That rarely happens in this area anymore, the mgrs and singers are more sophisticated and savvy than that. Whether I am using my gear or even if I was filling in for someone and the bar owned the system.. At this point here is what would be happening... Nobody would be singing there would be no fill music and everybody in the bar would be aware what was going on... I do not argue with drunks mgrs or anybody. It rarely happens anymore but I'll shut down the current singer in mid song. if I am having problems with a drunk I announce over the pa could I have management over here please.. If I am having problems with management it will be solved before the show starts again...If there is anything a singer hates more than being bumped it is sitting there waiting in silence while somebody is causing trouble...
In your senario after the mgr insisted there would be dead silence and I would be up at the bar telling him or her.. Ok if you insist you have another choice to make.. I announce karaoke is over in which case the singers will go somewhere else and wont be here next week.. The other option is I let Sue sing now and you will announce on the mic why she should sing next. Alot of singers will leave now and I and all the singers that you are bumping wont be here next week... And if the bar owned the gear I would be happy that I wouldnt have to tear down.
As a singer if I am in a strange place I would be aware wats going on and I have done it many times I'll tell the mgr or bartender I'm gone and you do realize that the majority of the singers that you are snubbing by bumping them probably wont be back either...

Should've woke up earlier so I'd have more time to post!
Going back to your question Allstar, I do need this gig, cause I'm full time and it's the only job I have or love, but I WOULD NOT be afraid leave, or be fired, over something like this. Still do an occasional side gig on my own, but this pretty much pays the bills.
It was actually the G.M., not the owner(s), Flashbaxstudios, however, there might be just as much apathy from their side, from what I've seen in the past.
Great story Matt. I wish I could win their hearts and minds like you did! Still possible (fingers crossed).
Well, off to work. I hope the God's are smiling!

Just refer them to this website and have them read it themselves

I really like they way they run rotation at Cat's Meow on Burbon street in New Orleans.
They have a large chalk board up on stage.....The singer walks up and writes his name and song # at the bottom of the list then waits to be called....The KJ, who sits in a booth up high and behind the audience, simply calls the top-most singer/song on the chalk board...Everyone can see where they are on the list.
They (stage hands)erase the top selection as it is being performed.
You can walk off stage from singing and write another at the bottom of the list or you can sit it out for awhile or walk out.
No singer ever talks to the KJ. He is isolated from the crowd and only deals with sound....The stage hands ham it up with the crowd and direct singers to write their selection on the board......It is so simple and no one gets put on the spot and no customer can argue about who should be next to sing.

i always use a clipboard--much neater and tidier and I can quickly point out how many people there are and where everyone is in the roatation at a glance. Cuts WAY down on the whining and moaning when they can see for themselves just how many there are.

Clipboard if you prefer, but the chalk board lets all see who is next even BEFORE they approach you.....No explaining, no whining(at least to you) and no doubt to anyone about fair rotation....And the neat thang is THEY place their name there, not you or anyone else....No one to blame and no one to accuse of playing favorites.
If it's a busy night and they can't sing often enuff, then they can blame only the fact that it's a busy night.....From there they can decide that if they want to sing more often, then they need to visit on one of your slower nights.

Okay, back from the show, and I still have a job...so far. Had the big talk after work stood my ground....again. She didn't elaborate too much about any opinions from the higher powers, which I guess is understandable in her position, whether anything was said about it by them or not.
My Guess: I'm on limited time till they can find a K.J. replacement who will conform to company policy of making the self-serving "gripers" happy! Kind of under the impression that they think I take the job too seriously when it comes to fairness. Keep in mind, I've always been a fun-loving guy on the mic, B.S.-ing with the customers because I genuinely like and give a darn about them, so I don't think it's about the hosting part. It's just kinda'....baffling.
Keith, funny you should bring up the Cat's Meow, because when I was on the company's karaoke tour last year, we had a chance to go there when we were in the Big Easy. It was a BLAST!!! Cool part is, we there during Halloween. Kinda like the way the Meow did their karaoke show...Bourben St. party style! Not exactly pure karaoke (singer sings one, host sings one), but they were fun & had their act together, for the kind of show they did. Me and my girl still went to their web-cam and had reservations to go back to N.O. this Halloween, till you-know-what happened. Used to run a sign-up list myself, at the other place I worked, so it was a pleasant surprise to see their use of that chalkboard.
Oh, by the way everybody, thank you SOOOO MUCH for the support and views on this thread! Once again, I know y'all have gone over this stuff a few times in the past, but it really does mean a lot to hear from outside people with similar opinions like yours ! Also this thread WILL be shown to them, so thank you again! Fight the Power!!

well, best of luck... to be honest, I was never happy working for a "house" system... go your own way (thank you Fleetwood Mac), and be happier in the long run!

I'm glad it's working out for you so far... I understand the line you take on a fair rotation (it coincides with mine :hi5: ) and know how difficult it can be to stand your ground when there is a very real prospect of losing your job.
We have never run a "house system" but in the early part of our KJ career we did work for a guy. We ran everything as we saw fit though....
Here's to hoping it works out for the best! Susie
