I bought a nice Karaoke setup for home use and quite a few disks and now all of my friends want to have me KJ their parties, or at least borrow my stuff.  Well, I have a few scratched disks now, and I am considering making backup copies and using them when I loan them to my friends.  I know about the computer programs that do it, but my computer has problems of its own.  I was wondering if anybody tried any of the all in one duplicators.  I saw the MicroBoards QD-2, the Alesis CD Twin, and a few others. Has anybody tried these?  Any comments or recommendations on them would be appreciated.

I've tried them... they work, but I dunno if they work on the sc and cb and priddis discs with their extra track... a data track.

Powerkaraoke (www.powerkaraoke.com) seems to be able to work with almost ALL burners, not just those that are specific for karaoke subcode!

What kind of computer problems are you having where you wouldn't wznt to use your computer to do it?

I have tried the duplicators, and can tell you that you will have more coasters then good ones. As Matt was saying, the additional data track causes a problem. I would suggest that you get your PC going, and get a Plextor CD RW. It might take some more time, but you will have less coasters. Even better, get 2 Plextor CD RW's and you can duplicate that way.

Allstar:  Are you saying with two Plextors I can go from one to the other and dupilcate CD+G's?

going from burner to burner is DEFINATELY the way to go for creating backups. Otherwise there's the extra step... and maybe something could be lost in that process. I personally don't have the problem, but I can see where some folks might have issues... and as it has been hinted, if your pc is less than stellar, maybe there's resource issues that can crop up, and the error rate can go up as well...

With the price of computers these days, you can get yourself something dedicated to karaoke & get the 2 Plextor drives & the program needed & you'd be better off in the long run than the stand alone unit.
Get a good sized hard drive & good amount of memory you could also dump all your cdg's to hard drive via mp3g ( equivalent) & the Winamp program & run karaoke from that as well.

I am curious why you guys are advocating buying two burners. I have only one burner and use my all purpose read only drive to read the disc. Burner still cost 2x or 3x then just straight reader. As far as I know, any CD-ROM drives will read the CD+G format, at least using software from Powerkaraoke that I use. You can pick up a 56X read only drive for less than $20 now days. If you already have a drive in your computer, you can use that to read, I use my DVD player on my computer to read.

The burning side is where you need a special drive. I use Yamaha external burner for my use. I just put a source disc in my DVD player, blank disc in the Yamaha and just hit burn button and it's done.

Nope, not true at all. Only with special software.
I prefer 2 Plex's without any special software.

Plus you can be 99% assured that you won't be making coasters.

Thanks for all of the input.  Like I said, my computer sucks and should probably be replaced rather than upgraded, and to be honest, it still does what I need it to so I really don't want to go to the trouble of transferring everything from one computer to another.  I was looking for a stand alone type of thing that would be easy to just drop a disk in and press go.  It sounds like nobody likes the stand alone copiers so I will probably just stay away from it until I get a new computer.  On some other threads I kept hearing about MTU, which is a company that seems to specialize in Karaoke production, copying, etc.  They have their own stand alone unit.  Has anybody tried it?  I hear that MTU is a good company (from other strings).  Does their unit copy the extra tracks?  Thanks in advance.

Basically what I stated was maybe get a computer for your karaoke needs only, not necessarily a new computer for all your needs.  It would do better than a stand alone unit.
