-loud-nutcase that I was.... OVER-exaggerating my impersonations of different artists....

then one day me and a couple friends were walking through a park and started doing really whiney nasally LeAnn Rimes impressions and I figured out that I could do the wierd yodelly thing in "Blue" and the other two girls couldn't do it for the life of them..... then I started to figure out a lot of stuff that I could do with my voice that they couldn't..... it got me pretty excited...

First time I sang "Blue" seriously was at a karaoke bar and I had a few strangers tell me that it was good, and the KJ gave me a phone number of a friend who owned a recording studio and he told me to "give it a shot".... I never did, but the compliment was enough to send me over the moon. I've been hooked ever since :D

.... sheesh.... I'm really babbly today. I must be bored!

There are 4 stages
  Maybe I can sing
  I can sing
  I can sing good
Then for some the next stage is relaxing not caring about being a star all the time singing all genres and actually becoming a singer and entertainer.....

You gotta watch it on the drinks. Was in a bar at a table with 4 cuties, after (in my 20s) hitting at least 3 other clubs, and things were getting real fuzzy. Some guy was on stage singing. Some guy was serving the drinks. In fact, some guys were everywhere, including the 4 at my table and one trying to pinch my tush.

I tried karaoke for the first time (a few years back) hoping it could aid as a possible training tool. I won't "get up and sing" because I know I'm not a singer. I just use backing vocal's (and tracks to songs I personally like) as a somewhat enjoyable means of hopefully developing something somewhere down the line (besides breach of peace summons). ALL my attempts to sing take place behind closed doors and in private. Some things aren't meant to be shared IMHO,  topping this list might be bad breath, dirty socks, and my vocal skills.

I'm somewhere around the "maybe I can sing" stage.   Yet I know I currently can't sing.  Not all things come easily to all individuals.  I wasn't blessed with a voice conducive to singing any genre of music I enjoy.
